Building an Atmospheric Forge & Heat Treat Oven
Building an Atmospheric Forge & Heat Treat Oven By William T. Goodman & Robert W. Holmes
2003 | 72 Pages | ISBN: 1878087282 | PDF | 41 MB
The forge/heat treat oven created by Bill Goodman and Bob Holmes and detailed in this manual stands a bit over 5'2" tall from floor to the top of the twin burners. This puts the access doors at a convenient height to view the work in progress. The access openings are 6" x 6" and the chamber is 22" from door to door. The furnace operates on propane and the flame is adjustable from 1-1/2 psi to 8 psi gas pressure. The unique burner design results in twin flames impinging on each other. The unit is very quiet and not intimidating to operate. The primary air volume increases as the pressure and volume of gas increases so there is no air shutter adjustment. The built in pyrometer gives instant, accurate temperature readings. No fan or blower needed and no electrical hook up required. You can take this forge anywhere in the world and it still works. The versatile design allows for many uses. The large openings at either end permit multiple jobs at the same time or a long piece can be worked. It can be used by one person or several at the same time. Schools, blacksmith meetings and manufacturing firms will find this feature useful. And the large opening allows for aluminum or other metals to be melted so fooundry work could also be done in this unit as well.

Britain 1940 The Decisive Year on the Home Front
Britain 1940: The Decisive Year on the Home Front by Anton Rippon
English | May 27, 2020 | ISBN: 1526767708 | 240 pages | EPUB | 8.59 Mb
On New Year's Day 1940, the people of Britain looked back on the first four months of the Second World War with a sort of puzzled unease. Wartime life was nothing like what they had imagined. Unlike the First World War there was no fighting on the Western Front. Indeed, there was no Western Front. There had been no major air attacks. Four days into the war German bombers had approached the East Coast but no bombs were dropped. Everyone carried their gasmask but there was no poison gas. Petrol was the only commodity rationed. There was no noticeable shortage of food, which was as available now as it had been before Hitler invaded Poland. Young men called up to join the forces were largely idle. They certainly were not fighting the Germans. In January 1940, life in wartime Britain was simply an inconvenient version of life in peacetime. Even the hitherto strictly enforced blackout regulations were relaxed when it became obvious that, because of them, people were being killed in road accidents.

Breaking Barriers Travel and the State in Early Modern Japan
Breaking Barriers: Travel and the State in Early Modern Japan By Constantine Nomikos Vaporis
1995 | 402 Pages | ISBN: 0674081072 | PDF | 111 MB
Travel in Tokugawa Japan was officially controlled by bakufu and domainal authorities via an elaborate system of barriers, or sekisho, and travel permits; commoners, however, found ways to circumvent these barriers, frequently ignoring the laws designed to control their mobility. In this study, Constantine Vaporis challenges the notion that this system of travel regulations prevented widespread travel, maintaining instead that a "culture of movement" in Japan developed in the Tokugawa era.Using a combination of governmental documentation and travel literature, diaries, and wood-block prints, Vaporis examines the development of travel as recreation; he discusses the impact of pilgrimage and the institutionalization of alms-giving on the freedom of movement commoners enjoyed. By the end of the Tokugawa era, the popular nature of travel and a sophisticated system of roads were well established. Vaporis explores the reluctance of the bakufu to enforce its travel laws, and in doing so, beautifully evokes the character of the journey through Tokugawa Japan.

Breaking Babe Ruth Baseball's Campaign Against Its Biggest Star
Edmund F. Wehrle, "Breaking Babe Ruth: Baseball's Campaign Against Its Biggest Star "
English | ISBN: 0826221602 | 2018 | 304 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Rather than as a Falstaffian figure of limited intellect, Edmund Wehrle reveals Babe Ruth as an ambitious, independent operator, one not afraid to challenge baseball's draconian labor system. To the baseball establishment, Ruth's immense popularity represented opportunity, but his rebelliousness and potential to overturn the status quo presented a threat. After a decades-long campaign waged by baseball to contain and discredit him, the Babe, frustrated and struggling with injuries and illness, grew more acquiescent, but the image of Ruth that baseball perpetuated still informs how many people remember Babe Ruth to this day. This new perspective, approaching Ruth more seriously and placing his life in fuller context, is long overdue.
