People's Science Bodies and Rights on the Stem Cell Frontier
Free Download Ruha Benjamin, "People's Science: Bodies and Rights on the Stem Cell Frontier"
English | ISBN: 0804782970 | 2013 | 272 pages | EPUB | 1443 KB
Stem cell research has sparked controversy and heated debate since the first human stem cell line was derived in 1998. Too frequently these debates devolve to simple judgments―good or bad, life-saving medicine or bioethical nightmare, symbol of human ingenuity or our fall from grace―ignoring the people affected. With this book, Ruha Benjamin moves the terms of debate to focus on the shifting relationship between science and society, on the people who benefit―or don't―from regenerative medicine and what this says about our democratic commitments to an equitable society.

People of the Mediterranean An Essay in Comparative Social Anthropology
Free Download J. Davis, "People of the Mediterranean: An Essay in Comparative Social Anthropology "
English | ISBN: 1138928585 | 2015 | 302 pages | EPUB | 1033 KB
The Mediterranean countries have long attracted the attention of social anthropologists, from Frazer and Durkheim to the present day. In this volume, first published in 1977, Dr Davis reviews the extensive anthropological material collected and published by people who have worked in the area and claims that social anthropologists have a distinctive opportunity to compare similar kinds of institution and process in a variety of contexts - political, economic, bureaucratic, religious. He examines countries, tribes and communities stretching from Spain all the way round the Mediterranean and back along the coast of North Africa. In chapters on economics, stratification, politics, family and kinship, he has found it possible and sensible to set Albanian and Berber tribesmen beside each other, and to discuss Italian and Lebanese peasants in the same paragraph. The result is both a survey of the anthropological material and an essay in comparison, founded on a critique of the work of his predecessors and colleagues. The last chapter is an account of the uses anthropologists have made of the historical sources available to them.

Peer Pressure, Peer Prevention The Role of Friends in Crime and Conformity
Free Download Barbara J. Costello, "Peer Pressure, Peer Prevention: The Role of Friends in Crime and Conformity"
English | ISBN: 1138951692 | 2016 | 132 pages | EPUB | 693 KB
Criminological research has largely neglected the possibility that positive peer influence is a potentially powerful source of social control. Quantitative methods tease out cause, effect, and spuriousness in the relationship between peer delinquency and personal delinquency, but these methods do little or nothing to reveal how and why peers might influence each other toward-or away from-deviance.

Peer Mentoring in Criminal Justice
Free Download Gillian Buck, "Peer Mentoring in Criminal Justice "
English | ISBN: 0367228742 | 2020 | 242 pages | EPUB | 432 KB
Peer mentoring is an increasingly popular criminal justice intervention in custodial and community settings. Peer mentors are community members, often with lived experiences of criminal justice, who work or volunteer to help people in rehabilitative settings. Despite the growth of peer mentoring internationally, remarkably little research has been done in this field. This book offers the first in-depth analysis of peer mentoring in criminal justice. Drawing upon a rigorous ethnographic study of multiple community organisations in England, it identifies key features of criminal justice peer mentoring. Findings result from interviews with people delivering and using services and observations of practice.

Peculiar Lessons How Nature and the Material World Shaped a Prairie Childhood
Free Download Lois Braun, "Peculiar Lessons: How Nature and the Material World Shaped a Prairie Childhood"
English | ISBN: 1773370375 | 2020 | 224 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Part memoir, part social history, this collection of ten essays explores the various physical and natural elements that form the backdrop to Braun's memories of growing up on a farm in southern Manitoba in the mid-20th century. From blackboard chalk to curling rocks in the chapter on stone, from mirages to straight-line winds in the essay on light and air, she reflects on her interactions with the elements as a child and how her responses influenced her evolution into adulthood. Braun includes intriguing tidbits about the science and history behind each element as it pertains to life in her unique location on our planet. The book highlights the value and beauty of the simple components of our surroundings that we take for granted growing up, exposes their true complexity, and reveals how the fascination with a "simple" thing can become a lifelong pursuit that sustains our artistic and spiritual needs.
