In-theater combat crew replacement centers (CCRC) represented a brief but important stop for aircrews training as replacements for personnel lost in the European theater during World War II. The Eighth Air Force's 496th Fighter Training Group operated a fighter CCRC at Goxhill, England, and illustrated the unique challenges and successes of the CCRC mission. The 496th Fighter Training Group overcame maintenance shortfalls, aircraft shortages, and persistent morale issues to train more than 2,400 fighter pilots for combat duty in the Lockheed P-38 Lightning and North American P-51 Mustang.

Theseus and the Minotaur The History of One of Greek Mythology's Most Famous Legends
Free Download Theseus and the Minotaur: The History of One of Greek Mythology's Most Famous Legends by Charles River Editors, Andrew Scott
English | January 24, 2017 | ISBN: 1542725828 | 52 pages | EPUB | 0.77 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes ancient accounts of the myth *Discusses historical theories behind the legend *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading "Theseus, the hero-slayer of the Minotaur, entered Crete from without, as the symbol and arm of the rising civilisation of the Greeks." - Joseph Campbell Countless civilizations have come and gone over the course of time, but interest in mythology is one of the great constants. People have approached myths from countless angles, some denigrating and self-righteous, others earnest and open-minded, but there is something mystical and universal in all myths that speaks to the reader across the years, regardless of what they know of historiography or "schools of thought." The truth is that all of these stories live in a murky, anachronistic history so entangled that trying to unravel it can mean everything or nothing at all. One of the reasons for this is the age of most myths, especially those from ancient times (the name Theseus can be traced back as far as 1450 BCE, for instance). Another is the sheer volume of possible versions there can be of a given myth. A lot of mythological stories span centuries, so it's likely that nothing like an "original version" of Theseus and the Minotaur will ever be known. In fact, even if the story could be traced all the way back, the "original" is likely to be so far removed from the beloved modern-day version that it would not be adopted as canon anyway. Nor, it has to be said, can a version of the story be isolated that would have been read at a specific point in time, such as the Classical Period, since a lot of the sources for stories like Theseus are either fragmentary or come even later. Moreover, an "original" is less important than the layers of meaning accumulated over the ages. To the modern reader, the sum of the parts can be more fruitful than the mode of conception. Regardless, as one of the most famous myths of all time, the story of Theseus has been at the heart of Greek mythology since he became Athens' "Culture Hero" at the beginning of the 5th century BCE, and variants on his story surface in countless ancient sources. The importance of the story to the Greeks themselves makes it worth looking at the story from a historical standpoint; many scholars believe the actions and events in myths have a basis in historical fact. On the other hand, Joseph Campbell's "monomyth" theory takes a different approach by suggesting all myths are part of a wider, mythological framework representing the psychological needs of the reader. Whether the approaches are "correct" has been and will continue to be debated in scholarly circles for the foreseeable future, but in many respects both sides of the debate can add value and understanding for modern readers. Even in the case of a story like Theseus that so many people are familiar with, studying the legend allows for different ways of interpreting it, and helps readers understand all the different variations of events within it. Theseus and the Minotaur: The History of One of Greek Mythology's Most Famous Legends looks at the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, based on both Greek and Roman sources, from which both fascinating and key elements of the story emerge. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about the story like never before.

Then and now: The juxtaposition on a host of major issues present in the 1980's and the first decade of the 21st century. Is America a religious nation? The abuse of power, the relation between church and state: These are but a few sample of the 31 commentaries addressing issues spanning the decades from the 1980's to the present. There are some which stand alone without any parallel expression in our day. There is one titled: ""Baseball Revisited."" ""The times they are a-changing. Yes and no!"" ""Is there anything new under the sun? Yes and no!"" ""Weaving in timeless themes from Ecclesiastes and the ancient Greeks, Leverenz astutely comments on cogent, insightful radio commentaries he wrote back in the Reagan years, capturing both progress and the absence of change-from the Reagan years to Obama."" -Craig R. Mosher, Associate Professor & Director of Social Work Program; Department Head - Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work (SASW) Department, Luther College ""Leverenz's book s an extremely readable and timely series of 'then' and 'now' vignettes that expose key issues presently facing us as actually being repetitions of those [from] the 1980's. Drawing from his experiences as a pastor and Public Radio commentator, he skillfully weaves his realistic thesis that while the players in history change, the Description remains recognizably the same. Blanketed with sadness over the human condition, a hint emerges that awareness might slow recurrence."" -W. Paul Jones, Emeritus Professor, writer Robert E. Leverenz is a United Methodist minister and social worker. He has advanced degrees from Duke Divinity School, St. Paul School of Theology, and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Iowa. He has served parishes in Iowa and Oregon. He is the author of Poetic Expressions: The extraordinary in the Ordinary, and That's What They Are in For! A Pastoral Memoir of a Privileged Profession. Theorist of Maritime Strategy Sir Julian Corbett and his Contribution to Military and Naval Thought
Free Download J.J. Widen, "Theorist of Maritime Strategy: Sir Julian Corbett and his Contribution to Military and Naval Thought "
English | ISBN: 1409433277 | 2012 | 190 pages | EPUB | 634 KB
Since its publication in 1911, Sir Julian's Corbett's Some Principles of Maritime Strategy has remained a key document within naval strategic thinking. Yet despite his undoubted influence, Corbett's theories have not been subjected to scientific review and systematic comparison with other naval thinkers. In this assessment, Dr Widen has provided a fresh interpretation of Corbett's legacy and his continued relevance as a classic theorist of naval war. Divided into three parts, the book begins with a brief biographical overview of Corbett's life, highlighting in particular his bibliographic history and the influences on his thinking. The latter two sections then describe and assess Corbett's views on military and naval theory, respectively. Together these two parts represent his overall theory of maritime strategy, including his conception of limited war, his intellectual debt to Clausewitz, command of the sea, his critic of decisive battle, as well as the different methods of naval operations. By means of a thorough assessment of Corbett's theory of maritime strategy, Dr Widén highlights the continued relevance of his theories. Both the strengths and shortcomings of Corbett's thinking are discussed and reflections offered on their intellectual, practical and doctrinal value. In so doing, Dr Widen has written a book that deserves to be read by anyone with an interest in the past, present or future of maritime strategy.
