To Raise and Discipline an Army Major General Enoch Crowder, the Judge Advocate General's Office, and the Realignment o
Free Download Joshua Kastenberg, "To Raise and Discipline an Army: Major General Enoch Crowder, the Judge Advocate General's Office, and the Realignment o"
English | ISBN: 0875807542 | 2017 | 494 pages | EPUB | 662 KB
Major General Enoch Crowder served as the Judge Advocate General of the United States Army from 1911 to 1923. In 1915, Crowder convinced Congress to increase the size of the Judge Advocate General's Office―the legal arm of the United States Army―from thirteen uniformed attorneys to more than four hundred. Crowder's recruitment of some of the nation's leading legal scholars, as well as former congressmen and state supreme court judges, helped legitimize President Woodrow Wilson's wartime military and legal policies. As the United States entered World War I in 1917, the army numbered about 120,000 soldiers. The Judge Advocate General's Office was instrumental in extending the military's reach into the everyday lives of citizens to enable the construction of an army of more than four million soldiers by the end of the war. Under Crowder's leadership, the office was responsible for the creation and administration of the Selective Service Act, under which thousands of men were drafted into military service, as well as enforcement of the Espionage Act and wartime prohibition. In this first published history of the Judge Advocate General's Office between the years of 1914 and 1922, Joshua Kastenberg examines not only courts-martial, but also the development of the laws of war and the changing nature of civil-military relations. The Judge Advocate General's Office influenced the legislative and judicial branches of the government to permit unparalleled assertions of power, such as control over local policing functions and the economy. Judge advocates also altered the nature of laws to recognize a person's diminished mental health as a defense in criminal trials, influenced the assertion of US law overseas, and affected the evolving nature of the law of war. This groundbreaking study will appeal to scholars, students, and general readers of US history, as well as military, legal, and political historians.

Though the name of Monto has endured long in folk memory, the area known as Hell was equally notorious, feared and renowned in its day. In this new work Maurice Curtis explores the histories of these dark remnants of Dublin's past, complete with their gambling, duelling and vice, their rowdy taverns and houses of ill repute.

Free Download Amaka Okechukwu, "To Fulfill These Rights: Political Struggle Over Affirmative Action and Open Admissions"
English | ISBN: 0231183097 | 2019 | 328 pages | EPUB | 1189 KB
In 2014 and 2015, students at dozens of colleges and universities held protests demanding increased representation of Black and Latino students and calling for a campus climate that was less hostile to students of color. Their activism recalled an earlier era: in the 1960s and 1970s, widespread campus protest by Black and Latino students contributed to the development of affirmative action and open admissions policies. Yet in the decades since, affirmative action has become a magnet for conservative backlash and in many cases has been completely dismantled.

To Die Gallantly The Battle Of The Atlantic
Free Download Timothy J Runyan, "To Die Gallantly: The Battle Of The Atlantic "
English | ISBN: 0813323320 | | 347 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
They were known as "iron coffins"-the German U-Boats that terrorized Allied shipping during World War II. In this volume commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, historians from both sides of the ocean offer new insights into the conflict. The Battle of the Atlantic was the most important campaign of the war, for Allied success in Europe depended on massive movements of ships, men, and matériel across the Atlantic from the Americas. In spite of an unprecedented Allied shipbuilding effort, German U-boats were causing severe damage to this vital supply line; unless the deadly U-boat menace could be eliminated, the Allies would be unable to defeat Nazi Germany. The cost in lives lost and ships sunk was appalling, but statistics alone do not reflect the human dimension of this most terrible sea fight. It is a story of incredible courage and unspeakable cruelty, one in which calculated risks and life-or-death decisions became commonplace. It is a story of the combined efforts of planners and strategists, spies and codebreakers, naval officers and crews, merchant mariners, and civilians at home in both Allied and Axis nations to achieve an end to the carnage at sea. And it is a story of the triumph of technology, as Allied advances in radar and sonar ultimately led to victory over the German wolfpacks. The book makes an important contribution to the history of World War II, examining both much-studied and lesser-known aspects of this critical campaign. Its contributors provide a comprehensive account of all who participated in this long and costly effort: those who planned, those who fought, those who waited, and those who died.

To Be Indio in Colonial Spanish America
Free Download Mónica Díaz, "To Be Indio in Colonial Spanish America"
English | ISBN: 0826357733 | 2017 | 296 pages | EPUB | 1344 KB
The conquest and colonization of the Americas imposed new social, legal, and cultural categories upon vast and varied populations of indigenous people. The colonizers' intent was to homogenize these cultures and make all of them "Indian." The creation of those new identities is the subject of the essays collected in Díaz's To Be Indio in Colonial Spanish America. Focusing on central Mexico and the Andes (colonial New Spain and Peru), the contributors deepen scholarly knowledge of colonial history and literature, emphasizing the different ways people became and lived their lives as "indios." While the construction of indigenous identities has been a theme of considerable interest among Latin Americanists since the early 1990s, this book presents new archival research and interpretive thinking, offering new material and a new approach to the subject to both scholars of colonial Peru and central Mexico.

Time, work and leisure Life changes in England since 1700
Free Download Hugh Cunningham, "Time, work and leisure: Life changes in England since 1700 "
English | ISBN: 1784993557 | 2016 | 240 pages | EPUB | 439 KB
This book traces the history of the relationship between work and leisure, from the 'leisure preference' of male workers in the eighteenth century, through the increase in working hours in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, to their progressive decline from 1830 to 1970. It examines how trade union action was critical in achieving the decline; how class structured the experience of leisure; how male identity was shaped by both work and leisure; how, in a society that placed high value on work, a 'leisured class' was nevertheless at the apex of political and social power - until it became thought of as 'the idle rich'. Coinciding with the decline in working hours, two further tranches of time were marked out as properly without work: childhood and retirement.

Thunder from the Right Ezra Taft Benson in Mormonism and Politics
Free Download Thunder from the Right: Ezra Taft Benson in Mormonism and Politics By Matthew L. Harris
2019 | 260 Pages | ISBN: 0252084012 | PDF | 15 MB
Ezra Taft Benson's ultra-conservative vision made him one of the most polarizing leaders in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His willingness to mix religion with extreme right-wing politics troubled many. Yet his fierce defense of the traditional family, unabashed love of country, and deep knowledge of the faith endeared him to millions. In Thunder from the Right, a group of veteran Mormon scholars probe aspects of Benson's extraordinary life. Topics include: how Benson's views influenced his actions as Secretary of Agriculture in the Eisenhower Administration; his dedication to the conservative movement, from alliances with Barry Goldwater and the John Birch Society to his condemnation of the civil rights movement as a communist front; how his concept of the principal of free agency became central to Mormon theology; his advocacy of traditional gender roles as a counterbalance to liberalism; and the events and implications of Benson's term as Church president. Contributors: Gary James Bergera, Matthew Bowman, Newell G. Bringhurst, Brian Q. Cannon, Robert A. Goldberg, Matthew L. Harris, J. B. Haws, and Andrea G. Radke-Moss
