The Epigrams of Crinagoras of Mytilene Introduction, Text, Commentary
Free Download Maria Ypsilanti, "The Epigrams of Crinagoras of Mytilene: Introduction, Text, Commentary"
English | ISBN: 0199565821 | 2018 | 536 pages | PDF | 28 MB
Relatively little is known of the life of Crinagoras of Mytilene: a Greek epigrammatist and diplomat who lived between the first centuries BC and AD, he was despatched to Rome as part of the embassies to Julius Caesar and Octavian, was held in high regard by his contemporaries, and divided his life between his home of Mytilene and the centre of the Roman Empire, where he was acquainted with the family of the emperor Augustus. Much of the detail we have to flesh out this brief account comes from his poems, which, in keeping with the genre, draw extensively on his personal experience and on the events of the day to provide a key source for the circumstances of his life. They are also eloquent and dynamic in their own right, and as a corpus they cover a wide thematic range: many were inspired by contemporary political or military events or by personal experiences, observations, or contemplation, though they also include several sepulchral epigrams concerning the deaths of persons

The Environmental Legacy of War on the Hungarian-Ottoman Frontier, c. 1540-1690
Free Download András Vadas, "The Environmental Legacy of War on the Hungarian-Ottoman Frontier, c. 1540-1690 "
English | ISBN: 9463727930 | 2023 | 290 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book is the first monographic attempt to follow the environmental changes that took place in the frontier zone of the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. On the one hand, it looks at how the Ottoman-Hungarian wars affected the landscapes of the Carpathian Basin - specifically, the frontier zone. On the other hand, it examines how the environment was used in the military tactics of the opposing realms. By taking into consideration both perspectives, this book intends to pursue the dynamic interplay between war, environment, and local society in the early modern period.

The End of the Refugee Cycle Refugee Repatriation and Reconstruction
Free Download The End of the Refugee Cycle? : Refugee Repatriation and Reconstruction By Khalid Koser; Richard Black
1999 | 275 Pages | ISBN: 1571817158 | PDF | 1 MB
At the start of the 1990s, there was great optimism that the end of the Cold War might also mean the end of the "refugee cycle" - both a breaking of the cycle of violence, persecution and flight, and the completion of the cycle for those able to return to their homes. The 1990s, it was hoped, would become the "decade of repatriation." However, although over nine million refugees were repatriated worldwide between 1991 and 1995, there are reasons to believe that it will not necessarily be a durable solution for refugees. It certainly has become clear that "the end of the refugee cycle" has been much more complex, and ultimately more elusive, than expected. The changing constructions and realities of refugee repatriation provide the backdrop for this book which presents new empirical research on examples of refugee repatriation and reconstruction. Apart from providing up-to-date material, it also fills a more fundamental gap in the literature which has tended to be based on pedagogical reasoning rather than actual field research. Adopting a global perspective, this volume draws together conclusions from highly varied experiences of refugee repatriation and defines repatriation and reconstruction as part of a wider and interrelated refugee cycle of displacement, exile and return. The contributions come from authors with a wealth of relevant practical and academic experience, spanning the continents of Africa, Asia, Central America, and Europe.

The Emergence of Civilisation Revisited
Free Download The Emergence of Civilisation Revisited By John C. Barrett; Paul Halstead
2004 | 274 Pages | ISBN: 1842171666 | PDF | 7 MB
The history of archaeology is a history of great discoveries and a history of the debate about the human condition. It is a history of how we understand and link to our history, and it is unsurprising then that archaeology changes over time, bringing new perspectives to our view of the past. Thirty years on from Colin Renfrew's landmark publication, The Emergence of Civilisation, a group of Aegean prehistorians came together as part of the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology's Round Table discussions to acknowledge this ground-breaking work and to bring the subject up to date. They focus on the themes that Renfrew brought to archaeology through this work, and which continue to be of significance today: the way we characterise the context and the nature of change; the methodological procedures that should be followed; and the interpretation of the dynamics of past societies. Fourteen papers from the discussions, including contributions from John Cherry, Todd Whitelaw and Renfrew himself, examine a fascinating and diverse section of topics including; settlement, leadership and social status.

The Elusive Human Subject A Psychoanalytical Theory of Subject Relations
Free Download The Elusive Human Subject: A Psychoanalytical Theory of Subject Relations By Roger Kennedy
1998 | 220 Pages | ISBN: 1853433969 | PDF | 18 MB
Through a detailed examination of a whole range of theoretical ideas and the use of clinical illustrations, the author shows the way in which the subjective organization both arises and is impaired; how unity is maintained but also undermined. The essential role of social structive in the subjective organization is discussed, and comparisons made with object relations theory. Finally, detailed consideration is given to the role of the psychoanalyst's subjectivity and of the human element in psychoanalysis. In this book, in which Roger Kennedy has marshalled theory and ideas from psychoanalysis, philosophy and the social sciences, he succeeds in a major re-evaluation of how we describe the Self, and what that means for psychoanalysis.

The Edinburgh Companion to Vegan Literary Studies
Free Download Laura Wright, "The Edinburgh Companion to Vegan Literary Studies "
English | ISBN: 1474493319 | 2022 | 392 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Vegan literary studies has been crystallised over the past few years as a dynamic new specialism, with a transhistorical and transnational scope that both nuances and expands literary history and provides new tools and paradigms through which to approach literary analysis. Vegan studies has emerged alongside the 'animal turn' in the humanities. However, while veganism is often considered as a facet of animal studies, broadly conceived, it is also a distinct entity, an ethical delineator that for many scholars marks a complicated boundary between theoretical pursuit and lived experience.
