Power Politics in Africa
Free Download Samuel Oyewole Olusola Ogunnubi, "Power Politics in Africa"
English | ISBN: 1527560260 | 2020 | 246 pages | PDF | 1513 KB
This collection of essays examines the subject of power politics in Africa, paying special attention to the interests of African regional powers, as well as their capabilities and strategies in the international arena. It provides a theoretical bridge between concerns for militarised national interest, perpetual distrust and insecurity, struggles for power and hegemony in power politics, and the spirit of pan-African solidarity, brotherhood, consensus, cooperation and integration. It is on these bases that this volume offers rich empirical insight into leading regional powers in Africa with special attention given to Nigeria and South Africa. It serves to contribute African perspectives to the field of International Relations, particularly regarding power politics, which is important in terms of Africanising the narratives of a subject matter that is largely considered as Eurocentric in African and other non-Western societies.

Poetry as Prayer in the Sanskrit Hymns of Kashmir
Free Download Poetry as Prayer in the Sanskrit Hymns of Kashmir By Hamsa Stainton
2019 | 352 Pages | ISBN: 0190889810 | PDF | 32 MB
Historically, Kashmir was one of the most dynamic and influential centers of Sanskrit learning and literary production in South Asia. In Poetry as Prayer in the Sanskrit Hymns of Kashmir, Hamsa Stainton investigates the close connection between poetry and prayer in South Asia by studying the history of Sanskrit hymns of praise (stotras) in Kashmir. The book provides a broad introduction to the history and general features of the stotra genre, and it charts the course of these literary hymns in Kashmir from the eighth century to the present. In particular, it offers the first major study in any European language of the Stutikusum=ajali, an important work of religious literature dedicated to the god 'Siva and one of the only extant witnesses to the trajectory of Sanskrit literary culture in fourteenth-century Kashmir. The book also contributes to the study of 'Saivism by examining the ways in which 'Saiva poets have integrated the traditions of Sanskrit literature and poetics, theology (especially non-dualism), and 'Saiva worship and devotion. It substantiates the diverse configurations of 'Saiva bhakti expressed and explored in these literary hymns and the challenges they present for standard interpretations of Hindu bhakti. More broadly, this study of stotras from Kashmir offers new perspectives on the history and vitality of prayer in South Asia and its complex relationships to poetry and poetics.

Poetry and the Anthropocene Ecology, Biology and Technology in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry
Free Download Poetry and the Anthropocene: Ecology, Biology and Technology in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry By Sam Solnick
2016 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 1138941689 | PDF | 3 MB
This book asks what it means to write poetry in and about the Anthropocene, the name given to a geological epoch where humans have a global ecological impact. Combining critical approaches such as ecocriticism and posthumanism with close reading and archival research, it argues that the Anthropocene requires poetry and the humanities to find new ways of thinking about unfamiliar spatial and temporal scales, about how we approach the metaphors and discourses of the sciences, and about the role of those processes and materials that confound humans' attempts to control or even conceptualise them. Poetry and the Anthropocene draws on the work of a series of poets from across the political and poetic spectrum, analysing how understandings of technology shape literature about place, evolution and the tradition of writing about what still gets called Nature. The book explores how writers' understanding of sciences such as climatology or biochemistry might shape their poetry's form, and how literature can respond to environmental crises without descending into agitprop, self-righteousness or apocalyptic cynicism. In the face of the Anthropocene's radical challenges to ethics, aesthetics and politics, the book shows how poetry offers significant ways of interrogating and rendering the complex relationships between organisms and their environments in a world increasingly marked by technology.Tags: Public Policy, Environmental, General, Development, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Business & Economics, Political Science

Plato's Screw
Free Download Linda Janakos, "Plato's Screw"
English | 2014 | pages: 234 | ISBN: 1941137024 | EPUB | 0,4 mb
Fiction. In PLATO'S SCREW, an eccentric physicist and an ambivalent writer hired to follow him to collect impressions of his life find their reality sandwiched between the absurd and the surreal as they search for the pathology of windows, listen to the last sounds before the first utterance, and try out ways to outsmart their inherited inadequacies and social ambiguities. Originally called "Brancusi's Back," and written over a twelve year period, L.D. Janakos started working on this novel long before the nano-world and Snowden's revelations on surveillance jumped into the culture of sensation. As the absurd within the yet unpublished work seemed to jump off the pages into topical reality, it tilted with precision into that gray zone, unhinged and floating without category or permanence inside the absurd within the absurd and the surreal within the surreal.

Plant Minds A Philosophical Defense
Free Download Plant Minds: A Philosophical Defense By Chauncey Maher
2017 | 144 Pages | ISBN: 1138739197 | PDF | 23 MB
The idea that plants have minds can sound improbable, but some widely respected contemporary scientists and philosophers find it plausible. It turns out to be rather tricky to vindicate the presumption that plants do not have minds, for doing so requires getting clear about what plants can do and what exactly a mind is. By connecting the most compelling empirical work on plant behavior with philosophical reflection on the concept of minds, Plant Minds aims to help non-experts begin to think clearly about whether plants have minds. Relying on current consensus ideas about minds and plants, Chauncey Maher first presents the best case for thinking that plants do not have minds. Along the way, however, he unearths an idea at the root of that case, the idea that having a mind requires the capacity to represent the world. In the last chapter, he defends a relatively new and insightful theory of mind that rejects that assumption, making room for the possibility that plants do have minds, primarily because they are alive.

Plagiarism in Latin Literature
Free Download Plagiarism in Latin Literature By Scott McGill
2012 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 1107019370 | PDF | 2 MB
In response to critics who charged him with plagiarism, Virgil is said to have responded that it was easier to steal Hercules' club than a line from Homer. This was to deny the allegations by implying that Virgil was no plagiarist at all, but an author who had done the hard work of making Homer's material his own. Several other texts and passages in Latin literature provide further evidence for accusations and denials of plagiarism. Plagiarism in Latin Literature explores important questions such as, how do Roman writers and speakers define the practice? And how do the accusations and denials function? Scott McGill moves between varied sources, including Terence, Martial, Seneca the Elder and Macrobius' Virgil criticism to explore these questions. In the process, he offers new insights into the history of plagiarism and related issues, including Roman notions of literary property, authorship and textual reuse.
