Free Download University of Hawai'i Alexander Vovin, "Man'yōshū, Book 5: A New English Translation Containing the Original Text, Kana Transliteration, Romanization, Glossing and Commentary" English, Korean, Chinese, Japanese | 2011 | pages: 196 | ISBN: 9004518231, 1906876207 | PDF | 3,7 mb This is the second volume to be published in the 20-volume set. It includes 114 poems (104 tanka, ten choka), traditionally considered to be the zoka genre, although some of them can be classified as benka, since they deal with death and sorrow. It also contains two poems in Chinese. The volume has several long introductions (all written in Chinese) to the poems that follow. All the poems in this volume were composed between AD 724 and 733, which represents a much greater homogeneity in comparison to books one to four. Most of the poems were written by Yamanoue-no Okura (AD660-733), one of the greatest Man'yōshū poets, who was possibly a Korean from Kudara (Paekche), or at least a descendant of Kudara immigrants to Japan. The spelling system in this volume is predominantly phonographic, with only a few exceptions. In addition, the spelling system appears to reflect Early Western Old Japanese, as demonstrated by Bentley (1997, 2002). The same can be said about its overall grammatical features. Free Download Man of No Property By C.S. Andrews 2002 | 338 Pages | ISBN: 1901866661 | EPUB | 2 MB 'In the spring of 1924 I was released from internment where I had been held for a year since the end of the Civil War in what was then the Irish Free State. I was a little over twenty-two years of age.'So begins this extraordinary memoir, in which C.S. ('Todd') Andrews gives a personal history of his varied and distinguished career in public service to the Irish state. The early chapters cover what were, for Andrews and his fellow republicans, difficult years under the government of Cumann na nGeadheal. Andrews describes the ambience of Universtiy College Dublin, where he resumed his studies after the end of the Troubles, and writes with insight and sensitivity of the founding of Fianna Fail, which forced anti-Treaty republicans to decide whether to accept the established political order. Andrews chose the constitutional path, and after Fianna Fail came to power in 1932 his working life, which had begun modestly in the Irish Tourist Association and the ESB, was transformed by his appointment as managing director of the Turf Development Board, later Bord na Mona. This visionary enterprise, undertaken in the face of ridicule from those who saw the bogs as an irremediable symbol of backwardness, was immensely successful, and Andrews gave to it nearly three decades in the prime of his life.Andrews' work for Bord na Mona, and later as chairman of CIE and RTE, brought him into daily contact with Eamon de Valera, Sean Lemass and the other leading political figures of mid-century Ireland, and Andrews writes of these men with an analytical and often acerbic eye. He makes a spirited defence of his closure of uneconomic railway lines and of his handling of labour disputes during his tenure at CIE, and rites bitterly of what he saw as the betrayal of Fianna Fail's idealistic origins by those who sought to enrich the party by cultivating big business.Man of No Property is the plain-spoken, often controversial testament of a singular figure in twentieth-century Irish life, and is necessary reading for anyone who wishes to enderstand the evolution of the Irish state in its first half-century.'The total autobiography adds up to a sharp and penetrating study of the nature of our society. Reading it forces one to stand up and look around.'- The Irish Times'One of the most riveting books I've read for years.'- Sunday Independent'Andrews has become an important historical figure, firstly because of his public life ... A second reason for his historical importance is his two memoirs, Dublin Made Me and Man of No Property. They are easily the most complete and truthful accounts of what it was like to have experienced that extraodinary epoch in Irish history; nothing else quite like them has survived elsewhere.'- Tom Garvin, Magill Free Download Making a Scene in Documentary Film: Iconic Filmmakers Discuss What Works and Why English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032184817 | 203 Pages | PDF (True) | 6 MB This collection of iconic interviews helps demystify the documentary filmmaking process by deconstructing the most relevant and important scenes in some of today's most well-known documentary films. Free Download Eric Pawson, "Making a New Land: Enviromental Histories of New Zealand" English | ISBN: 1877578525 | 2013 | 396 pages | EPUB | 10 MB Making a New Land presents an interdisciplinary perspective on one of the most rapid and extensive transformations in human history: that which followed Maori and then European colonization of New Zealand's temperate islands. This is a new edition of Environmental Histories of New Zealand, first published in 2002, brimming with new content and fresh insights into the causes and nature of this transformation, and the new landscapes and places that it produced. Unusually among environmental histories, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of change, focusing on international as well as local contexts. Its 19 chapters are organized in five broadly chronological parts: Encounters, Colonising, Wild Places, Modernising, and Contemporary Perspectives. These are framed by an editorial introduction and a reflective epilogue. The book is well illustrated with photographs, maps, cartoons and other graphics.
