India Continuity and Change in the Twenty-First Century
Free Download India: Continuity and Change in the Twenty-First Century By John Harriss; Craig Jeffrey; Trent Brown
2020 | 400 Pages | ISBN: 1509539700 | EPUB | 1 MB
India has been catapulted to the centre of world attention. Its rapidly growing economy, new geo-political confidence, and global cultural influence have ensured that people across the world recognise India as one of the main sites of social dynamism in the early twenty-first century. In this book, research leaders John Harriss, Craig Jeffrey and Trent Brown explore in depth the economic, social, and political changes occurring in India today, and their implications for the people of India and the world. Each of the book's fourteen chapters seeks to answer a key question: Is India's democracy under threat? Can India's Growth be sustained? How are youth changing India? Drawing on a wealth of scholarly and popular material as well as their own experience researching the country during this period of major transformation, the authors draw the reader into key debates about economic growth, poverty, environmental justice, the character of Indian democracy, rights and social movements, gender, caste, education, and foreign policy. India, they conclude, has undergone some extraordinary and positive changes since the early 1990s but deeply worrying threats remain: increasing authoritarianism, growing inequality, entrenched poverty, and environmental vulnerability. How India responds to these crucial challenges will shape the world's largest democracy for years to come.

In the Shadow of Revolution Life Stories of Russian Women from 1917 to the Second World War
Free Download In the Shadow of Revolution: Life Stories of Russian Women from 1917 to the Second World War By Sheila Fitzpatrick; Yuri Slezkine
2000 | 456 Pages | ISBN: 0691019487 | PDF | 6 MB
Asked shortly after the revolution about how she viewed the new government, Tatiana Varsher replied, With the wide-open eyes of a historian. Her countrywoman, Zinaida Zhemchuzhnaia, expressed a similar need to take note: I want to write about the way those events were perceived and reflected in the humble and distant corner of Russia that was the Cossack town of Korenovskaia. What these women witnessed and experienced, and what they were moved to describe, is part of the extraordinary portrait of life in revolutionary Russia presented in this book. A collection of life stories of Russian women in the first half of the twentieth century, In the Shadow of Revolution brings together the testimony of Soviet citizens and migrs, intellectuals of aristocratic birth and Soviet milkmaids, housewives and engineers, Bolshevik activists and dedicated opponents of the Soviet regime. In literary memoirs, oral interviews, personal dossiers, public speeches, and letters to the editor, these women document their diverse experience of the upheavals that reshaped Russia in the first half of this century. As is characteristic of twentieth-century Russian women's autobiographies, these life stories take their structure not so much from private events like childbirth or marriage as from great public events. Accordingly the collection is structured around the events these women see as touchstones: the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War of 1918-20; the switch to the New Economic Policy in the 1920s and collectivization; and the Stalinist society of the 1930s, including the Great Terror. Edited by two preeminent historians of Russia and the Soviet Union, the volume includes introductions that investigate the social historical context of these women's lives as well as the structure of their autobiographical narratives.

In the Name of Security - Secrecy, Surveillance and Journalism
Free Download Johan Lidberg, Denis Muller, "In the Name of Security - Secrecy, Surveillance and Journalism"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1783087692 | PDF | pages: 269 | 1.9 mb
The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001 saw the start of the so-called war on terror. The aim of 'In the Name of Security - Secrecy, Surveillance and Journalism' is to assess the impact of surveillance and other security measures on in-depth public interest journalism. How has the global fear-driven security paradigm sparked by 11 September affected journalism? At the core of the book sits what the authors have labeled the 'trust us dilemma'. Governments justify passing, at times, oppressive and far-reaching anti-terror laws to keep citizens safe from terror. By doing so governments are asking the public to trust their good intentions and the integrity of the security agencies. But how can the public decide to trust the government and its agencies if it does not have access to information on which to base its decision? 'In the Name of Security - Secrecy, Surveillance and Journalism' takes an internationally comparative approach using case studies from the powerful intelligence-sharing group known as the Five Eyes consisting of the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Chapters assessing a selection of EU countries and some of the BRICS countries provide additional and important points of comparison to the English-speaking countries that make up the Five Eyes.

In the Mists of Patagonia
Free Download In the Mists of Patagonia by Brian Lawrenson
English | October 2, 2018 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B01LYDVYNT | EPUB | 0.73 Mb
Patagonia is a remote rugged region of South American that is in the south of South America. The region is shared by Chile and Argentina. It is a land of impressive mountains, some snow or ice covered, with fragmented glaciers flowing off its peaks and icefields. These feed into blue coloured glacier formed lakes some with their own icebergs. The "jewel in the crown" as one guide book puts it, is the major drawcard, the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. The three towers after which the park is named was to be the centrepiece for our exploration. Here is the famous "w" trek. We didn't think that it would be easy and it wasn't but we hadn't factored in the unpredictability of the local weather . This made it downright difficult. But it also heightened our sense of achievement.
