Planning the Portland Urban Growth Boundary The Struggle to Transform Trend City
Free Download Sy Adler, "Planning the Portland Urban Growth Boundary: The Struggle to Transform Trend City"
English | ISBN: 087071211X | 2022 | 272 pages | EPUB | 975 KB
In this companion volume to his 2012 book Oregon Plans: The Making of an Unquiet Land-Use Revolution, Sy Adler offers readers a deep analysis of planning Portland's Urban Growth Boundary. Required by one of Oregon's nineteen statewide planning goals, a boundary in the Portland metropolitan area was intended to separate urban land and land that would be urbanized from commercially productive farmland. After adopting the goals, approving the Portland growth boundary in 1979 was the most significant decision the Oregon Land Conservation and Development Commission has ever made, and, more broadly, is a significant milestone in American land-use planning.

Plain Pottery Traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East Production, Use, and Social Significance (UCL Insti
Free Download Claudia Glatz, "Plain Pottery Traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East: Production, Use, and Social Significance (UCL Insti"
English | ISBN: 1629580902 | 2015 | 257 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
The evolution and proliferation of plain and predominantly wheel-made pottery presents a characteristic feature of the societies of the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean since the fourth millennium B.C. This plain pottery has received little detailed archaeological attention in comparison to aesthetically more pleasing and chronologically sensitive decorated traditions. Yet, their simplicity and standardization suggest they are products of craft specialists, the result of high-volume production, and therefore important in understanding the social systems in early complex societies. This volume-reevaluates the role and significance of plain pottery traditions from both historically specific perspectives and from a comparative point of view;-examines the uses and functions of this pottery in relation to social negotiation and group identity formation;-helps scholars understand cross-regional similarities in development and use.

Place, Health, and Diversity
Free Download Melissa D. Giesbrecht, "Place, Health, and Diversity "
English | ISBN: 0367668327 | 2020 | 252 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Although health equity and diversity-focussed research has begun to gain momentum, there is still a paucity of research from health geographers that explicitly explores how geographic factors, such as place, space, scale, community, and location, inform multiple axes of difference. Such axes can include residential location, age, sex, gender, race/ethnicity, culture, religion, socio-economic status, marital status, sexual orientation, education level, and immigration status. Specifically focussing on Canada's rapidly changing society, which is becoming increasingly pluralized and diverse, this book examines the place-health-diversity intersection in this national context. Health geographers are well positioned to offer a valuable contribution to diversity-focussed research because place is inextricably linked to differential experiences of health. For example, access to health care and health promoting services and resources is largely influenced by where one is physically and socially situated within the web of diversity. Furthermore, applying geographic concepts like place, in both the physical and social sense, allows researchers to explore multiple axes of difference simultaneously. Such geographic perspectives, as presented in this book, offer new insights into what makes diverse people, in diverse places, with access to diverse resources (un)healthy in different ways in Canada and beyond.

Pixilated Practices Media, Ritual, and Identity
Free Download Christopher Peyton Miller, "Pixilated Practices: Media, Ritual, and Identity"
English | ISBN: 1725260220 | 2020 | 120 pages | EPUB | 199 KB
Media is a big part of our lives. We see and hear it everywhere. In this book Miller demonstrates how media has taken the place of ritual(s). Our everyday lives are constantly facilitated by media rituals. This media ritual process exists regardless of its content and is a phenomenon that overcomes our subjective experience with a constant flux of representations and seduction. Memory and mind are in a perpetual process of re-imaging, distortion, and violence. Human relationships can be comprised of sheer information sharing from any distance around the globe. The objective world around us is experienced and interpreted through the virtual worlds we are forced to participate in. The dialectic is barred and the flood of media images captures us in the univocal. Persons then understand that truth comes from their singular, isolated, and violated self. Therefore, the body in the real world feels foreign and we feel dissociated and anxious, reaching in a vain attempt for more media to fill and restore our bodily and spiritual needs. Our personhood and everything that we are lie under the influence of this media ritual process.

English | ISBN: 1138978485 | 2016 | 318 pages | EPUB | 720 KB
Despite efforts of contemporary reformers to curb the availability of dime novels, series books, and paperbacks, Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes reveals how many readers used them as means of resistance and how fictional characters became models for self-empowerment. These literary genres, whose value has long been underestimated, provide fascinating insight into the formation of American popular culture and identity. Through these mass-produced, widely read books, Deadwood Dick, Old Sleuth, and Jessie James became popular heroes that fed the public's imagination for the last western frontier, detective tales, and the myth of the outlaw. Women, particularly those who were poor and endured hard lives, used the literature as means of escape from the social, economic, and cultural suppression they experienced in the nineteenth century. In addition to the insight this book provides into texts such as "The Bride of the Tomb," the Nick Carter Series, and Edward Stratemeyer's rendition of the Lizzie Borden case, readers will find interesting information аbout:

Piezoelectric Electromechanical Transducers for Underwater Sound, Part III & IV
Free Download Piezoelectric Electromechanical Transducers for Underwater Sound, Part III & IV
English | 2022 | ISBN: 9781644698273 | 573 Pages | True PDF | 12.1 MB
The book presents a broad-scope analysis of piezoelectric electromechanical transducers and the related aspects of practical transducer design for underwater applications. It uses an energy method for analyzing transducer problems that provides the physical insight important for the understanding of electromechanical devices. Application of the method is first illustrated with transducer examples that can be modeled as systems with a single degree of freedom, (such as spheres, short cylinders, bars and flexural disks and plates made of piezoelectric ceramics). Thereupon, transducers are modeled as devices with multiple degrees of freedom.
