A Sephardi Sea Jewish Memories across the Modern Mediterranean
Free Download Dario Miccoli, "A Sephardi Sea: Jewish Memories across the Modern Mediterranean "
English | ISBN: 0253062926 | 2022 | 236 pages | PDF | 13 MB
A Sephardi Sea tells the story of Jews from the southern shore of the Mediterranean who, between the late 1940s and the mid-1960s, migrated from their country of birth for Europe, Israel, and beyond. It is a story that explores their contrasting memories of and feelings for a Sephardi Jewish world in North Africa and Egypt that is lost forever but whose echoes many still hear. Surely, some of these Jewish migrants were already familiar with their new countries of residence because of colonial ties or of Zionism, and often spoke the language. Why, then, was the act of leaving so painful and why, more than fifty years afterward, is its memory still so tangible?

A Scientific Approach to Improving Animal Research in Biomedicine Giving Animals a Chance - Bradley K. Weiner
Free Download A Scientific Approach to Improving Animal Research in Biomedicine: Giving Animals a Chance - Bradley K. Weiner
English | 2023 | 72 Pages | ISBN: 3031246764 | True PDF , EPUB | 1.95 MB
This book examines animal research conducted with the goal of medical translation to humans. It is written by Dr. Bradley Weiner, a surgeon who is active at a high level clinically and in biomedical research. After documenting that the vast majority of biomedical animal research fails to result in benefits to humans via translation, the book examines the sources of such failure; including the failure to justify the use of animals, the failure to properly apply scientific methods, the failure to perform the research properly in the lab, the failure to consider the possibility of translation a priori, and systematic sources of failure built into the biomedical research enterprise. The book then explores options to improve the situation, for the benefit of both the animals and humans.

A Prosentential Theory of Truth
Free Download Dorothy Grover, "A Prosentential Theory of Truth"
English | 1992 | pages: 301 | ISBN: 0691073996, 069160293X, 0691632383 | PDF | 10,2 mb
In a number of influential articles published since 1972, Dorothy Grover has developed the prosentential theory of truth. Brought together and published with a new introduction, these essays are even more impressive as a group than they were as single contributions to philosophy and linguistics. Denying that truth has an explanatory role, the prosentential theory does not address traditional truth issues like belief, meaning, and justification. Instead, it focuses on the grammatical role of the truth predicate and asserts that "it is true" is a prosentence, functioning much as a pronoun does. Grover defends the theory by indicating how it can handle notorious paradoxes like the Liar, as well as by analyzing some English truth-usages. The introduction to the volume surveys traditional theories of truth, including correspondence, pragmatic, and coherence theories. It discusses the essays to come and, finally, considers the implications of the prosentential theory for other theories. Despite the fact that the prosentential theory dismisses the "nature of truth" as a red herring, Grover shows that there are important aspects of traditional truth theories that prosentential theorists have the option of endorsing.

A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications
Free Download James S. Walker, "A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications "
English | ISBN: 0849382769 | | 168 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The rapid growth of wavelet applications-speech compression and analysis, image compression and enhancement, and removing noise from audio and images-has created an explosion of activity in creating a theory of wavelet analysis and applying it to a wide variety of scientific and engineering problems. It becomes important, then, that engineers and scientists have a working understanding of wavelets. Until now, however, the study of wavelets has been beyond the mathematical grasp of many who need this understanding. Most treatments of the subject involve ideas from functional analysis, harmonic analysis, and other difficult mathematical techniques.

A Philosophy of Sacred Nature Prospects for Ecstatic Naturalism
Free Download Leon Niemoczynski, "A Philosophy of Sacred Nature: Prospects for Ecstatic Naturalism"
English | ISBN: 0739199668 | 2014 | 218 pages | PDF | 1137 KB
A Philosophy of Sacred Nature introduces Robert Corrington's philosophical thought, "ecstatic naturalism," which seeks to recognize nature's self-transforming potential. Ecstatic naturalism is a philosophical-theological perspective, deeply seated in a semiotic cosmology and psychosemiosis, and it radically and profoundly probes into the mystery of nature's perennial self-fissuring of nature natured and nature naturing. Edited by Leon Niemoczynski and Nam T. Nguyen, this collection aims to allow readers to see what can be done with ecstatic naturalism, and what directions, interpretations, and creative uses that doing can take. A thorough exploration of the prospects of ecstatic naturalism, this book will appeal to scholars of Continental philosophy, religious naturalism, and American pragmatism.
