Man, Woman, and Marriage Small Group Processes in the Family
Free Download Alan L. Grey, "Man, Woman, and Marriage: Small Group Processes in the Family"
English | ISBN: 0202362329 | 2008 | 232 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In "Man, Woman and Marriage", noted experts discuss such subjects as the ways in which people choose their mates, how the family social system can entrap its members in neurotic "games," and the complex nature of marital love. Each of the essays has been significant in major controversies on family research and represents a progressive exploration of the "psychosocial" aspects of marriage and family life in the United States.Alan L. Grey's penetrating Introduction traces the history of family research, reviews earlier theories of social interaction, discusses typical research approaches, and furnishes a stimulating commentary on each paper that enumerates the key ideas and themes most relevant to the main emphasis of the debate. Representative of the variety of viewpoints highlighted in this book are the pioneer efforts of Robert F. Winch and his co-workers, and the critical evaluations by George Levinger and Roland G. Tharp as they point out the numerous complexities of the interpersonal process. At the same time, Gerald Bauman and his co-workers demonstrate the use of more flexible and sensitive research devices, Melvin Cohen shows evidence of a type of family homeostasis, and Mirra Komarovsky offers a social-class comparison of typical kinds of husband-wife relationships.Despite the contrasting opinion presented in the volume, the central theme runs through much of social science - the quest for better descriptions of small group process and the actual ways in which family participants affect one another. Bringing together original source materials that are both controversial and cross-disciplinary, "Man, Woman, and Marriage" promotes classroom discussion and is of immediate significance to all studies of marriage and family life whatever social-science discipline is emphasized.

Male Homosexuality in 21st-Century Thailand A Longitudinal Study of Young, Rural, Same-Sex-Attracted Men Coming of Age
Free Download Jan W. de Lind van Wijngaarden, "Male Homosexuality in 21st-Century Thailand: A Longitudinal Study of Young, Rural, Same-Sex-Attracted Men Coming of Age "
English | ISBN: 1785276255 | 2021 | 218 pages | EPUB | 336 KB
This book presents the very first analysis of male homosexuality in modern rural Thailand that is based on sociological/anthropological research directly with 25 young same-sex attracted men. It explores changes in the way men view and describe their sexuality over time by interviewing them three times over a period of around 18 months. The men are followed during an important transition in their lives: the end of their high school years and the end (in most cases) of their life as a child with parents or extended family at a rural home. Nearly all decided to move to a city to continue their education or to find work. Some also had stints with sex work in one of Thailand's well-known centers for prostitution. For nearly all men, this transition brought them into contact with new ideas about gender and sexuality, and many experienced an abrupt increase in their opportunities to have sex, leading to a readjustment of their moral universes. The book presents significant new insights about the Thai sex/gender system, particularly on how it is affected by processes of globalization and the ascent of the Internet and mobile phones as tools for dating and romance.

Malanggan Art, Memory and Sacrifice
Free Download Susanne Küchler, "Malanggan: Art, Memory and Sacrifice "
English | ISBN: 185973622X | 2002 | 256 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Shortlisted for the Katharine Briggs Folkore Award 2003Malanggan are among the most treasured possessions in the Pacific, yet they continue to confound anthropologists. Central to funerals in New Ireland, these 'death' figures are intended to decompose as symbolic representations of the dead. Wrapped in images that are conceived of as 'skins', they are both visually complex and intriguing. This book is the first to interpret these mysterious agents of resemblance and connection as having a cognitive rather than a linguistic basis. Found in nearly every ethnographic museum in the world, Malanggan collections have been left virtually untouched. This original study begins by tracing the history of the collections and moves on to consider the role these artefacts play in sacrifice, ritual and exchange. What is the relationship between Malanggan and memory? How can Malanggan be understood as a life force as well as a vehicle for thought? In an analysis of the cognitive aspects of Malanggan, Küchler offers a highly original conceptualization of the centrality of the knot as a mode of being, thinking and binding in the Pacific. Malanggan: Art, Memory and Sacrifice is a groundbreaking study. Based on fifteen years of fieldwork and collection research, it provides an incisive new take on one of the Pacific's classic puzzles, as well as a wealth of new information and resources for anthropologists, collectors and curators alike.

Free Download Making the Entrepreneurial Transition: Understanding the Challenges of Women Entre-Employees
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031292103 | 194 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2 MB
Entre-employees are those who work for an organization while running their own company, with no interest in the transition to full-time entrepreneurship. This book explores the history, challenges, and leadership development of women entre-employees. The author examines the impact of COVID as well as race and sexism in the workplace on women entre-employees. She also discusses how women are more likely to embrace community-driven businesses, which often face slow growth. Given these challenges, the author proposes ways that employers can support women entre-employees, who have been proven to be valuable workers. Using the life stories of women entre-employees, this useful addition to the entrepreneurship field will appeal to entrepreneurship scholars as well as those interested in topics related to leadership and gender at work.

Making Sense Through Music Perceptions of the Sacred at Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht (Religion and Society)
Free Download Lieke Wijnia, "Making Sense Through Music: Perceptions of the Sacred at Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht (Religion and Society) "
English | ISBN: 3110558246 | 2022 | 289 pages | EPUB | 449 KB
In The Netherlands, the arts have gained a sacralized status, while religion is increasingly viewed through the lens of heritage. The dynamic resonance of sacred forms this results in, is exemplary for the postsecular. Exploring this resonance, this book offers a strong counterweight to the popular trope of the arts having replaced religion in secularized societies. Instead it approaches artistic performance, religion, and its heritage as mutually engaging sacred forms. Lieke Wijnia thoroughly connects theoretical perspectives on the sacred with ethnographic research at the annual festival Musica Sacra Maastricht. She explores the continued relevance of a broad conceptual approach to the sacred, as well as the practical side to negotiating the sacred at the festival. The resulting analyses shed new light on topics like musical performance as generator of the sacred, how art and heritage impact the continuity of religion in secularized societies, and the fragility of artistic performance in the contemporary fragmented framework of the sacred. This book offers an innovative and interdisciplinary interpretation of the continuing significant role of art and religion in postsecular societies.
