Japheth ben Ali's Book of Jeremiah A Critical Edition and Linguistic Analysis of the Judaeo-Arabic Translation
Free Download Japheth ben Ali's Book of Jeremiah: A Critical Edition and Linguistic Analysis of the Judaeo-Arabic Translation By Joshua A. Sabih
2009 | 500 Pages | ISBN: 1845533380 | PDF | 14 MB
This volume deals with three themes: medieval Judaism, Arabic and Hebrew sociolinguistics, and Arabic Bible translation. Within Medieval Judaism, the Karaite Jews became a prosperous community under the banners of Islam. One of the most salient signs of the Karaite community's strength and internal cohesion was the extensive scientific contribution that it made to the fields of Biblical studies, Hebrew philology and philosophy. This book presents for the first time a critical edition of one of the works of the leading Karaite scholars in biblical exegeses and translation, Japheth ben Ali's Judaeo-Arabic translation of the "Book of Jeremiah", drawing on five medieval manuscripts. As the majority of Karaite works, including Bible manuscripts, are in Judaeo-Arabic, relatively few of them have been published. A number of the Karaite Bible manuscripts were written in Arabic script, resulting in their being neglected by scholars, despite the significance of these manuscripts to the history of medieval Judaism and Bible textual Studies. The author of this volume focuses on some of the most important issues in the field of sociolinguistics, namely language-contact, diglossia and the status of both Arabic and Hebrew in the medieval Jewish literary system. Equally important is the issue of the script-in-use (Hebrew or Arabic), which was a major subject of debate among the Rabbinates and the Karaites. Indeed, the language and the script used in these manuscripts will help us re-evaluate the established theories about the language-situation and literary systems in medieval Islamic and Jewish societies. The value of translating the Hebrew Bible into Arabic was unparalleled in medieval inter-religious scholarship. For Muslim scholars it was their only access to the Jewish Bible. The contribution of the Karaites to this field is enormous, and this work offers us a unique window into the Karaite theory of Biblical hermeneutics.

Is Landscape... Essays on the Identity of Landscape
Free Download Charles Waldheim, "Is Landscape... ?: Essays on the Identity of Landscape"
English | 2015 | pages: 366 | ISBN: 1138018449, 1138018473 | PDF | 26,2 mb
Is Landscape . . . ? surveys multiple and myriad definitions of landscape. Rather than seeking a singular or essential understanding of the term, the collection postulates that landscape might be better read in relation to its cognate terms across expanded disciplinary and professional fields. The publication pursues the potential of multiple provisional working definitions of landscape to both disturb and develop received understandings of landscape architecture. These definitions distinguish between landscape as representational medium, academic discipline, and professional identity. Beginning with an inquiry into the origins of the term itself, Is Landscape . . . .? features essays by a dozen leading voices shaping the contemporary reading of landscape as architecture and beyond.

Industrial Drying Systems
Free Download Industrial Drying Systems: Guidelines for Agriculture, Food, and Wood Products
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031318625 | 629 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 9 MB
This book stands as a manual and ready reference for the range of professionals involved in industrial drying. It addresses problems connected with most industrial drying systems, too often designed by those with limited formal engineering training in an environment of minimal regulatory oversight. The author explains how many existing drying systems are dangerous and pose fire hazards, create unhealthy working conditions, are highly energy inefficient, and have very little to no primary modeling of key process variables. Equipping readers with the necessary competencies to contend with issues in conducting studies, developing new designs; manufacturing, installing, and servicing industrial drying systems, this volume is ideal for engineers, OEMS, contractors, service technicians, scientists; agriculture, food, wood products manufacturers; and insurance underwriters.
