Holy Terror Jesus in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas
Free Download J.R.C. Cousland, "Holy Terror: Jesus in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas "
English | ISBN: 0567668169 | 2017 | 160 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Infancy Gospel of Thomas (or Paidika) is one of the most unusual gospels in the Christian tradition. Instead of revealing the compassionate Jesus so familiar to us from the biblical Gospels, it confronts its readers with a very different Jesus - a child who sometimes acts like a holy terror, killing and harming others for trifling faults. So why is Jesus portrayed as acting in such an 'unchristian' fashion? To address this question, Cousland focuses on three interconnected representations of Jesus in the Paidika: Jesus as holy terror, as child, and as miracle-working saviour. Cousland endeavours to show that, despite the differing character of these three roles, they present a unified picture of Jesus. His unusual behaviour arises from his 'growing pains' as a developing child, who is at the same time both human and divine. Cousland's volume is the first detailed examination of the Christology of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and provides a fresh and engaging approach to a topic not often discussed in representations of Jesus.

Free Download History of the British Army, 1714-1783: An Institutional History by Stephen Conway
English | May 11, 2021 | ISBN: 1526711400 | 224 pages | PDF | 5.54 Mb
Much has been written about the British army's campaigns during the many wars it fought in the eighteenth century, but for over 150 years no one has attempted to produce a history of the army as an institution during this period. That is why Stephen Conway's perceptive and detailed study is so timely and important. Taking into account the latest scholarship, he considers the army's legal status, political control and administration, its system of recruitment, the relationships between officers and men, and the social and economic as well as constitutional interactions of the army with British and other societies.

Globalization, Social Movements, and Peacebuilding (Syracuse Studies on Peace and Conflict Resolution
Free Download Jackie Smith, "Globalization, Social Movements, and Peacebuilding (Syracuse Studies on Peace and Conflict Resolution"
English | 2013 | pages: 312 | ISBN: 0815633211 | PDF | 25,7 mb
Each year, governments spend billions of dollars on peacekeeping efforts around the world, and much more is spent on humanitarian aid to refugees and other victims of armed struggle. Yet research shows that nearly half of all countries experiencing civil war see renewed violent conflict within five years of a peace agreement. How do we account for such a poor track record? The authors in this volume consider how global capitalism affects fragile peace processes, arguing that the international economic system itself is a major contributor to violent conflict. By including the work of anthropologists, economists, religious studies experts, sociologists, and political scientists, this book presents a broad yet thorough exploration of the complexities of peacebuilding in a global market economy. Included in the volume are specific studies of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, as well as considerations of conflicts on the global scale.
