Drawing on a study of variation in the performance of four ethnic parties in India, this book develops a theory of ethnic party performance in "patronage democracies"-a family of democracies with distinct patterns of political behavior as well as a new interpretation of Indian democracy. Demonstrating the connection between India's state-dominated economy and the behavior of its voters and politicians, it includes an extensive study of the Bahujan Samaj Party and contemporary ethnic politics in India.

Who Needs Migrant Workers Labour Shortages, Immigration, and Public Policy
Free Download Bridget Anderson, "Who Needs Migrant Workers?: Labour Shortages, Immigration, and Public Policy"
English | 2010 | pages: 352 | ISBN: 0199580596, 0199653615 | PDF | 2,3 mb
Are migrant workers needed to "do the jobs that locals will not do" or are they simply a more exploitable labor force? Do they have a better "work ethic" or are they less able to complain? Is migrant labor the solution to "skills shortages" or actually part of the problem? This book provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing the demand for migrant workers in high-income countries. It demonstrates how a wide range of government policies, often unrelated to migration, contribute to creating a growing demand for migrant labor. This demand can persist even during economic downturns. The book includes quantitative and qualitative analyses of the changing role of migrants in the UK economy. The empirical chapters include in-depth examinations of the nature of staff shortages and the use of migrant workers in six sectors: health; social care; hospitality; food production; construction; and financial services.

What Is Water The History of a Modern Abstraction
Free Download Jamie Linton, "What Is Water?: The History of a Modern Abstraction"
English | 2010 | pages: 352 | ISBN: 0774817011, 077481702X | PDF | 2,1 mb
We all know what water is, and we often take it for granted. But the spectre of a worldwide water crisis suggests that there might be something fundamentally wrong with the way we think about water. Jamie Linton dives into the history of water as an abstract concept, stripped of its environmental, social, and cultural contexts. Reduced to a scientific abstraction - to mere H20 - this concept has given modern society licence to dam, divert, and manipulate water with apparent impunity. Part of the solution to the water crisis involves reinvesting water with social content, thus altering the way we see water. An original take on a deceptively complex issue, What Is Water? offers a fresh approach to a fundamental problem.

English | ISBN: 3110683334 | 2021 | 900 pages | EPUB, PDF | 8 MB + 23 MB
In May 1940 the German Wehrmacht invaded Northern and Western Europe. The subsequent occupation of Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France brought the Jewish population of these countries both established residents and refugees under German control. From 1942 Jews throughout Western Europe were required to wear the Jewish star and most had to perform forced labour. By this point, deportation from France and Luxembourg to the ghettos and extermination camps had already begun, and it was imminent in the remaining occupied countries.

Well-being, Personal Wholeness and the Social Fabric
Free Download James R. Harrison Doru Costache, Darren Cronshaw, "Well-being, Personal Wholeness and the Social Fabric"
English | 2017 | pages: 383 | ISBN: 1443898589 | PDF | 1,7 mb
Well-being is a familiar term in academic literature and public discourse. It captures the imagination by addressing issues related to the social good and the quest for personal happiness. It embraces a wide variety of concerns: age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, self-esteem, health, class, education, institution and ecosystems, among many issues. Well-being studies focus on the welfare of the world and its inhabitants, bringing holistic and transformative perspectives to bear. The Christian faith has been a powerful contributor to this tradition over the centuries. Human beings, made in the image of God, are called to live transformed lives through the Spirit of Christ in communities of grace and reconciliation for the benefit of others, caring for our planet in the expectation of Gods new creation. What difference does the study of well-being from a Christian perspective make?

War and Peace in the Caucasus Russia's Troubled Frontier
Free Download Vicken Cheterian, "War and Peace in the Caucasus: Russia's Troubled Frontier"
English | 2008 | pages: 406 | ISBN: 185065929X, 1850659877 | PDF | 19,7 mb
After the collapse of the Soviet Union the Caucasus was wracked by ethnic and separatist violence as the peoples of the region struggled for self-determination. Vicken Cheterian, who spent many years as a reporter and analyst covering the region's conflicts, asks why nationalism emerged as a dominant political current, and why, of the many nationalist movements that emerged, some led to violence while others did not. He explains also why minority rebellions were victorious against larger armies, in mountainous Karabakh, Abkhazia, and in the first war of Chechnya, and discusses the ongoing instability and armed resistance in the North Caucasus. He concludes his book by examining chapters the great power competition between Russia, the US, and the EU over the oil and gas resources of the Caspian region.

Wanted Cultured Ladies Only! Female Stardom and Cinema in India, 1930s-1950s
Free Download Neepa Majumdar, "Wanted Cultured Ladies Only!: Female Stardom and Cinema in India, 1930s-1950s"
English | 2009 | pages: 272 | ISBN: 0252034325, 0252076281 | PDF | 2,9 mb
Wanted Cultured Ladies Only! maps out the early culture of cinema stardom in India from its emergence in the silent era to the decade after Indian independence in the mid-twentieth century. Neepa Majumdar combines readings of specific films and stars with an analysis of the historical and cultural configurations that gave rise to distinctly Indian notions of celebrity. She argues that discussions of early cinematic stardom in India must be placed in the context of the general legitimizing discourse of colonial "improvement" that marked other civic and cultural spheres as well, and that "vernacular modernist" anxieties over the New Woman had limited resonance here. Rather, it was through emphatically nationalist discourses that Indian cinema found its model for modern female identities.
