The Return of the Polis The Use and Meanings of the Word Polis in Archaic and Classical Sources (Historia - Einzelschriften)
Free Download The Return of the Polis: The Use and Meanings of the Word Polis in Archaic and Classical Sources (Historia - Einzelschriften) by Mogens Herman Hansen
English | December 31, 2007 | ISBN: 3515090541 | 276 pages | PDF | 2.00 Mb
Polis, in plural poleis, is the word the ancient Greeks used to describe their principal type of state and community and the most common of all nouns in ancient Greek. In Archaic and Classical sources there are over 11,000 attestations of the word, and they show that it was used in two different senses: (1) town (sometimes including the hinterland) and (2) state (sometimes including the territory). Often it carries both senses simultaneously and denotes both the state and its urban centre. The Copenhagen Polis Centre (1993-2005) conducted a number of investigations into the use and meanings of the term polis in all Archaic and Classical sources to find out what the Greeks thought a polis was. The present volume is a thoroughly revised and updated comprehensive publication of all these studies, to which four new studies have been added. They show that the two different meanings of the word polis are connected through their reference: with very few exceptions every polis town was the urban centre of a polis state, and conversely: virtually every polis state had an urban centre called a polis in the sense of town.

The Princely Court Medieval Courts and Culture in North-West Europe, 1270-1380
Free Download The Princely Court: Medieval Courts and Culture in North-West Europe, 1270-1380 by Malcolm Vale
English | February 14, 2002 | ISBN: 0198205295 | 442 pages | PDF | 14 Mb
In this engaging work, Malcolm Vale sets out to recapture the splendor of court culture in Western Europe during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Exploring the time between the death of St Louis and the rise of Burgundian power in the Low Countries, he illuminates a period in the history of princes and court life previously overshadowed by that of the courts of the dukes of Burgundy. The result is a fascinating evaluation of the nature and role of the court in European history, and a celebration of a forgotten age.

The Political Economy of Upgrading Regimes Brazil and beyond
Free Download The Political Economy of Upgrading Regimes: Brazil and beyond
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031340019 | 407 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 8 MB
Today's middle-income countries tend to be locked in a middle-income trap, unable to transition to higher income levels due to rising costs and declining competitiveness. While there is a broad consensus that upgrading these economies towards innovation-led growth is imperative, countless institutional and political economy obstacles remain. This book brings together analytical perspectives from comparative political economy, innovation studies, and development economics for the study of technological upgrading. Its distinctive contribution is the development of an innovative theoretical framework, named upgrading regimes, combining and extending the comparative capitalism and innovation system perspectives. It explores the usefulness of this approach by providing an indepth assessment of the political economy of upgrading in Brazil under the Workers' Party governments. As the politics of technological upgrading will be one of the crucial research areas in the years to come, this book promises to become a key reference point in this debate.

The Omega Epiphanies
Free Download A R Roberts, "The Omega Epiphanies"
English | 2018 | pages: 391 | ISBN: 1478793961, 1977201032 | PDF | 2,1 mb
The first apocalyptic visions of the end times were recorded two thousand years ago in the book of Revelation. Then in the 1970s, the little grey aliens began showing similar scenes of chaos and destruction to the thousands of people they abducted ... telling them that these things are going to happen. Do their warnings and Revelation's prophecies refer to the same thing? Will the earth be destroyed in a final catastrophic event that will render humanity extinct? Mass extinctions have occurred in the distant past and scientists agree that it will inevitably happen again. But what exactly is it that is going to happen? And when? And how would extraterrestrials or anyone two thousand years ago have advance knowledge of such a doomsday scenario? If what they predict is true, the big question is ... Will humanity survive, and might it be on another world? These and other related issues are thoroughly examined in this book. There are, however, clues in the UFO activity of today, and in the Bible, as to what the ultimate outcome will be. Putting aside the mystical, miraculous, and supernatural innuendos associated with many of the Bible's stories, when viewed in a logical context, there is an alien agenda designed to ensure the survival of the human species through a process of accelerated evolution. Technology exponentially advanced in the twentieth century when Tesla, Ford, Bell, and the Wright brothers, not to mention Einstein, von Braun, and others, appeared on the scene at the same time. These men created the technologies we rely on today: electric power and light, communications, transportation, and aerospace technology-the technologies that suddenly enabled us to send men to the moon. A logical evaluation of the biblical narrative sheds light on today's UFO activity, and likewise, today's UFO activity sheds light on extraterrestrial involvement during biblical times. The Omega Epiphanies is a journey through the biblical era from the creat

The Kurds and the State Evolving National Identity in Iraq, Turkey, and Iran
Free Download Denise Natali, "The Kurds and the State: Evolving National Identity in Iraq, Turkey, and Iran"
English | 2005 | pages: 270 | ISBN: 0815630840 | PDF | 29,5 mb
In tracing the evolution of Kurdish nationalism, Denise Natali shows that, contrary to popular theories, there is nothing natural or fixed about Kurdish identity or the configuration that Kurdish nationalism assumes. Rather, Kurdish nationalism has been shaped by the development of nation-states in the region. Although Kurdish communities have maintained some shared sense of Kurdishness, Kurdayeti (the mobilization of Kurdish identity) is interwoven with a much larger series of identities within the "political space" of each Kurdish group. Different notions of inclusion and exclusion have modified the political and cultural opportunities of Kurds to express their ethnic identities, and opening the possibility of assuming alternative identities over time. With this book Natali makes a significant contribution to theoretical, empirical, and policy-based scholarship on the Middle East, the plight of the Kurds, ethnonationalism, and ethnopolitical conflict. Hers is the first comparative work to examine Kurdish nationalism as a function of diverse political spaces. As a vital addition to the literature in the field, this book will supplant a number of standard texts on the Kurds.
