We are taught to believe in originals. In art and architecture in particular, original objects vouch for authenticity, value, and truth, and require our protection and preservation. The nineteenth century, however, saw this issue differently. In a culture of reproduction, plaster casts of building fragments and architectural features were sold throughout Europe and America and proudly displayed in leading museums. The first comprehensive history of these full-scale replicas,

Painting Amara West The Technology and Experience of Colour in New Kingdom Nubia
Free Download Kate Fulcher, "Painting Amara West: The Technology and Experience of Colour in New Kingdom Nubia "
English | ISBN: 9042945265 | 2022 | 126 pages | PDF | 25 MB
The first in a series of volumes generated by the British Museum's Amara West Research Project, this explores the use of pigments and the experience of colour in the town founded around 1300BC as a centre of the pharaonic administration of Upper Nubia (Kush). Combining scientific analyses, archaeological fieldwork, and modern ethnographic perspectives, the research provides nuanced perspectives on lived experience at Amara West. This study outlines the evidence for paint products at the site from pigments, palettes, grindstones, painted walls, and coffin fragments, and uses several scientific techniques to identify the materials used. The evidence is used alongside interviews with current residents of the area around Amara West, and experiments with grinding and painting, to discuss the importance of the process of collecting and preparing the paint in ancient times, and its place in the interconnected taskspaces in the ancient town.

Of Religion and Empire Missions, Conversion, and Tolerance in Tsarist Russia
Free Download Of Religion and Empire: Missions, Conversion, and Tolerance in Tsarist Russia By Robert P. Geraci, Michael Khodarkovsky
2001 | 281 Pages | ISBN: 0801433274 | PDF | 68 MB
Russia's ever-expanding imperial boundaries encompassed diverse peoples and religions. Yet Russian Orthodoxy remained inseparable from the identity of the Russian empire-state, which at different times launched conversion campaigns not only to "save the souls" of animists and bring deviant Orthodox groups into the mainstream, but also to convert the empire's numerous Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Catholics, and Uniates. This book is the first to investigate the role of religious conversion in the long history of Russian state building. How successful were the Church and the state in proselytizing among religious minorities? How were the concepts of Orthodoxy and Russian nationality shaped by the religious diversity of the empire? What was the impact of Orthodox missionary efforts on the non-Russian peoples, and how did these peoples react to religious pressure? In chapters that explore these and other questions, this book provides geographical coverage from Poland and European Russia to the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia, and Alaska. The editors' introduction and conclusion place the twelve original essays in broad historical context and suggest patterns in Russian attitudes toward religion that range from attempts to forge a homogeneous identity to tolerance of complexity and diversity.Contributors: Eugene Clay, Arizona State University; Robert P. Novell's guide to creating IntranetWare Intranets
Free Download Novell's guide to creating IntranetWare Intranets By Siyan, Karanjit S.
1997 | 777 Pages | ISBN: 0764545310 | DJVU | 67 MB
Preface IntranetWare is a powerful platform from Novell that includes many important services (such as File, Print, Directory, and Application services). One of the very important application services that is bundled with IntranetWare is the Novell Web Server. This book examines how the Novell Web Server can be used as the centerpiece of an intranetwork (or intranet) strategy within an organization The book is important for anyone who wants to evaluate or deploy the Novell Web Server in an intranet. This book is organized as follows: Chapter 1. This chapter explains the role of intranetworks and examines the business needs of intranets. Intranets can be built with a variety of protocols and components, which are discussed in this chapter. Chapter 2. This chapter explains in depth the features of the Novell Web Server that are most useful in the context of an intranet. Chapter 3. The Novell Web Server runs on top of NetWare 4. Before you can install the Novell Web Server, you must have an existing NetWare 4 server to install the Novell Web Server. If you don't have an existing NetWare 4 server platform that you can use, you must install a new NetWare 4 server. This chapter shows you not only how to install a Novell Web Server, but also how to install a NetWare 4 server from scratch. The installation procedures are described step-by-step with detailed information on how to make the decisions for installing the software. The procedures for installing Web browser clients and Internet Protocol Exchange (IPX) gateways are also explained. Chapter 4. Once the Novell Web Server is installed, you must configure it. The Novell Web Server comes with configuration tools such as the Web Manager. This chapter discusses procedures for configuring the Novell Web Server. The Web Manager keeps configuration information for the Novell Web Server in some critical files. The syntax of these critical files is described. Chapter 5. After the Novell Web Server has been configured, you must create the content for the Web site. This chapter discusses the fundamentals of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), which is the language for specifying Web content. All the basic HTML features are explained with several examples so that you can create Web content, or understand how various authoring tools create Web content. Chapter 6. The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is used to link external applications to the Web server, and to create dynamic content. This chapter discusses the Remote Common Gateway Interface (RCGI) and Local Common Gateway Interface (LCGI) mechanisms of the CGI for the Novell Web Server, including numerous examples of RCGI and LCGI scripts. The Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) types that are used for identifying Web content and the MIME encoding method are explained. CGI code to process form data and handle search queries is discussed. CGI program security issues and CGI interfaces to UNIX systems are also discussed. Chapter 7. CGI scripts can be written in Perl, BASIC, and NetBasic. This chapter begins a discussion on each of the languages by providing a tutorial on Perl, which is presented in sufficient depth for you to begin writing sophisticated CGI scripts. Chapter 8. This chapter presents an in-depth tutorial on the BASIC and NetBasic languages. Chapter 9. This chapter discusses the elements of the Java language for use in the Novell Web Server environment, and presents examples of how to use Java to provide dynamic content. Chapter 10. This chapter discusses the use of Server Side Includes (SSIs) to provide dynamic content. Chapter 11. This chapter discusses details of integrating the Novell Web Server with Novell Directory Services (NDS). Chapter 12. This chapter discusses the details of installing and configuring NetWare/IP and the Domain Name System (DNS) services. Chapter 13. This chapter discusses the details of installing and configuring Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services. Chapter 14. This chapter discusses the details of installing and configuring file-transfer protocol (FTP) services. All the examples in the book are included in the CD-ROM that accompanies this book. This CD-ROM also contains a Win32 version of Perl for practice in writing Perl CGI scripts.

Nietzsche and Metaphor
Free Download Nietzsche and Metaphor By Sarah Kofman
2000 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0485114224 | PDF | 19 MB
This book addresses the question of metaphor in Nietzsche. It provides an unusual reading of Nietzsche's ideas (particularly of the central concept of "will to power") and an incisive method for investigating his style. Developing work on Nietzsche undertaken by Derrida and the post-structuralists, Kofman shows how Nietzsche's style influences his ideas and how these ideas are to be understood. Since its first publication in France in 1972, this work has been a major influence on readings of Nietzsche and this English-language translation should be widely welcomed. Sarah Kofman's translated works include "The Enigma of Women: Women in Freud's Writings" (1985), "The Childhood of Art" (1988) and "Freud and Fiction" (1991).
