Operatic Migrations Transforming Works and Crossing Boundaries
Free Download Operatic Migrations: Transforming Works and Crossing Boundaries By Roberta Montemorra Marvin (editor), Downing A. Thomas (editor)
2006 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0754650987 | PDF | 6 MB
This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying a wide range of subjects associated with the creation, performance and reception of 'opera' in varying social and historical contexts from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Each essay addresses migrations between genres, cultures, literary and musical works, modes of expression, media of presentation and aesthetics. Although the directions the contributions take are diverse, they converge in significant ways, particularly with the rebuttal of the notion of the singular nature of the operatic work. The volume strongly asserts that works are meaningfully transformed by the manifold circumstances of their creation and reception, and that these circumstances have an impact on the life of those works in their many transformations and on a given audience's experience of them. Topics covered include transformations of literary sources and their migration into the operatic genre; works that move across geographical and social boundaries into different cultural contexts; movements between media and/or genre as well as alterations through interpretation and performance of the composer's creation; the translation of spoken theatre to lyric theatre; the theoretical issues contingent on the rendering of 'speech' into 'song'; and the transforming effects of aesthetic considerations as they bear on opera. Crossing over disciplinary boundaries between music, literary studies, history, cultural studies and art history, the volume enriches our knowledge and understanding of the operatic experience and the works. The book will therefore appeal to those working in the field of music, literary and cultural studies, and to those with a particular interest in opera and musical theatre.

New Export China Translations across Time and Place in Contemporary Chinese Porcelain Art
Free Download Alex Burchmore, "New Export China: Translations across Time and Place in Contemporary Chinese Porcelain Art"
English | ISBN: 0520390016 | 2023 | 280 pages | PDF | 14 MB
Why do so many contemporary Chinese artists use porcelain in their work? In New Export China, Alex Burchmore presents a deep dive into a unique genre of ceramic art to describe a framework for a broader art practice. Focusing on the work of four artists from the 1990s through the 2010s-Liu Jianhua, Ai Weiwei, Ah Xian, and Sin-ying Ho-Burchmore reveals how the materiality of ceramics has been used to highlight China's role in global trade and to explore the function of this medium as a vessel for the transmission of Chinese art, culture, and ideas.

Neoliberal Development in Bangladesh People on the Margins
Free Download Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, "Neoliberal Development in Bangladesh: People on the Margins"
English | ISBN: 9845062660 | 2019 | 374 pages | PDF | 73 MB
This book is a collection of eleven critical essays covering some of the implications of neoliberal development in Bangladesh. One of the major themes of this book is how the paradigm of neoliberalism, with its sole focus on free market, has transformed the very nature of the state. For the neoliberal states, market is both the ends and means of social wellbeing. While this 'market-directed' development approach can ensure certain levels of economic growth, it also brings out degrading quality of life, ecology and political governance. Bangladesh's experience with neoliberal development is an important case study because the country has already been recognized as a 'development paradox'. While some hail the development spree and bask in the glory of a fast-growing economy, critics of the traditional economic growth-oriented model of development point their fingers at the downsides of the same economy. The topics discussed in this book, among others, include microfinance, energy, higher education, agriculture, gender and, corruption. The editors hope that this book will serve as a useful guide and resource for understanding contemporary critical scholarship on neoliberal policies in Bangladesh.

Nationalism before the Nation State Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self–Definition (1756–1871)
Free Download Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756-1871) By Dagmar Paulus, Ellen Pilsworth
2020 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 9004366830 | PDF | 4 MB
Long before it took political shape in the proclamation of the German Empire of 1871, a German nation-state had taken shape in the cultural imagination. Covering the period from the Seven Years' War to the Reichsgründung of 1871, Nationalism before the Nation State: Literary Constructions of Inclusion, Exclusion, and Self-Definition (1756-1871) explores how the nation was imagined by different groups, at different times, and in connection with other ideologies. Between them the eight chapters in this volume explore the connections between religion, nationalism and patriotism, and individual chapters show how marginalised voices such as women and Jews contributed to discourses on national identity. Finally, the chapters also consider the role of memory in constructing ideas of nationhood.

Multilayer Corpus Studies
Free Download Multilayer Corpus Studies By Amir Zeldes
2018 | 284 Pages | ISBN: 1138082538 | PDF | 9 MB
This volume explores the opportunities afforded by the construction and evaluation of multilayer corpora, an emerging methodology within corpus linguistics that brings about multiple independent parallel analyses of the same linguistic phenomena, and how the interplay of these concurrent analyses can help to push the field into new frontiers. The first part of the book surveys the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of multilayer corpus work, including an exploration of various technical and data collection issues. The second part builds on the groundwork of the first half to show multilayer corpora applied to different subfields of linguistic study, including information structure research, referentiality, discourse models, and functional theories of discourse analysis, synthesizing these different discussions in a detailed case study of non-standard language in its concluding chapter. Advancing the multilayer corpus linguistic research paradigm into new and different directions, this volume is an indispensable resource for graduate students and researchers in corpus linguistics, syntax, semantics, construction studies, and cognitive grammar.

Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty
Free Download Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032196416 | 388 Pages | PDF (True) | 6.4 MB
The book comprises original articles on topical issues of risk theory, rational decision making, statistical decisions, and control of stochastic systems. The articles are the outcome of a series international projects involving the leading scholars in the field of modern stochastic optimization and decision making. The structure of stochastic optimization solvers is described. The solvers in general implement stochastic quasi-gradient methods for optimization and identification of complex nonlinear models. These models constitute an important methodology for finding optimal decisions under risk and uncertainty. While a large part of current approaches towards optimization under uncertainty stems from linear programming (LP) and often results in large LPs of special structure, stochastic quasi-gradient methods confront nonlinearities directly without need of linearization. This makes them an appropriate tool for solving complex nonlinear problems, concurrent optimization and simulation models, and equilibrium situations of different types, for instance, Nash or Stackelberg equilibrium situations. The solver finds the equilibrium solution when the optimization model describes the system with several actors. The solver is parallelizable, performing several simulation threads in parallel. It is capable of solving stochastic optimization problems, finding stochastic Nash equilibria, and of composite stochastic bilevel problems where each level may require the solution of stochastic optimization problem or finding Nash equilibrium. Several complex examples with applications to water resources management, energy markets, pricing of services on social networks are provided. In the case of power system, regulator makes decision on the final expansion plan, considering the strategic behavior of regulated companies and coordinating the interests of different economic entities. Such a plan can be an equilibrium − a planned decision where a company cannot increase its expected gain unilaterally.
