Wisdom in Classical and Biblical Tradition
Free Download Michael C. Legaspi, "Wisdom in Classical and Biblical Tradition"
English | ISBN: 0190885122 | 2018 | 328 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Wisdom in Classical and Biblical Tradition begins with the recognition that modern culture emerged from a synthesis of the legacies of ancient Greek civilization and the theological perspectives of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Part of what made this synthesis possible was a shared outlook: a common aspiration toward wholeness of understanding that refused to separate knowledge from goodness, virtue from happiness,

Which Koran Variants, Manuscripts, Linguistics
Free Download Ibn Warraq, "Which Koran?: Variants, Manuscripts, Linguistics"
English | ISBN: 1591024293 | 2009 | 631 pages | PDF | 29 MB
For many millions of Muslims there is one and only one true Koran that offers the word of Allah to the faithful. Few Muslims realize, however, that there are several Korans in circulation in the Islamic world, with textual variations whose significance, extent, and meaning have never been properly examined. The author of Virgins? What Virgins? and Why I Am Not a Muslim has here assembled important scholarly articles that address the history, linguistics, and religious implications of these significant variants in Islam's sacred book, which call into question the claim of its status as the divinely revealed and inerrant word of the Muslim god. This work includes valuable charts that list the many textual variants found in Korans available in the Islamic world, along with remarks on their significance.

When Misfortune Becomes Injustice Evolving Human Rights Struggles for Health and Social Equality, Second Edition Ed 2
Free Download Alicia Ely Yamin, "When Misfortune Becomes Injustice: Evolving Human Rights Struggles for Health and Social Equality, Second Edition Ed 2"
English | ISBN: 1503633055 | 2023 | 326 pages | PDF | 2 MB
When Misfortune Becomes Injustice surveys the progress and challenges in deploying human rights to advance health and social equality over recent decades. Alicia Ely Yamin weaves together theory and firsthand experience in a compelling narrative of how evolving legal norms, empirical knowledge, and development paradigms have interacted in the realization of health rights, and challenges us to consider why these advances have failed to produce greater equality within and between nations. In this revised and expanded second edition, Yamin incorporates crucial lessons learned about the state of global health equity and public health systems during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating just how incompatible the current institutionalized world order-based on neoliberal, financialized capitalism-is with one in which the rights of diverse people around the globe can be realized. COVID-19 struck a world that had been shaped by decades of disinvestment in public health, health systems, and social protection, as well as privatization of wealth and gaping social inequalities within and between countries, and the evident crisis of confidence in the capacity of democratic political institutions and global governance was deepened by the pandemic. Yamin argues that transformative human rights praxis in health calls for addressing issues of structural inequality and political economy, and working across disciplinary silos through networks and social movements.

Visions of Nature How Landscape Photography Shaped Settler Colonialism
Free Download Dr. Jarrod Hore, "Visions of Nature: How Landscape Photography Shaped Settler Colonialism"
English | ISBN: 0520381254 | 2022 | 352 pages | PDF | 71 MB
Visions of Nature revives the work of late nineteenth-century landscape photographers who shaped the environmental attitudes of settlers in the colonies of the Tasman World and in California. Despite having little association with one another, these photographers developed remarkably similar visions of nature. They rode a wave of interest in wilderness imagery and made pictures that were hung in settler drawing rooms, perused in albums, projected in theaters, and re-created on vacations. In both the American West and the Tasman World, landscape photography fed into settler belonging and produced new ways of thinking about territory and history. During this key period of settler revolution, a generation of photographers came to associate "nature" with remoteness, antiquity, and emptiness, a perspective that disguised the realities of Indigenous presence and reinforced colonial fantasies of environmental abundance. This book lifts the work of these photographers out of their provincial contexts and repositions it within a new comparative frame.

Victorian Women Writers and the Other Germany Cross–Cultural Freedoms and Female Opportunity
Free Download Linda Hughes, "Victorian Women Writers and the Other Germany: Cross-Cultural Freedoms and Female Opportunity "
English | ISBN: 1316512843 | 2022 | 285 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Shedding new light on the alternative, emancipatory Germany discovered and written about by progressive women writers during the long nineteenth century, this illuminating study uncovers a country that offered a degree of freedom and intellectual agency unheard of in England. Opening with the striking account of Anna Jameson and her friendship with Ottilie von Goethe, Linda K. Hughes shows how cultural differences spurred ten writers' advocacy of progressive ideas and provided fresh materials for publishing careers. Alongside well-known writers - Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, Michael Field, Elizabeth von Arnim, and Vernon Lee - this study sheds light on the lesser-known writers Mary and Anna Mary Howitt, Jessie Fothergill, and the important Anglo-Jewish lesbian writer Amy Levy. Armed with their knowledge of the German language, each of these women championed an extraordinarily productive openness to cultural exchange and, by approaching Germany through a female lens, imported an alternative, 'other' Germany into English letters.

Variations on the Body
Free Download Michel Serres, "Variations on the Body "
English | ISBN: 1937561062 | 2012 | 152 pages | PDF | 512 KB
World-renowned philosopher, Michel Serres writes a text in praise of the body and movement, in praise of teachers of physical education, coaches, mountain guides, athletes, dancers, mimes, clowns, artisans, and artists. This work describes the variations, the admirable metamorphoses that the body can accomplish. While animals lack such a variety of gestures, postures, and movements, the fluidity of the human body mimics the leisure of living beings and things; what's more, it creates signs. Already here, within its movements and metamorphoses, the mind is born. The five senses are not the only source of knowledge: it emerges, in large part, from the imitations the plasticity of the body allows. In it, with it, by it knowledge begins.
