Between War and the State Civil Society in South Vietnam, 1954–1975
Free Download Van Nguyen-Marshall, "Between War and the State: Civil Society in South Vietnam, 1954-1975"
English | ISBN: 1501770578 | 2023 | 240 pages | PDF | 6 MB
In Between War and the State, Van Nguyen-Marshall examines an array of voluntary activities, including mutual-help, professional, charitable, community development, student, women's, and rights organizations active in South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. By bringing focus to the public lives of South Vietnamese people, Between War and the State challenges persistent stereotypes of South Vietnam as a place without society or agency. Such robust associational life underscores how an active civil society survived despite difficulties imposed by the war, government restrictions, economic hardship, and external political forces. These competing political forces, which included the United States, Western aid agencies, and Vietnamese communist agents, created a highly competitive arena wherein the South Vietnamese state did not have a monopoly on persuasive or coercive power. To maintain its influence, the state sometimes needed to accommodate groups and limit its use of violence. Civil society participants in South Vietnam leveraged their social connections, made alliances, appealed to the domestic and international public, and used street protests to voice their concerns, secure their interests, and carry out their activities.

Augustine's Text of John Patristic Citations and Latin Gospel Manuscripts
Free Download Hugh Houghton, "Augustine's Text of John: Patristic Citations and Latin Gospel Manuscripts "
English | ISBN: 0199545928 | 2008 | 336 pages | EPUB | 17 MB
What sort of Bible did Augustine have? How did he quote from it - and was he accurate? Do Augustine's biblical citations transmit readings not found in any surviving manuscripts? This book is part of a major project on the Old Latin versions of the Gospel according to John, and uses Augustine as a test-case to examine the importance of the evidence provided by the Church Fathers for the text of the Gospels. The early history of the Latin Bible is reconstructed from Augustine's comments in his treatise

Art + Archive Understanding the archival turn in contemporary art
Free Download Sara Callahan, "Art + Archive: Understanding the archival turn in contemporary art "
English | ISBN: 1526156857 | 2022 | 348 pages | PDF | 12 MB
Art + Archive provides an in-depth analysis of the connection between art and the archive at the turn of the twenty-first century. The book examines how the archive emerged in art writing in the mid-1990s and how its subsequent ubiquity can be understood in light of wider social, technological, philosophical and art-historical conditions and concerns. Deftly combining writing on archives from different disciplines with artistic practices, the book clarifies the function and meaning of one of the most persistent artworld buzzwords of recent years, shedding light on the conceptual and historical implications of the so-called archival turn in contemporary art.

Antimonarchic Discourse in Antiquity
Free Download Henning Borm, "Antimonarchic Discourse in Antiquity "
English | ISBN: 351511095X | 2015 | 352 pages | PDF | 2 MB
When analyzing the character of monarchic regimes and their strategies for creating obedience and acceptance, the focus usually lies on the ruler ideology and the self-representation of the individual monarch. However, the contributions to the present volume try to approach the matter from the angle of the - real or merely anticipated - criticism against the background of which monarchic legitimization was expressed: what conditions, what elements, and what strategies were characteristic of a critical discussion of monocracy in antiquity, and to what extent was the relationship between ruler ideology and antimonarchic sentiment marked by mutual dependence? What significance did the eternal background noise possess which as a "contre-discourse" compelled rulers in Egypt, Persia, Judea, Greece and Rome to justify themselves again and again?

Anna Kavan Mid–Century Experimental Fiction
Free Download Victoria Walker, "Anna Kavan: Mid-Century Experimental Fiction"
English | ISBN: 1474478948 | 2023 | 176 pages | PDF | 460 KB
This first book-length study of Anna Kavan's writing contradicts earlier critical approaches that have figured her writing as sui generis by reading her comparatively alongside her contemporaries, especially Jean Rhys, Elizabeth Bowen, Muriel Spark and Doris Lessing. Taking Kavan's fiction as pivotal to understanding trends of experimentalism that emerged across the middle of the twentieth century, it offers close readings of her distinctive prose including her early Helen Ferguson texts, her writing of asylum incarceration, her wartime stories, and her postwar novels. Observing how her fiction challenges perceived divisions between experimental and realist writing, literary and popular genre and (late) modernist and postwar literatures, it focuses on the ways that Kavan's writing undermines fixed or knowable identity and explores the relationship between reality and fiction. This study not only brings necessary attention to a neglected writer, but also suggests new taxonomies for reading experimental fiction in the mid-twentieth century.

A Is for Arson A History of Vandalism in American Education
Free Download Campbell F. Scribner, "A Is for Arson: A History of Vandalism in American Education "
English | ISBN: 1501770721 | 2023 | 240 pages | PDF | 7 MB
In A Is for Arson, Campbell F. Scribner sifts through two centuries of debris to uncover the conditions that have prompted school vandalism and to explain why attempts at prevention have inevitably failed. Vandalism costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars every year, as students, parents, and even teachers wreak havoc on school buildings. Why do they do it? Can anything stop them? Who should pay for the damage? Underlying these questions are long-standing tensions between freedom and authority, and between wantonness and reason.
