Korean Comfort Women Military Brothels, Brutality, and the Redress Movement
Free Download Pyong Gap Min, "Korean "Comfort Women": Military Brothels, Brutality, and the Redress Movement "
English | ISBN: 1978814976 | 2021 | 324 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Arguably the most brutal crime committed by the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific war was the forced mobilization of 50,000 to 200,000 Asian women to military brothels to sexually serve Japanese soldiers. The majority of these women died, unable to survive the ordeal. Those survivors who came back home kept silent about their brutal experiences for about fifty years. In the late 1980s, the women's movement in South Korea helped start the redress movement for the victims, encouraging many survivors to come forward to tell what happened to them. With these testimonies, the redress movement gained strong support from the UN, the United States, and other Western countries.

Jerome's Commentaries on the Pauline Epistles and the Architecture of Exegetical Authority
Free Download Andrew Cain, "Jerome's Commentaries on the Pauline Epistles and the Architecture of Exegetical Authority "
English | ISBN: 0192847198 | 2022 | 304 pages | EPUB, PDF | 816 KB + 2 MB
In the late fourth and early fifth centuries, during a fifty-year stretch sometimes dubbed a Pauline "renaissance" of the western church, six different authors produced over four dozen commentaries in Latin on Paul's epistles. Among them was Jerome, who commented on four epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Titus, Philemon) in 386 after recently having relocated to Bethlehem from Rome. His commentaries occupy a time-honored place in the centuries-long tradition of Latin-language commenting on Paul's writings. They also constitute his first foray into the systematic exposition of whole biblical books (and his only experiment with Pauline interpretation on this scale), and so they provide precious insight into his intellectual development at a critical stage of his early career before he would go on to become the most prolific biblical scholar of Late Antiquity.

Incomplete Conquests The Limits of Spanish Empire in the Seventeenth–Century Philippines
Free Download Stephanie Joy Mawson, "Incomplete Conquests: The Limits of Spanish Empire in the Seventeenth-Century Philippines"
English | ISBN: 1501770268 | 2023 | 294 pages | PDF | 10 MB
In Incomplete Conquests, Stephanie Joy Mawson uncovers the limitations of Spanish empire in the Philippines, unearthing histories of resistance, flight, evasion, conflict, and warfare from across the breadth of the Philippine archipelago during the seventeenth century. The Spanish colonization of the Philippines that began in 1565 has long been seen as heralding a new era of globalization, drawing together a multiethnic world of merchants, soldiers, sailors, and missionaries. Colonists sent reports back to Madrid boasting of the extraordinary number of souls converted to Christianity and the number of people paying tribute to the Spanish Crown. Such claims constructed an imagined imperial sovereignty and were not accompanied by effective consolidation of colonial control in many of the regions where conversion and tribute collection were imposed.

Incarceration and Older Women Giving Back Not Giving Up
Free Download Regina Benedict, "Incarceration and Older Women: Giving Back Not Giving Up"
English | ISBN: 1529231612 | 2023 | 142 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Generativity or 'giving back' is regarded as a common life stage, occurring for many around middle age. For the first time, this book offers qualitative research on the lives and social relationships of older imprisoned women. In-depth interviews with 29 female prisoners in the south-eastern United States show that older women both engage in generative behaviours in prison and also wish to do so upon their release. As prisoners continue to age, the US finds itself at a crossroads on prison reform, with potential decarceration beginning with older prisoners. The COVID-19 pandemic has led many to consider how to thrive under difficult circumstances and in stressing the resilience of older incarcerated women, this book envisions what this could look like.

If Cars Could Walk Postsocialist Streets in Transformation
Free Download Ger Duijzings, "If Cars Could Walk: Postsocialist Streets in Transformation "
English | ISBN: 1805390317 | 2023 | 272 pages | PDF | 6 MB
In the last twenty-five years, the explosive rise of car mobility has transformed street life in postsocialist cities. Whereas previously the social fabric of these cities ran on socialist modes of mobility, they are now overtaken by a culture of privately owned cars. If Cars Could Walk uses ethnographic cases studies documenting these changes in terms of street interaction, vehicles used, and the parameters of speed, maneuverability, and cultural and symbolic values. The altered reality of people's movements, replacing public transport, bicycles and other former 'socialist' modes of mobility with privatized mobility reflect an evolving political and cultural imagination, which in turn shapes their current political reality.

How Britain Loves the NHS Practices of Care and Contestation
Free Download Ellen A. Stewart, "How Britain Loves the NHS: Practices of Care and Contestation"
English | ISBN: 1447368878 | 2023 | 170 pages | PDF | 14 MB
EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. What does it mean to love a healthcare system? It is often claimed that the UK population is unusually attached to its National Health Service, and the last decade has seen increasingly visible displays of gratitude and love. While social surveys of public attitudes measure how much Britain loves the NHS, this book mobilises new empirical research to ask how Britain loves its NHS. The answer delves into a series of public practices - such as campaigning, donating and volunteering within NHS organisations - and investigates how attitudes to the NHS shape patient experience of healthcare. Stewart argues that these should be understood as practices of care for, and contestation about the future of, the healthcare system. This book offers a timely critique of both the potential, and the dysfunctions, of Britain's complex love affair with the NHS.

Health in a Post–COVID World Lessons from the Crisis of Western Liberalism
Free Download Sebastian Taylor, "Health in a Post-COVID World: Lessons from the Crisis of Western Liberalism"
English | ISBN: 1447368363 | 2023 | 386 pages | PDF | 34 MB
What part do the values of growth and prosperity, freedom and justice, security and democracy play in social policy and human welfare? How can we judge the validity of these - the founding principles of Western liberalism - and the policies they shape, as the recipe for progress? At a time of global 'permacrisis', Sebastian Taylor applies his extensive frontline experience working with health systems and healthcare in the Global North and South to assess the concrete impact of contemporary liberal values on our welfare, development and environmental survival. Drawing on research from around the world, he uses health as an objective metric to assess how effective these policies are for individuals and society as a whole.
