Explores the intersection of feminism, historical fiction, and modernism through the work of six writers who wrote historical novels set in ancient Greece or Rome: Naomi Mitchison, Mary Butts, Laura Riding, Phyllis Bentley Bryher, and Mary Renault."...Arguing that history provides a set of stories against which, and through which, human beings define ourselves, the author finds...Explores the intersection of feminism, historical fiction, and modernism through the work of six writers who wrote historical novels set in ancient Greece or Rome: Naomi Mitchison, Mary Butts, Laura Riding, Phyllis Bentley Bryher, and Mary Renault."...Arguing that history provides a set of stories against which, and through which, human beings define ourselves, the author finds in the historical fiction of six modern women writers a range of strategies for claiming their cultural heritage while simultaneously differentiating themselves, as women, from its masculinist understanding of the past.... The study makes a reader able to understand what modern women writers found as the appeal -- and indeed, the function for self-construction -- of historical fiction. Not only does this book open up the work of six relatively underappreciated and very interesting novelists, but it explores how their work both reflects, and uses, the fascination with things Roman and Greek at the turn of the twentieth century". -- Susan Squier, Brill Professor of English and Women's Studies, Pennslyvania State UniversityGendering Classicism explores the intersection of feminism, historical fiction, and modernism through the work of six writers, all of whom wrote historical novels set in ancient Greece or Rome: Naomi Mitchison, Mary Butts, Laura Riding, Phyllis Bentley, Bryher, and Mary Renault. As women gained access to higher education in the late-nineteenth century, they gained access also to the classical learning that had for so long demarcated and legitimated the British ruling classes. Steeped in misogyny, the classical tradition presented educated women with a massive project: the recasting of thattradition in terms that acknowledged the existence of women -- as historical agents and interpreters of the historical past.

From the Shtetl to the Lecture Hall Jewish Women and Cultural Exchange
Free Download From the Shtetl to the Lecture Hall: Jewish Women and Cultural Exchange By Luise Hirsch
2013 | 319 Pages | ISBN: 0761859926 | EPUB | 4 MB
Until the 19th century, women were regularly excluded from graduate education. When this convention changed, it was largely thanks to Jewish women from Russia. Raised to be strong and independent, the daughters of Jewish businesswomen were able to utilize this cultural capital to fight their way into the universities of Switzerland and Germany. They became trailblazers, ensuring regular admission for women who followed their example. This book tells the story of Russian and German Jews who became the first female professionals in modern history. It describes their childhoods--whether in Berlin or in a Russian shtetl--their schooling, and their experiences at German universities. A final chapter traces their careers as the first female professionals and details how they were tragically destroyed by the Nazis.

From Oikonomia to Political Economy Constructing Economic Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Scientific Revolution
Free Download From Oikonomia to Political Economy: Constructing Economic Knowledge from the Renaissance to the Scientific Revolution by Germano Maifreda
English | November 15, 2012 | ISBN: 1409433013, 1138108391 | True EPUB | 312 pages | 2 MB
Renaissance Europe witnessed a surge of interest in new scientific ideas and theories. Whilst the study of this 'Scientific Revolution' has dramatically shifted our appreciation of many facets of the early-modern world, remarkably little attention has been paid to its influence upon one key area; that of economics. Through an interrogation of the relationship between economic and scientific developments in early-modern Western Europe, this book demonstrates how a new economic epistemology appeared that was to have profound consequences both at the time, and for subsequent generations.

Forging Rights in a New Democracy Ukrainian Students Between Freedom and Justice
Free Download Forging Rights in a New Democracy: Ukrainian Students Between Freedom and Justice By Anna Fournier
2012 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0812244265 | PDF | 3 MB
The last two decades have been marked by momentous changes in forms of governance throughout the post-Soviet region. Ukraine's political system, like those of other formerly socialist states of Eastern Europe, has often been characterized as being "in transition," moving from a Soviet system to one more closely aligned with Western models. Anna Fournier challenges this view, investigating what is increasingly recognized as a critical aspect of contemporary global rights discourse: the active involvement of young people living in societies undergoing radical change. Fournier delineates a generation simultaneously embracing various ideological stances in an attempt to make sense of social conditions marked by the disjuncture between democratic ideals and the everyday realities of growing economic inequality.Based on extensive fieldwork in public and private schools in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, Forging Rights in a New Democracy explores high-school-aged students' understanding of rights and justice, and the ways they interpret and appropriate discourses of citizenship and civic values in the educational setting and beyond. Fournier's rich ethnographic account assesses the impact on the making of citizens of both formal and informal pedagogical practices, in schools and on the streets. Chronicling her subjects' encounters with state representatives and "violent entrepreneurs" as well as their involvement in peaceful protests alongside political activists, Fournier demonstrates the extent to which young people both reproduce and challenge the liberal discourse of rights in ways that illuminate the everyday paradoxes of market democracy. By tracking students' active participation in larger contests about the nature of liberty and entitlement in the context of redefined rights, her book provides insight into emergent configurations of citizenship in the New Europe.

Feminist Impact on the Arts and Sciences Series Classics and Feminism
Free Download Feminist Impact on the Arts and Sciences Series: Classics and Feminism By Lori McManus
1997 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0805797572 | PDF | 43 MB
Classics and Feminism is the first book-length study of the impact of modern feminism on the discipline and profession of classics in the United States. Combining a wide-ranging overview of historical and current developments with in-depth analysis and examples, the book has relevance for anyone interested in the role of feminism in the academy. Because the history of classics has been so deeply implicated in androcentric structures of knowledge and patriarchal social patterns, it illustrates with exceptional clarity many issues endemic to academic feminism as a whole. Barbara F. McManus provides an illuminating analysis of the complex gender performance demanded of academic women as "disembodied scholars." She defines and illustrates the distinctive aspects of a feminist approach to scholarship and argues that gender analysis is crucially important in traditionally masculine areas as well as in the study of women. She explains the theoretical and methodological principles developed by feminist classical scholars seeking to recover information about women from scanty and scattered evidence filtered through centuries of patriarchal interpretation. McManus envisions the relationship of feminism and classics as a complex chorus of many voices singing in counterpoint. She argues that feminism's impact on classics has been radical but not revolutionary, leading to a redirection of the discipline and a redefining of professional boundaries. The last chapter of the book presents many individual classicists from across the country who eloquently describe the way feminism has influenced their perceptions, teaching, and scholarship.
