Forging Rights in a New Democracy Ukrainian Students Between Freedom and Justice
Free Download Forging Rights in a New Democracy: Ukrainian Students Between Freedom and Justice By Anna Fournier
2012 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0812244265 | PDF | 3 MB
The last two decades have been marked by momentous changes in forms of governance throughout the post-Soviet region. Ukraine's political system, like those of other formerly socialist states of Eastern Europe, has often been characterized as being "in transition," moving from a Soviet system to one more closely aligned with Western models. Anna Fournier challenges this view, investigating what is increasingly recognized as a critical aspect of contemporary global rights discourse: the active involvement of young people living in societies undergoing radical change. Fournier delineates a generation simultaneously embracing various ideological stances in an attempt to make sense of social conditions marked by the disjuncture between democratic ideals and the everyday realities of growing economic inequality.Based on extensive fieldwork in public and private schools in the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, Forging Rights in a New Democracy explores high-school-aged students' understanding of rights and justice, and the ways they interpret and appropriate discourses of citizenship and civic values in the educational setting and beyond. Fournier's rich ethnographic account assesses the impact on the making of citizens of both formal and informal pedagogical practices, in schools and on the streets. Chronicling her subjects' encounters with state representatives and "violent entrepreneurs" as well as their involvement in peaceful protests alongside political activists, Fournier demonstrates the extent to which young people both reproduce and challenge the liberal discourse of rights in ways that illuminate the everyday paradoxes of market democracy. By tracking students' active participation in larger contests about the nature of liberty and entitlement in the context of redefined rights, her book provides insight into emergent configurations of citizenship in the New Europe.

Feminist Impact on the Arts and Sciences Series Classics and Feminism
Free Download Feminist Impact on the Arts and Sciences Series: Classics and Feminism By Lori McManus
1997 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0805797572 | PDF | 43 MB
Classics and Feminism is the first book-length study of the impact of modern feminism on the discipline and profession of classics in the United States. Combining a wide-ranging overview of historical and current developments with in-depth analysis and examples, the book has relevance for anyone interested in the role of feminism in the academy. Because the history of classics has been so deeply implicated in androcentric structures of knowledge and patriarchal social patterns, it illustrates with exceptional clarity many issues endemic to academic feminism as a whole. Barbara F. McManus provides an illuminating analysis of the complex gender performance demanded of academic women as "disembodied scholars." She defines and illustrates the distinctive aspects of a feminist approach to scholarship and argues that gender analysis is crucially important in traditionally masculine areas as well as in the study of women. She explains the theoretical and methodological principles developed by feminist classical scholars seeking to recover information about women from scanty and scattered evidence filtered through centuries of patriarchal interpretation. McManus envisions the relationship of feminism and classics as a complex chorus of many voices singing in counterpoint. She argues that feminism's impact on classics has been radical but not revolutionary, leading to a redirection of the discipline and a redefining of professional boundaries. The last chapter of the book presents many individual classicists from across the country who eloquently describe the way feminism has influenced their perceptions, teaching, and scholarship.

Everyday Occupations Experiencing Militarism in South Asia and the Middle East
Free Download Everyday Occupations: Experiencing Militarism in South Asia and the Middle East By Kamala Visweswaran
2013 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 0812244877 | PDF | 8 MB
In the twenty-first century, political conflict and militarization have come to constitute a global social condition rather than a political exception. Military occupation increasingly informs the politics of both democracies and dictatorships, capitalist and formerly socialist regimes, raising questions about its relationship to sovereignty and the nation-state form. Israel and India are two of the world's most powerful postwar democracies yet have long-standing military occupations. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey have passed through periods of military dictatorship, but democracy has yielded little for their ethnic minorities who have been incorporated into the electoral process. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh (like India, Pakistan, and Turkey) have felt the imprint of socialism; declarations of peace after long periods of conflict in these countries have not improved the conditions of their minority or indigenous peoples but rather have resulted in "violent peace" and remilitarization. Indeed, the existence of standing troops and ongoing state violence against peoples struggling for self-determination in these regions suggests the expanding and everyday nature of military occupation. Such everydayness raises larger issues about the dominant place of the military in society and the social values surrounding militarism.Everyday Occupations examines militarization from the standpoints of both occupier and occupied. With attention to gender, poetics, satire, and popular culture, contributors who have lived and worked in occupied areas in the Middle East and South Asia explore what kinds of society are foreclosed or made possible by militarism. The outcome is a powerful contribution to the ethnography of political violence.Contributors: Nosheen Ali, Kabita Chakma, Richard Falk, Sandya Hewamanne, Mohamad Junaid, Rhoda Kanaaneh, Hisyar Ozsoy, Cheran Rudhramoorthy, Serap Ruken Sengul, Kamala Visweswaran.

Early Modern Habsburg Women Transnational Contexts, Cultural Conflicts, Dynastic Continuities
Free Download Maria Galli Stampino, "Early Modern Habsburg Women: Transnational Contexts, Cultural Conflicts, Dynastic Continuities"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 1472411641 | EPUB | pages: 312 | 4.7 mb
As the first comprehensive volume devoted entirely to women of both the Spanish and Austrian Habsburg royal dynasties spanning the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, this interdisciplinary collection illuminates their complex and often contradictory political functions and their interrelations across early modern national borders. The essays in this volume investigate the lives of six Habsburg women who, as queens consort and queen regent, duchesses, a vicereine, and a nun, left an indelible mark on the diplomatic and cultural map of early modern Europe. Contributors examine the national and transnational impact of these notable women through their biographies, and explore how they transferred their cultural, religious, and political traditions as the women moved from one court to another. Early Modern Habsburg Women investigates the complex lives of Philip II's daughter, the Infanta Catalina Micaela (1567-1597); her daughter, Margherita of Savoy, Vicereine of Portugal (1589-1655); and Maria Maddalena of Austria, Grand Duchess of Florence (1589-1631). The second generation of Habsburg women that the volume addresses includes Philip IV's first wife, Isabel of Borbón (1602-1644), who became a Habsburg by marriage; Rudolph II's daughter, Sor Ana Dorotea (1611-1694), the only Habsburg nun in the collection; and Philip IV's second wife, Mariana of Austria (1634-1696), queen regent and mother to the last Spanish Habsburg. Through archival documents, pictorial and historical accounts, literature, and correspondence, as well as cultural artifacts such as paintings, jewelry, and garments, this volume brings to light the impact of Habsburg women in the broader historical, political, and cultural contexts. The essays fill a scholarly need by covering various phases of the lives of early modern royal women, who often struggled to sustain their family loyalty while at the service of a foreign court, even when protecting and preparing their heirs for rule a

The previous book by the author was an exposé on how the narrative of falsehood of Hindu terror was conceived and propagated in the country. An attempt has been made in this book - Deception, to capture the intrinsic working of the Government through the triumphs and tribulations of the central character - Kalyan. He exposes how critical information which is testified by intelligence agencies is also manipulated by the Government which is in pursuit of larger political conspiracy by blaming one ethnic group to placate the other ethnic group. Such acts, perpetuated only to appease the minorites and make them captive voters of this political formation.
