![]() Free Download The Art of Professing in Bourbon Mexico: Crowned-Nun Portraits and Reform in the Convent By Córdova, James M 2014 | 252 Pages | ISBN: 0292753152 | PDF | 48 MB In the eighteenth century, New Spaniards (colonial Mexicans) so lauded their nuns that they developed a local tradition of visually opulent portraits, called monjas coronadas or "crowned nuns," that picture their subjects in regal trappings at the moment of their religious profession and in death. This study identifies these portraits as markers of a vibrant and changing society that fused together indigenous and Euro-Christian traditions and ritual practices to construct a new and complex religious identity that was unique to New Spain. To discover why crowned-nun portraits, and especially the profession portrait, were in such demand in New Spain, this book offers a pioneering interpretation of these works as significant visual contributions to a local counter-colonial discourse. James M. Cordova demonstrates that the portraits were a response to the Spanish crown's project to modify and modernize colonial society--a series of reforms instituted by the Bourbon monarchs that threatened many nuns' religious identities in New Spain. His analysis of the portraits' rhetorical devices, which visually combined Euro-Christian and Mesoamerican notions of the sacred, shows how they promoted local religious and cultural values as well as client-patron relations, all of which were under scrutiny by the colonial Church. Combining visual evidence from images of the "crowned nun" with a discussion of the nuns' actual roles in society, Cordova reveals that nuns found their greatest agency as Christ's brides, a title through which they could, and did, challenge the Church's authority when they found it intolerable. ![]() Free Download T.E. Hulme and the Question of Modernism By Comentale, Edward P(Editor);Gasiorek, Andrzej(Editor) 2006 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 0754640884 | PDF | 2 MB Though only 34 years old at the time of his death in 1917, T.E. Hulme had already taken his place at the center of pre-war London's advanced intellectual circles. His work as poet, critic, philosopher, aesthetician, and political theorist helped define several major aesthetic and political movements, including imagism and Vorticism. Despite his influence, however, the man T.S. Eliot described as 'classical, reactionary, and revolutionary' has until very recently been neglected by scholars, and T.E. Hulme and the Question of Modernism is the first essay collection to offer an in-depth exploration of Hulme's thought. While each essay highlights a different aspect of Hulme's work on the overlapping discourses of aesthetics, politics, and philosophy, taken together they demonstrate a shared belief in Hulme's decisive importance to the emergence of modernism and to the many categories that still govern our thinking about it. In addition to the editors, contributors include Todd Avery, Rebecca Beasley, C.D. Blanton, Helen Carr, Paul Edwards, Jesse Matz, Alan Munton, and Andrew Thacker. ![]() Free Download T. S. Eliot: The Making of an American Poet, 1888-1922 By Jr, James E Miller 2005 | 468 Pages | ISBN: 0271026812 | PDF | 3 MB Late in his life T. S. Eliot, when asked if his poetry belonged in the tradition of American literature, replied: "I'd say that my poetry has obviously more in common with my distinguished contemporaries in America than with anything written in my generation in England. That I'm sure of. . . . In its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America." InT. S. Eliot: The Making of an American Poet,James Miller offers the first sustained account of Eliot's early years, showing that the emotional springs of his poetry did indeed come from America.Miller challenges long-held assumptions about Eliot's poetry and his life. Eliot himself always maintained that his poems were not based on personal experience, and thus should not be read as personal poems. But Miller convincingly combines a reading of the early work with careful analysis of surviving early correspondence, accounts from Eliot's friends and acquaintances, and new scholarship that delves into Eliot's Harvard years. Ultimately, Miller demonstrates that Eliot's poetry is filled with reflections of his personal experiences: his relationships with family, friends, and wives; his sexuality; his intellectual and social development; his influences.Publication ofT. S. Eliot: The Making of an American Poetmarks a milestone in Eliot scholarship. At last we have a balanced portrait of the poet and the man, one that takes seriously his American roots. In the process, we gain a fuller appreciation for some of the best-loved poetry of the twentieth century. ![]() Free Download Sweet Violence: The Idea Of The Tragic By Eagleton, Terry 2002 | 328 Pages | ISBN: 0631233598 | PDF | 2 MB Terry Eagleton'sTragedyprovides a major critical and analytical account of the concept of 'tragedy' from its origins in the Ancient world right down to the twenty-first century.A major new intellectual endeavour from one of the world's finest, and most controversial, cultural theorists.Provides an analytical account of the concept of 'tragedy' from its origins in the ancient world to the present day.Explores the idea of the 'tragic' across all genres of writing, as well as in philosophy, politics, religion and psychology, and throughout western culture.Considers the psychological, religious and socio-political implications and consequences of our fascination with the tragic. ![]() Free Download Azura Othman, "Sustainable Fiscal Position for Malaysia: A Proposal for Reform " English | ISBN: 3110587793 | 2021 | 200 pages | PDF | 1267 KB The financial crisis of the last decade has brought to the fore many discourses on the stability of the financial system under the current interest rate regime and whether issuing more debts, that create further divergence between the financial and real sector of the economy, is a sustainable solution to the ensuing debt crisis that followed. In such places the multitudinous voices of the spirits, deities, and other denizens of the other-than-human world continue to be heard, continue to be loved or feared or both, continue to accompany human beings in all their activities. In Subversive Spiritualities, Frederique Apffel-Marglin draws on a lifetime of work with the indigenous peoples of Peru and India to support her argument that the beliefs, values, and practices of such traditional peoples are ''eco-metaphysically true.'' In other words, they recognize that human beings are in communion with other beings in nature that have agency and are kinds of spiritual intelligences, with whom humans can be in relationship and communion.Ritual is the medium for communicating, reciprocating, creating and working with the other-than-humans, who daily remind the humans that the world is not for humans' exclusive use. Apffel-Marglin argues that when such relationships are appropriately robust, human lifeways are rich, rewarding and, in the contemporary jargon, environmentally sustainable. Her ultimate objective is to ''re-entangle'' humans in nature, by promoting a spirituality and ecology of belonging and connection to nature, and an appreciation of animistic perception and ecologies. Along the way she offers provocative and poignant critiques of many assumptions: of the ''development'' paradigm as benign (including feminist forms of development advocacy), of most anthropological and other social scientific understandings of indigenous religions, and of common views about peasant and indigenous agronomy. She concludes with a case study of the fair trade movement, illuminating both its shortcomings (how it echoes some of the assumptions in the development paradigms) and its promise as a way to rekindle community between humans as well as between humans and the other-than-human world. ![]() Free Download German A.
