The History of Scottish Theology, Volume II From the Early Enlightenment to the Late Victorian Era
Free Download The History of Scottish Theology, Volume II: From the Early Enlightenment to the Late Victorian Era By David Fergusson; Mark Elliott
2019 | 464 Pages | ISBN: 0198759347 | PDF | 35 MB
This three-volume work comprises over eighty essays surveying the history of Scottish theology from the early middle ages onwards. Written by an international team of scholars, the collection provides the most comprehensive review yet of the theological movements, figures, and themes that have shaped Scottish culture and exercised a significant influence in other parts of the world. Attention is given to different traditions and to the dispersion of Scottish theology through exile, migration, and missionary activity. The volumes present in diachronic perspective the theologies that have flourished in Scotland from early monasticism until the end of the twentieth century. The History of Scottish Theology, Volume I covers the period from the appearance of Christianity around the time of Columba to the era of Reformed Orthodoxy in the seventeenth century. Volume II begins with the early Enlightenment and concludes in late Victorian Scotland. Volume III explores the 'long twentieth century'. Recurrent themes and challenges are assessed, but also new currents and theological movements that arose through Renaissance humanism, Reformation teaching, federal theology, the Scottish Enlightenment, evangelicalism, missionary, Biblical criticism, idealist philosophy, dialectical theology, and existentialism. Chapters also consider the Scots Catholic colleges in Europe, Gaelic women writers, philosophical scepticism, the dialogue with science, and the reception of theology in liturgy, hymnody, art, literature, architecture, and stained glass. Contributors also discuss the treatment of theological themes in Scottish literature.

English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415017734, 0415867533 | EPUB | pages: 766 | 4.4 mb
Bethlem Hospital, popularly known as "Bedlam", is a unique institution. Now seven hundred and fifty years old, it has been continuously involved in the care of the mentally ill in London since at least the 1400s. As such it has a strong claim to be the oldest foundation in Europe with an unbroken history of sheltering and treating the mentally disturbed. During this time, Bethlem has transcended locality to become not only a national and international institution, but in many ways, a cultural and literary myth.

The Heritage of Talkeetna
Free Download Roberta Sheldon, "The Heritage of Talkeetna"
English | 2016 | ASIN: B001RD8SIK, B07ZFL4S85 | EPUB | pages: 219 | 4.5 mb
Heritage of Talkeetna focus is on the people. From its beginning, Talkeetna seems to have been a lure for people noted for their character, individualism, sense of independence, and humor. This pattern remains true today, and in a thoughtful sense might almost be identified as an ongoing legacy. Despite tough, often harsh lives certain people remained for many years, providing durable threads that strengthened and maintained the fabric of the village. These people, their perseverance, and the manner in which they conducted their lives, shaped the character of what has become Talkeetna's special heritage. The reader will find that a substantial amount of activity in these pages occurs in the Yentna River and Cache Creek areas, which contributed no small amount to Talkeetna's past. People that trapped, prospected and mined in those areas relied on Talkeetna as a supply and service point, but perhaps more importantly, Talkeetna relied on the trade these activities provided. It was a symbiotic relationship, inseparable from the story of Talkeetna.

The Grey Undercurrent Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa
Free Download Felix Schürmann, "The Grey Undercurrent: Whalers and Littoral Societies at the Deep Beaches of Africa "
English | ISBN: 3110759675 | 2023 | 380 pages | EPUB, PDF | 11 MB + 236 MB
By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa's west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.
