Green Infrastructure and Urban Climate Resilience An Introduction
Free Download Green Infrastructure and Urban Climate Resilience: An Introduction
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031370805 | 410 Pages | PDF (True) | 14 MB
This book aims to cover most subject areas of green infrastructure such as components, multi-functionality, and integration to build environment, contribution to urban sustainability, sustainable and smart city development, urban climate change nexus, green buildings and rating systems, economic assessment, and quantification of green infrastructure. The impending climate crisis, as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has highlighted the importance of green infrastructure in and around cities, prompting a call for more functional and sustainable urban planning and design. A number of recent studies have shown that green infrastructure provides a wide range of ecosystem functions and services critical to human well-being and urban sustainability, which is especially important during climatic and health crises. In this book, the authors emphasize the importance of existing green infrastructure in coping with climate change-induced stresses, such as increasing climate variability and extreme temperature and precipitation events, as well as contributing to urban dwellers' physical and mental health. Green infrastructure, in both cases, plays a significant role in providing urban areas with resilience capacity, which is critical to urban sustainability. The authors also emphasize the importance of expanding and improving green infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable areas, through integrative and participatory processes.

Gravitational Waves Explained (Mysteries of Space)
Free Download Gravitational Waves Explained (Mysteries of Space) by Richard Gaughan
English | December 30, 2018 | ISBN: 197850456X | 101 pages | PDF | 7.44 Mb
In September of 2015, the scientific world was buzzing: gravitational waves had been detected. It was a dramatic and conclusive demonstration of Einstein's theory of general relativity, the most complex and far-reaching theory in the history of physics. Through detailed diagrams, relatable analogies, and informative sidebars, this text cuts through the complexity and sophistication, providing an accessible introduction to the physics of waves, the implications of general relativity, and the ways in which gravitational waves can bring new understanding of the universe around us.

Graphic Trauma and Meaning in Our Online Lives
Free Download Graphic: Trauma and Meaning in Our Online Lives
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1316518213 | 161 Pages | PDF | 4.3 MB
Today, almost anyone can upload and disseminate newsworthy content online, which has radically transformed our information ecosystem. Yet this often leaves us exposed to content produced without ethical or professional guidelines. In Graphic, Alexa Koenig and Andrea Lampros examine this dynamic and share best practices for safely navigating our digital world. Drawing on the latest social science research, original interviews, and their experiences running the world's first university-based digital investigations lab, Koenig and Lampros provide practical tips for maximizing the benefits and minimizing the harms of being online. In the wake of the global pandemic, they ask: How are people processing graphic news as they spend more time online? What practices can newsrooms, social media companies, and social justice organizations put in place to protect their employees from vicarious trauma and other harms? Timely and urgent, Graphic helps us navigate the unprecedented psychological implications of the digital age.

Graph Spectra for Complex Networks (2nd Edition)
Free Download Graph Spectra for Complex Networks
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009366807 | 536 Pages | PDF | 10 MB
This concise and self-contained introduction builds up the spectral theory of graphs from scratch, with linear algebra and the theory of polynomials developed in the later parts. The book focuses on properties and bounds for the eigenvalues of the adjacency, Laplacian and effective resistance matrices of a graph. The goal of the book is to collect spectral properties that may help to understand the behavior or main characteristics of real-world networks. The chapter on spectra of complex networks illustrates how the theory may be applied to deduce insights into real-world networks. The second edition contains new chapters on topics in linear algebra and on the effective resistance matrix, and treats the pseudoinverse of the Laplacian. The latter two matrices and the Laplacian describe linear processes, such as the flow of current, on a graph. The concepts of spectral sparsification and graph neural networks are included.

Governing Human Life
Free Download Governing Human Life: (Bio)politics, Knowledge and Borders in Global Drug Policy
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031435516 | 174 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 2 MB
This book presents an analysis tracing the operation of biopolitical mode of power in the global field of drug control. Through a series of theoretically framed investigations that relate current drug control policies to the broader frame of 'vital politics,' it attends to the relationship of drug control, democracy and authoritarianism and showcases these pressures on the case of the evolution of drug policy in the Czech Republic. Then, it turns attention to the relationship of power and knowledge, with a particular focus on 'evidence-based' policy that tends to more often sustain, rather than challenge coercive and punitive drug control policies. Last but not least, it looks at how the global drug control dispositif shapes those lives on one of Europe's (internal) periphery, the Spanish Southern border. These investigations are intended to illuminate elements of the operation of the drug control dispositif and its far reaching (bio-)political effects in order to maintain and expand the space for thinking political alternatives.

Governance for a Sustainable Future
Free Download Governance for a Sustainable Future: The State of the Art in Japan
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9819947707 | 641 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 15 MB
Although the expression "responsibility to future generations" is firmly established in public and political vocabulary, its operational meaning and practice are inadequately understood and yet to be systematically evaluated. Moreover, the term has not been successfully translated into viable ethical and theoretical concepts that can guide public policies and actions. How can the modes of governance and established policy priorities become compatible with the well-being of future generations? The primary objective of this book is to identify the conditions of and obstacles to governance for a sustainable future, or future-regarding governance. Governance concerns steering a society over extended periods of time, not responding to particular policy issues. The ideas and strategies proposed by contributors in this book to establish future-regarding governance are based on the theoretical and empirical analyses of the major long-term problems facing advanced democracies in general, and Japan in particular. Japan is an interesting case indeed. Relatively poor climate policy, rapidly decreasing birth rate, aging population, extensive public debt, prolonged economic recession, healthcare and pension systems that urgently require redesigning, hollowing-out of industries and subsequent loss of jobs, deteriorating infrastructures, increasing nuclear waste, and intensifying social polarization have caused a decline in people's trust in the government and democratic processes. Currently, Japanese citizens are widely circulating their doubts about the social system's sustainability.
