Latinas in American Politics Changing and Embracing Political Tradition
Free Download Sharon A. Navarro, "Latinas in American Politics: Changing and Embracing Political Tradition "
English | ISBN: 1498533353 | 2016 | 278 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
The challenges that women face as political candidates can be compounded by race. In the case of Latinas, stereotypes as well as national media coverage and labeling of "Latino" issues potentially creates an electoral burden for Latina candidates at the local, state, and national level. The intersection of race and gender is complicated and often creates more questions than it answers. How are Latinas elected? Are they served by this complex identity or hindered by it? Latinas in American Politics: Embracing and Changing Political Tradition begins addressing the issues by examining the stereotypes Latinas face while running for political office. More specifically, the perception of voters on ideological standings of Latinas provides insight as to what party Latinas are identified with and how they can use this to their advantage. In addition to establishing the role stereotypes play in the electability of Latinas, the way they use and diffuse these stereotypes via campaigns is examined. The images that Latinas present and how they interact with voters via social media establishes a new dynamic in campaigning and allows for theory building in the area of race, gender, and campaigns. Aside from campaigning, party identification for a Latina creates a different barrier. How do Latinas bridge this? Case studies of prominent Latina officials are examined to understand within which contexts and under what conditions Latinas as candidates and as elected officials will experience intersectionality as advantage and disadvantage. Finally, the examination of Latina congressional members shows whether and how the intersection of gender and ethnicity in descriptive representation contributes uniquely to patterns of substantive representation. Ultimately, this volume demonstrates how the intersection of race and gender creates unique situations for representation and electability of candidates.

Free Download Raúl Sánchez Molina, "Latinas Crossing Borders and Building Communities in Greater Washington: Applying Anthropology in Multicultural Neighbor"
English | ISBN: 1498525326 | 2016 | 200 pages | EPUB | 10 MB
After crossing several borders, Latina/o immigrants and their children meet challenges of globalization as they acclimate to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Facing different social and cultural barriers while adapting to this metropolis, most of them meet these challenges by building transnational bridges that connect societies and cultures. These circumstances have offered opportunities for anthropologists and other scholars to work together with community residents in activities that have contributed to cultural knowledge and action. Latinas Crossing Borders and Building Communities in Greater Washington: Applying Anthropology in Multicultural Neighborhoods addresses how Latina/o immigrants use a variety of strategies to meet adaptation challenges. Drawing on ethnographic research and practices, contributors highlight how Latinas and Latinos are building community while reshaping ethnic, gender, and generational identities. They focus on models of collaboration and interaction in community centers, healthcare, the labor market, education, and faith-based communities.

Languaging Diversity Volume 3
Free Download Francesca Raffi Elena Di Giovanni, "Languaging Diversity Volume 3"
English | ISBN: 152750381X | 2017 | 273 pages | PDF | 1532 KB
Languages, diversity and power: these are the concepts running through all chapters in this volume. Rooted in linguistics, translation studies and literary studies, often informed by cultural and political studies, postcolonial theory and history, the contributions here tackle the thorny issue of power relations as expressed, enforced, dismissed through the use of language(s). From the British press, to power relations as represented in TV series set in courtrooms, and from language-power intersections in the translation of Italian post-war cinema to power enforcement through film-making in Africa, the volume spans decades and continents, providing in-depth analyses of a host of contexts, facts, actions. As such, it will be of particular interest to scholars and students in linguistics, translation and cultural studies.

Language in Contemporary African Cultures and Societies
Free Download Leonard Muaka, "Language in Contemporary African Cultures and Societies"
English | ISBN: 1498572278 | 2018 | 254 pages | EPUB | 503 KB
Language in Contemporary African Cultures and Societies examines language in contemporary Africa by positioning language at the center of interrelationships between individuals, society, and culture. Because of how language permeates every aspect of human existence within each society, this book has assembled contributions by researchers and scholars who focus on different topics within African languages and cultures. By presenting African languages as resources and subject and subject of the study, this book discusses Africa's multilingualism, language policy, preservation, and their uses in development, security, liberation, and identity formation in the diaspora. Based on empirical research and analysis of texts, this book takes a closer look at the continent and the diaspora by situating African languages, cultures, and literatures at the center, and shows how African languages are used in the liberation, transfer of knowledge, and promotion of literacy among Africans globally. It is a book that seeks to bridge the gap between the continent and the diaspora. All contributors are experienced scholars of language, literature, education and linguistics. The chapters provide a major means for examining the interplay of language, literature, and education.
