History and Speculative Fiction
Free Download History and Speculative Fiction by John L. Hennessey
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 (2024 Edition) | 295 Pages | ISBN : 3031422341 | 5.5 MB
This book demonstrates that despite different epistemological starting points, history and speculative fiction perform similar work in "making the strange familiar" and "making the familiar strange" by taking their readers on journeys through space and time. Excellent history, like excellent speculative fiction, should cause readers to reconsider crucial aspects of their society that they normally overlook or lead them to reflect on radically different forms of social organization. Drawing on Gunlög Fur's postcolonial concept of concurrences, and with contributions that explore diverse examples of speculative fiction and historical encounters using a variety of disciplinary approaches, this volume provides new perspectives on colonialism, ecological destruction, the nature of humanity, and how to envision a better future.

History and Literature of Byzantium in the 9th–10th Centuries
Free Download Athanasios Markopoulos, "History and Literature of Byzantium in the 9th-10th Centuries "
English | ISBN: 0860789381 | 2004 | 372 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
The studies reprinted here deal with the Byzantine empire between the 9th and 11th centuries, with a focus on the period of the Macedonian dynasty, and include four translated into English for this volume. They reflect both historical and prosopographical concerns, but Professor Markopoulos's principle interest is in the analysis of literary works and texts. This he combines with the examination of the ideological context of the period, as shaped in the reigns of Basil I and Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos, and the investigation of gender issues and other approaches. The close analysis of the texts shows how, after the close of Iconoclasm, new styles of writing and new attitudes towards the writing of history emerged, for instance in the use of mythological themes, which exemplify the changing intellectual concerns of the time.

High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells Approaches, Status, and Perspectives (2024)
Free Download High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells: Approaches, Status, and Perspectives by Qingfeng Li, David Aili, Hans Aage Hjuler, Jens Oluf Jensen
English | PDF (True) | 2016 | 561 Pages | ISBN : 3319170813 | 23.3 MB
This book is a comprehensive review of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). PEMFCs are the preferred fuel cells for a variety of applications such as automobiles, cogeneration of heat and power units, emergency power and portable electronics. The first 5 chapters of the book describe rationalization and illustration of approaches to high temperature PEM systems. Chapters 6 - 13 are devoted to fabrication, optimization and characterization of phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole membranes, the very first electrolyte system that has demonstrated the concept of and motivated extensive research activity in the field. The last 11 chapters summarize the state-of-the-art of technological development of high temperature-PEMFCs based on acid doped PBI membranes including catalysts, electrodes, MEAs, bipolar plates, modelling, stacking, diagnostics and applications.

High Above The untold story of Astra, Europe's leading satellite company
Free Download High Above: The untold story of Astra, Europe's leading satellite company by Chris Forrester
English | PDF (True) | 2011 | 243 Pages | ISBN : 3642120083 | 75.1 MB
Frequently it is suggested that the 'golden age' of television was during the period 1950-1960. It is true that television almost ruined Hollywood's fortunes during this period. But if this was the authentic golden age, then it was an age of black and white, somewhat limited creativity, poor reception, lack of competition (except in the United States) and - by and large - public service broadcasting. However, if we take 1950 as a generic 'starting point' for modern television broadcasting, then we talk about a kind of prehistoric stage of the medium - in which it remained for the best part of three decades. The younger days of broadcasting were the 1980s; the time when commercial television started on a large scale and, in this youth, was getting younger in terms of programming. Luxembourg-based SES Astra appeared on the scene at exactly this time. Astra was instrumental in the dramatic developments in television that we have witnessed since then. This is the story we want to tell in this book. Without satellite technology and the success of satellite reception, without the resulting mass-market penetration of television sets and general economic prosperity we would not have the necessary base ingredients to make the great leap forward into digital, into HDTV, 3D-television, and the prospects of Ultra High Definition now in sight.

English | ISBN: 1498512151 | 2018 | 264 pages | EPUB | 295 KB
This book is situated in the wider theoretical framework of civil and commercial law in the context of the tensions and conflicts arising between the Islamic law and western legal systems. The book deals with the genre of Mukhtaṣar in Islamic law and the significance of its emergence in the development and formation of Islamic law. These compositions of Mukhtaṣar are authored texts by individual jurists claiming independently to personal hermeneutical interpretations in producing and reproducing them. These compositions of Mukhtaṣar do not simply reproduce the legal rulings of eponyms of schools of law in an abridgement as traditionally it has been understood. Most importantly, the purpose for which they were composed was to provide hermeneutical accounts of the formation of Islamic law incorporating all essential expanded additional elements which have developed over the course of time. The authors of these compositions of Mukhtaṣar continue the hermeneutical formation of Islamic legal system.
