Democratization through Migration Political Remittances and Participation of Philippine Return Migrants
Free Download Christl Kessler, "Democratization through Migration?: Political Remittances and Participation of Philippine Return Migrants"
English | ISBN: 1498514219 | 2016 | 196 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
In migration research, studies on the influence of return migrants on the societies in their home countries are still few and predominantly concentrate on the economic dimension of migration. The literature on democratization has likewise paid only scant attention to the external factors that play a role in the transition of states in the process of becoming more democratic. Cognizant of these lacunae in research on migration and democratization, this book sets out to argue that return migrants can play an important role in the consolidation process of young democracies. The goal is therefore to explore the nature of this influence and to discuss its stabilizing as well as destabilizing aspects with regards to democratization. As a case study this book analyzes "labor exporter par excellence," the Philippines.

Democratic Governance in Northeast Asia A Human–Centered Approach to Evaluating Democracy (2024)
Free Download Brendan Howe, "Democratic Governance in Northeast Asia: A Human-Centered Approach to Evaluating Democracy (Security, Development and Human Rights in East Asia)"
English | 2015 | pages: 167 | ISBN: 1349558168, 1137550449 | PDF | 2,5 mb
Comprising case studies of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, this edited volume explores the key characteristics of democratic governance in Northeast Asia. Each democracy is assessed on the extent to which it enables the flourishing of social capital; prioritizes the interests of all as characterized by freedom from fear and want; and empowers all to participate in the democratic process and governance. With particular focus on the experience of minorities, this volume contends that the acid test of democratic governance is not how well the government represents the interests of the elites, or even the majority, but rather how it cares for the needs of vulnerable groups in society.

Deconstructing Global Citizenship Political, Cultural, and Ethical Perspectives
Free Download Hassan Bashir, "Deconstructing Global Citizenship: Political, Cultural, and Ethical Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 149850258X | 2015 | 342 pages | EPUB | 1209 KB
The success of individual nation states today is often measured in terms of their ability to benefit from and contribute to a host of global economic, political, socio-cultural, technological, and educational networks. This increased multifaceted international inter-dependence represents an intuitively contradictory and an immensely complex situation. This scenario requires that national governments, whose primary responsibility is towards their citizenry, must relinquish a degree of control over state borders to constantly developing trans and multinational regimes and institutions. Once state borders become permeable all sorts of issues related to rights earned or accrued due to membership of a national community come into question. Given that neither individuals nor states can eschew the influence of the growing interdependence, this new milieu is often described in terms of shrinking of the world into a global village. This reshaping of the world requires us to broaden our horizons and re-evaluate the manner in which we theorize human personhood within communal boundaries. It also demands us to acknowledge that the relative decline of Euro-American economic and political influence and the rise of Asian and Latin American states at the global level have created spaces in which a de-territorialized and a de-historicized notion of citizenship and state can now be explored. The essays in this volume represent diverse disciplinary, analytical, and methodological approaches to understand what the implications are of being a citizen of both a nation state and the world simultaneously. In sum, Deconstructing Global Citizenship explores the question of whether a synthesis of contradictory national and global tendencies in the term "global citizenship" is even possible, or if we are better served by fundamentally reconsidering our ideas of "citizenship," "community," and "politics."

Decolonial Mourning and the Caring Commons Migration–Coloniality Necropolitics and Conviviality Infrastructure
Free Download Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez, "Decolonial Mourning and the Caring Commons: Migration-Coloniality Necropolitics and Conviviality Infrastructure "
English | ISBN: 1839988770 | 2023 | 264 pages | EPUB/PDF | 1006 KB
This book is the product of an endless individual and collective process of mourning. It departs from the author's mourning for her parents, their histories and struggles in Germany as Gastarbeiter, while it also engages with the political mourning of intersectional feminist movements against feminicide inCentral and South America; the struggles against state and police misogynoir violence of #SayHerName in the United States; the resistance of refugees and migrantized people against the coloniality of migration in Germany; and the intense political grief work of families, relatives, and friends who lost their loved ones in racist attacks from the 1980s until today in Germany. Bearing witness to their stories and accounts, this book explores how mourning is shaped both by its historical context and the political labor of caring commons, while it also follows the building of a conviviality infrastructure of support against migration-coloniality necropolitics, dwelling toward transformative and reparative practices of common justice.
