Free Download Disease and Diagnosis: Value-Dependent Realism By William E. Stempsey S.J. (auth.) 2000 | 228 Pages | ISBN: 0792363221 | PDF | 7 MB The germs of the ideas in this book became implanted in me during my experience as a resident in clinical pathology at Boston University Medical Center. At the time, I had inklings that the test results churned out by our laboratories were more than scientific facts. As a philosophically unsophisticated young physician, however, I had no language or framework to analyze what I saw as a deep philosophical problem, a problem largely unrecognized by most physicians. The test results provided by our laboratories were accurate and of great practical importance for patient care. However, most of the physicians who relied on our test results to diagnose and treat their patients either did not have the time or interest to consider the philosophical issues inherent in diagnosis, or, like me, had inadequate means to further analyze them. It was more than ten years later that I began doctoral studies in philosophy, and I was fortunate to find a faculty that was supportive of my efforts to address the problem. This book began as my doctoral dissertation in the Department of Philosophy at Georgetown University. I would like to acknowledge the assistance of my mentor, Robert Veatch, Ph. D. Our conversations during my Georgetown years led me in new and often fascinating directions. I would also like to acknowledge the help of Kenneth Schaffner, M. D. , Ph. D. Free Download Directions and Prospects for Educational Linguistics By Constant Leung (auth.), Francis M. Hult (eds.) 2010 | 156 Pages | ISBN: 9048191351 | PDF | 3 MB "This anthology is a testament to the vitality of Educational Linguistics and its transdisciplinary, problem-posing approach. With chapters ranging from the ethnopoetics of oral narrative to the use of eye-tracking technology to study recasts in CMC, this collection extends the boundaries of educational linguistics in significant, interesting, and innovative ways. In so doing, it will inspire much conversation about where this growing field is heading in the decades to come."Professor Diane Larsen-Freeman, University of Michigan, USA"This edited collection provides us with a unique contribution as it demonstrates the applicability of a varied repertoire of innovative research methods to diverse language learning programs."Professor Elana Shohamy, Tel Aviv University, Israel"This exciting collection includes original analyses of communicative actions and interactions in multiple international and multimodal settings to illustrate the promise of educational linguistics. A must-read for all those curious about contemporary applied linguistic scholarship and its pedagogical relevance."Professor Mary McGroarty, Northern Arizona University, USA"Contributors to this volume have been in the vanguard of a bold, transdisciplinary movement that has re-tuned and reinvigorated the field of educational linguistics in ways that are uniquely suited to contemporary research on language in education. The chapters make challenging new research-theory-policy-practice connections and draw on cutting edge research-a compelling read for both new and established researchers."Professor Marilyn Martin-Jones, University of Birmingham, UK Free Download Direct and Large-eddy Simulation by Bernard J. Geurts English | July 15, 2022 | ISBN: 3110516217 | 312 pages | MOBI | 6.17 Mb The series is devoted to the publication of high-level monographs and specialized graduate texts which cover the modern mathematical foundations behind computational science and its applications in physical and life sciences, and in engineering. One of its main objectives is to make available to the professional community expositions of results and in-depth presentation of techniques that are of current importance to technological and practical applications. This authoritative book presents an overview of the mathematics behind the simulation of turbulent flows and discusses in detail the phenomenology of turbulence in fluid dynamics, direct and large-eddy simulations, subgrid modeling, and also covers validation and reliability issues. Free Download Digital Watermarking for Machine Learni by Lixin Fan, Chee Seng Chan, Qiang Yang English | February 28, 2023 | ISBN: 9811975531 | 233 pages | MOBI | 14 Mb Machine learning (ML) models, especially large pretrained deep learning (DL) models, are of high economic value and must be properly protected with regard to intellectual property rights (IPR). Model watermarking methods are proposed to embed watermarks into the target model, so that, in the event it is stolen, the model's owner can extract the pre-defined watermarks to assert ownership. Model watermarking methods adopt frequently used techniques like backdoor training, multi-task learning, decision boundary analysis etc. to generate secret conditions that constitute model watermarks or fingerprints only known to model owners. These methods have little or no effect on model performance, which makes them applicable to a wide variety of contexts. In terms of robustness, embedded watermarks must be robustly detectable against varying adversarial attacks that attempt to remove the watermarks. The efficacy of model watermarking methods is showcased in diverse applications including image classification, image generation, image captions, natural language processing and reinforcement learning.
