The Algerian War in Film Fifty Years Later, 2004–2012
Free Download Anne Donadey, "The Algerian War in Film Fifty Years Later, 2004-2012 "
English | ISBN: 1793626642 | 2020 | 246 pages | EPUB, PDF | 487 KB + 5 MB
The Algerian War in Film Fifty Years Later, 2004-2012 examines the cultural, political, and aesthetic significance of narrative films made during the fiftieth-anniversary period of the war, between 2004 and 2012. This period was a fruitful one, in which film became a central medium generating varied representations of the war, and Anne Donadey argues that the fiftieth-anniversary film production contributed to France's move from a period of the return of the repressed to one of difficult anamnesis. Donadey provides a close analysis of twenty narrative films made during this period on both side of the Mediterranean, observing that while some films continue to center on the point of view of only one stake-holding group, a number of films open up new opportunities for multicultural French audiences to envision the war through the eyes of Algerian characters on-screen, and other films bring memories from various groups together in thoughtful articulations that represent the complexity of the situation. Donadey takes this analysis a step further to analyze what types of gendered representations emerge in these films, given the important participation of Algerian women in the revolutionary war. Scholars of Francophone studies, film, women's studies, and history will find this book particularly useful.

Teaching Climate Change
Free Download Teaching Climate Change
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032278595 | 247 Pages | PDF (True) | 8 MB
The book sets out a radical vision for climate pedagogy, introducing an innovative framework in which the scientific essentials of climate change are scaffolded via three transdisciplinary meta-concepts: Balance/Imbalance, Critical Thresholds and Complex Interconnections. Author Vandana Singh grounds this theory in practice, drawing on examples from her own classroom to provide implementable ideas for educators, and to demonstrate how climate change can be taught from any disciplinary perspective in a transdisciplinary way. The book also explores the barriers to effective climate education at a macro level, focusing on issues such as climate misinformation/misconception, the exclusion of social and ethical concerns and a focus on technofixes. Singh uses this information to identify four key dimensions for an effective climate pedagogy, in which issues of justice are central: scientific-technological, the transdisciplinary, the epistemological and the psychosocial. This approach is broad and flexible enough to be adapted to different classrooms and contexts.

Taming Terrorism. It's Been Done Before
Free Download Taming Terrorism. It's Been Done Before By Anna Reid (ed.)
2005 | 122 Pages | ISBN: 0954752759 | PDF | 2 MB
Taming Terrorism: It's Been Done Before is the second in a series ofPolicy Exchange publications that seek to draw from past experiencein deciding how best to tackle foreign policy challenges today. Thefirst - Regime Change - looked at state-building efforts abroad, frompost-war Germany to contemporary Afghanistan. Taming Terrorismdoes the same with terrorist movements, from the Boxer Rebellionof 1899-1901 to Japan's Aum Shinriykõ and Greece's November 17thin the 1990s. Part of its point is to demonstrate that despite the hypetoday's struggle is not an unprecedented one, and in fact has muchin common with episodes in the not so distant past. We've beatenterrorism before, and we can do it again. As case studies, we picked groups which, like the Islamicradicals, were primarily driven by ideology rather than by concretepolitical demands, and whose aims were so extreme and/oreccentric as to preclude all possibility of rational negotiation.Hence separatists - such as the IRA, ETA and PKK - are excluded, as are single-issue groups such as anti-abortionists and anti-vivsectionists.

Suicidal Narrative in Modern Japan The Case of Dazai Osamu
Free Download Alan Stephen Wolfe, "Suicidal Narrative in Modern Japan: The Case of Dazai Osamu"
English | 1990 | pages: 280 | ISBN: 0691067740, 0691607834 | PDF | 14,7 mb
Dazai Osamu (1909-1948) is one of Japan's most famous literary suicides, known as the earliest postwar manifestation of the genuinely alienated writer in Japan. In this first deconstructive reading of a modern Japanese novelist, Alan Wolfe draws on contemporary Western literary and cultural theories and on a knowledge of Dazai's work in the context of Japanese literary history to provide a fresh view of major texts by this important literary figure. In the process, Wolfe revises Japanese as well as Western scholarship on Dazai and discovers new connections among suicide, autobiography, alienation, and modernization. As shown here, Dazai's writings resist narrative and historical closure; while he may be said to serve the Japanese literary establishment as both romantic decadent and representative scapegoat, his texts reveal a deconstructive edge through which his posthumous status as a monument of negativity is already perceived and undone. Wolfe maintains that cultural modernization pits a Western concept of the individual as realized self and coherent subject against an Eastern absent self-and that a felt need to overcome this tension inspires the autobiographical fiction so prevalent in Japanese novels. Suicidal Narrative in Modern Japan shows that Dazai's texts also resist readings that would resolve the gaps (East/West, self/other, modern/premodern) still prevalent in Japanese intellectual life.
