Conservation in Earthen Heritage
Free Download Mariana Correia, "Conservation in Earthen Heritage"
English | ISBN: 144388605X | 2016 | 468 pages | PDF | 10 MB
Worldwide, there is a vast but fragile earthen heritage that is barely surviving due to serious damage of the fabric. It is generally believed that natural agents are the overall cause for the decay of earthen heritage. However, when thoroughly evaluating, it can be observed that conservators interventions have a major impact, which leads to question current approaches to conservation and the reasons why intervention mistakes are repeated and why successful conservation results are still scarce. The research methodology of this investigation is based in a case study strategy analysing three World Heritage earthen sites, namely Chan Chan in Peru, Aït Ben Haddou in Morocco and Arg-e Bam in Iran. A combination of sources was also used, following a multi-method approach. This book suggests implementing standards for high quality intervention through the definition of criteria for decision-making and indicators of quality and best practice, as well as clarification concerning procedures in the methodology of intervention. It also stresses the importance of conservation theory in earthen heritage conservation, combining theory and practice. In addition, the book recommends an overall strategy in the conservation of earthen heritage, with particular emphasis on an approach that integrates education, awareness, research and preventive conservation.

Conflict, Identity, and Protest in American Art
Free Download Miguel de Baca, "Conflict, Identity, and Protest in American Art"
English | ISBN: 1443883751 | 2015 | 240 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Conflict, Identity, and Protest in American Art explores the powerful relationship between artistic production and cultures of conflict in the United States. Such a theme continues to provoke practitioners and scholars across a range of media and disciplines, especially as definitions of war and protest evolve and change in the twenty-first century. This anthology presents vital discussions of visual works in relationship to national identity, the politics and contexts of artistic production and reception, and the expressive and political function of art within historical periods defined by wars, rebellions, and revolutions. It sheds new light on the shifting nature of identity, and specifically how conflict armed conflict as well as rhetorical conflict inspires new identities to emerge. Conflict, Identity, and Protest in American Art will appeal to historians of American art and architecture, American studies, cultural studies, and material culture. Its vibrant discussions of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality represent the urgency of these topics in modern and contemporary art history. This book is suitable for academics at all levels, from undergraduates through to graduate students and faculty researchers, as well as artists and non-specialised readers.

Completing Humanity The International Law of Decolonization, 1960–82
Free Download Completing Humanity: The International Law of Decolonization, 1960-82
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1108427693 | 353 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
After the Second World War, the dissolution of European empires and emergence of 'new states' in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and elsewhere necessitated large-scale structural changes in international legal order. In Completing Humanity, Umut Özsu recounts the history of the struggle to transform international law during the twentieth century's last major wave of decolonization. Commencing in 1960, with the General Assembly's landmark decolonization resolution, and concluding in 1982, with the close of the third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and the onset of the Latin American debt crisis, the book examines the work of elite international lawyers from newly independent states alongside that of international law specialists from 'First World' and socialist states. A study in modifications to legal theory and doctrine over time, it documents and reassesses post-1945 decolonization from the standpoint of the 'Third World' and the jurists who elaborated and defended its interests.

Competition Policy and Resource Utilization
Free Download David Oluwadare Adetoro, "Competition Policy and Resource Utilization"
English | ISBN: 1443890413 | 2016 | 295 pages | PDF | 957 KB
This book examines the extent to which competition law and policy could be employed to promote the efficient allocation of resources in resource-dependent developing economies. Its background inquiry into competition policy and the analysis of economic problems of resource-dependent developing economies inspired by global competition trends in the United States and Europe provide an indispensable framework for understanding competition policy and current attitudes to regulation in a liberalised developing economy. The book provides a systematic exposition of some of the problems associated with resource-dependent economies and the implications for competition and what kinds of conduct in which firms can and cannot engage. In addition to building on basic competition and antitrust concepts, it offers insights into some prevailing problems, which include the issue of resource curse, rent-seeking, corruption, and abusive business practices, among others. Their examination here is aligned with scrutiny of the characteristics of developing countries in contrast to developed countries; Nigeria is taken as a proxy for resource-dependent developing countries. The book also determines whether competition law and policy could be used as a tool for addressing competition problems that may exist in resource-dependent developing countries. This book provides meaningful material for both undergraduate and graduate business school programs. In addition, it will be of great interest to lawyers, historians, economists, sociologists, and policy makers in both government and business who wish to understand competition issues in a clear and rigorous way in developing economies.
