A God More Powerful Than Yours American Evangelicals, Politics, and the Internet Age
Free Download Katie Donbavand Christopher W. Boerl, "A God More Powerful Than Yours: American Evangelicals, Politics, and the Internet Age"
English | ISBN: 144387437X | 2015 | 125 pages | PDF | 499 KB
Throughout American history, religious movements have repeatedly proved themselves to be powerful forces capable of masterfully manipulating the social and political landscape of the nation. Key to the influence religious organizations have historically held in the United States is their use of communication technologies. In this vivid account, Christopher Boerl and Katie Donbavand adroitly weave a rich narrative illuminating the effects various historical phenomena have had and the reactionary religious response which followed. Through shifting social norms and political realities, the authors also show the role media has played in nurturing religious movements and fanaticism. Broadcast media in particular is identified as a unique conduit through which the now dominant, conservative articulation of Christianity both took root in the United States and flourished as an imposing cultural standard. More recently, new communication technologies, such as the Internet and social media, have usurped the reign of broadcast media. In so doing, these technologies are serving as a form of religious pluralization and theological fragmentation. In short, new communications technologies are fragmenting a once homogenous religious body, and, in so doing, proving that some gods are more powerful than others.

A Deal They Can't Resist Adaptive Accumulation and American Public Policy
Free Download A Deal They Can't Resist: Adaptive Accumulation and American Public Policy by Rodney Loeppky
English | January 31, 2022 | ISBN: 3110761742 | 154 pages | MOBI | 0.56 Mb
This work argues that a component part of US neoliberalism involves adaptive accumulation, a process in which capital seeks to enlarge public programs, as a means to reroute public revenues into private revenue streams. Along the way, corporations project quasi-public aspirations as a central part of their commercial mission, as the state carves out new - or expands old - areas of accumulative growth for corporate America.

A Cultural Approach to Emotional Disorders Psychological and Aesthetic Interpretations
Free Download E. Deidre Pribram, "A Cultural Approach to Emotional Disorders: Psychological and Aesthetic Interpretations "
English | ISBN: 1138018295 | 2016 | 180 pages | PDF | 1027 KB
In her latest contribution to the growing field of emotion studies, Deidre Pribram makes a compelling argument for why culturalist approaches to the study of emotional "disorders" continue to be eschewed, even as the sociocultural and historical study of mental illness flourishes. The author ties this phenomenon to a tension between two fundamentally different approaches to emotion: an individualist approach, which regards emotions as the property of the individual, whether biologically or psychologically, and a culturalist approach, which regards emotions as collective, social processes with distinctive histories and meanings that work to produce particularized subjects. While she links a strong preference for the individualist construct in Western culture to the rise of the psychological and psychiatric disciplines at the turn of the twentieth century, Pribram also engages with a diverse set of case studies tied to psychological and aesthetic discourses on emotions. These range from Van Gogh's status as emotionally disordered to the public, emotional aesthetics of 19th century melodrama to the diagnostic categories of the DSMs and the fear of "globalizing" emotional disorders in the 21st century. This genuinely interdisciplinary approach makes for a text with potential application in a wide range of disciplines within cultural studies, including sociocultural and historical analysis of psychiatry and psychology, gender theory, subject and identity theory, popular culture studies, and history and theory of the arts.

A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam
Free Download Sabine Planka, "A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam "
English | ISBN: 1666912255 | 2022 | 264 pages | EPUB, PDF | 431 KB + 2 MB
A Critical Companion to Terry Gilliam provides a fresh, up-to-date exploration of the director's films and artistic practices, ranging from his first film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) to his recently released and latest film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018). This volume presents Gilliam as a director whose films weave together an avant-garde cinematic style, imaginative exaggeration, and social critique. Consequently, while his films can seem artistically chaotic and thus have the effect of frustrating and upsetting the viewer, the essays in this volume show that this is part of a very disciplined creative plan to achieve the defamiliarization of various accepted notions of human and social life.
