1997 | 691 Pages | ISBN: 9625930787 | PDF | 117 MB
The first volume provides a review of the geology, physical oceanography and meteorology of the archipelago. Coral reefs, one of the most important, yet least known ecosystems in Indonesia, are introduced in this volume through discussions of the geologic history of reefs, followed by a review of the major theories of coral reef formation, development and their world distribution. Corals and other reef-associated organisms are then examined. The chapter on foraminifera, major producers of the present and past carbonate deposits, presents some little-known Indonesian assemblages. Next, the authors look at the natural environmental factors that affect coral reef development and survival. A chapter on coral reef growth and development concludes the first volume.

The Early Imperial Republic From the American Revolution to the U.S.–Mexican War (Early American Studies)
Free Download The Early Imperial Republic: From the American Revolution to the U.S.-Mexican War (Early American Studies) by Michael A. Blaakman, Emily Conroy-Krutz, Noelani Arista
English | March 21, 2023 | ISBN: 0812252780 | 352 pages | MOBI | 7.21 Mb
Created in a world of empires, the United States was to be something new: an expansive republic proclaiming commitments to liberty and equality but eager to extend its territory and influence. Yet from the beginning, Native powers, free and enslaved Black people, and foreign subjects perceived, interacted with, and resisted the young republic as if it was merely another empire under the sun. Such perspectives have driven scholars to reevaluate the early United States, as the parameters of early American history have expanded in Atlantic, continental, and global directions. If the nation's acquisition of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands in 1898 traditionally marked its turn toward imperialism, new scholarship suggests the United States was an empire from the moment of its creation.

The Donkey, the Carrot, and the Club William C. Bullitt and Soviet–American Relations, 1917–1948
Free Download The Donkey, the Carrot, and the Club: William C. Bullitt and Soviet-American Relations, 1917-1948 By Michael Cassella-Blackburn
2004 | 287 Pages | ISBN: 0275968200 | PDF | 8 MB
This study focuses on the life of William C. Bullitt, perhaps the most charming, devious, and thoughtful person in Soviet-American relations in the interwar and early postwar years. Cassella-Blackburn introduces Bullitt as a young patrician who persistently pushed his views concerning Russia on the Wilson Administration. His thoughtfulness and persistence landed him the position as leader of a mission to the Bolsheviks in early 1919. He attempted to isolate the Bolsheviks within the Liberal world order while the Bolsheviks were weak.Fourteen years later, an older more politically suspect Bullitt clawed his way into the Roosevelt Administration where he could once again try to isolate the former Bolsheviks, now Soviet leadership. When it became obvious that the Soviets as Marxist-Leninists could never fit into such an order, Bullitt began a personal crusade to isolate and contain them. With the help of George F. Kennan, and many of those who would become the leadership in American efforts against the Soviet Union during the Cold War, Bullitt educated the American public that the Soviets were the true enemy to all that Americans held dear.

The Dismantling of India In 35 Portraits
Free Download TJS George, "The Dismantling of India: In 35 Portraits"
English | 2022 | ASIN: B0B75NTPJ9 | EPUB | pages: 374 | 8.6 mb
In October 1947, two months after Independence, TJS George arrived in Bombay. He was nineteen years old, with a degree in English Literature. He sent out job applications--to the Air Force and to the city's English-language newspapers. Only one organization cared to reply, The Free Press Journal. The editor was known to hire anyone who asked for a job, but most new hires were sacked in a fortnight. George was put on the news desk as a sub-editor and eventually became an assistant editor. In Patna, as editor of The Searchlight, he was arrested by the chief minister for sedition. He spent three weeks in Hazaribagh Central Jail. In Hong Kong, he worked for the Far Eastern Economic Review as regional editor; in New York he was a writer for the United Nations population division; and, back in Hong Kong, in 1975, he founded Asiaweek. Six years later, he returned to India and settled in Bangalore. He began a column for Indian Express that ran without a break for twenty-five years, until 2022. His seventy-five years of journalism, concurrent with India's development as an independent nation, make for a unique understanding of events and personalities. Acclaimed for his widely historical, pan-Asian vision, George brings this far-flung experience to a compulsively readable new book, The Dismantling of India. It is the story of India told in 35 concise biographies, beginning with Jamsetji Tata and ending with Narendra Modi.

The Devil's Own Luck Lucifer, Luck, and Moral Responsibility
Free Download John R. Gilhooly, "The Devil's Own Luck: Lucifer, Luck, and Moral Responsibility"
English | ISBN: 179360018X | 2022 | 114 pages | EPUB | 581 KB
Contemporary philosophy is interested in questions of luck and moral responsibility. Christian theology is largely unconcerned with luck because of its understanding of the creatureliness of the will. This understanding is rooted in story of the primal sin the narrative about how the first good creature chose wrongly. When considered philosophically, this story produces a problem for describing how a good creature can sin in ideal circumstances. The tradition has appealed to a voluntarist account of the devil's sin as a satisfying response to this problem. But some have worried that this kind of free choice succumbs to a responsibility denying kind of luck. This volume describes how this underlying story undermines worries about luck for Christian moral reasoning by reflecting on how any luck the devil has is his own. John R. Gilhooly argues that even if one regards the Devil as fictional, the primal sin remains an interesting philosophical test case, particularly for questions of moral luck. The reason that this is so is because it seems that moral luck is either irrelevant to moral judgment of the Devil, or an illegitimate moral concern at least as regards the primal sin.
