English | 2012 | ISBN: 071535597X, 048625304X | EPUB | pages: 200 | 9.1 mb
The history of glass and glass decoration extends back at least to the ancient Egyptians, who made small vessels of dark glass and decorated them with glass threads of contrasting colors. Occasionally glass vessels were also engraved on the lapidary's wheel. Today, the ancient art and craft of decorating glass continues to flourish among artists and crafters attracted by its combination of artistic beauty and skilled craftsmanship. Unfortunately, until the publication of this book, there were few if any practical instruction guides for beginners in this exciting and deeply rewarding field.

With contributions by J. R. L. Allen, M. Bell, R. J. Bradley, T. Champion, S. Crutchley, A. Firth, M. G. Fulford, A. J. Long, S. J. Mithen, D. O'Regan, S. J. Rippon, D. H. Roberts, and H. J. Tyson.E-book (PDF) published 2013.England's coastal zone contains an important legacy of historic assets, including a complex array of fragile and irreplaceable archaeological remains. These remains are vital for the understanding of Britain's emergence as an island, her developing relationship with the sea, and those maritime influences which contributed to the forging of our identity as a mercantile, industrial and imperial power. This report documents research jointly commissioned by English Heritage and the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England from the Universities of Reading and Southampton during 1994-5. It examines the character of the recorded coastal archaeological resource and identifies future themes for survey and investigation. It also considers the natural and human processes to which coastal archaeological remains are vulnerable, including sea-level change, and make recommendations aimed at achieving their improved management.

Economy's Tension The Dialectics of Community and Market
Free Download Stephen Gudeman, "Economy's Tension: The Dialectics of Community and Market"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0857457888, 1845455142 | PDF | pages: 196 | 0.7 mb
Why are we obsessed with calculating our selections? The author argues that competitive trade nurtures calculative reason, which provides the ground for most discourses on economy. But market descriptions of economy are incomplete. Drawing on a range of materials from small ethnographic contexts to global financial markets, the author shows that economy is dialectically made up of two value realms, termed mutuality and impersonal trade. One or the other may be dominant; however, market reason usually cascades into and debases the mutuality on which it depends. Using this cross-cultural model, the author explores mystifications of economic life, and explains how capital and derivatives can control an economy. The book offers a different conception of economic welfare, development, and freedom; it presents an approach for dealing with environmental devastation, and explains the growing inequalities of wealth within and between nations.
