Muslims on the Volga in the Viking Age In the Footsteps of Ibn Fadlan (Library of Medieval Studies)
Free Download Jonathan Shepard, "Muslims on the Volga in the Viking Age: In the Footsteps of Ibn Fadlan (Library of Medieval Studies) "
English | ISBN: 1784539333 | 2023 | 440 pages | PDF | 47 MB
The year 922 saw a series of remarkable face-to-face encounters in the steppes between Bukhara and the Middle Volga. Ibn Fadlan was an intrepid member of a diplomatic and religious mission from the distant caliphate in Baghdad to the ruler of the Volga Bulgars. His account gives a vivid eyewitness description of the peoples he came upon (whose appearance, rituals and filthy habits both fascinate and appal) and a famous depiction of a Viking Rus ship burial. It is unique testimony to burgeoning exchanges between several different cultures, and to the emergence of new political structures on the steppes. Yet the account survives only as part of a later composite work, raising questions of meaning and historical interpretation. This pioneering interdisciplinary study of Ibn Fadlan's text and the world he surveyed draws on a variety of specialists to give readers both 'the bigger picture' of cultural and economic change in Eurasia, Byzantium and the Muslim world, and hard facts, in the form of archaeological and numismatic data.

Music, Longing and Belonging Articulations of the Self and the Other in the Musical Realm
Free Download Magdalena Waligorska-huhle, "Music, Longing and Belonging: Articulations of the Self and the Other in the Musical Realm"
English | ISBN: 1443848301 | 2013 | 235 pages | PDF | 2 MB
With contributions from musicologists, historians, sociologists, anthropologists and literary scholars, this book provides an interdisciplinary perspective on how different modes of musical sociability - ranging from opera performances to collective singing and internet fan communities - inspire "imagined communities" that not only transcend national borders, but also challenge the boundaries between the self and the other. While the relationship between music and nationhood has been widely researched, few comparative and transnational studies on music and identity exist. The main focus of this volume, therefore, is on forms of musical belonging not bound by national identity, which take place in contexts of appropriation and displacement. The essays collected here address different modes of musical self-expression through the art of others and frame music as a unique medium of desire, which not only channels the experience of belonging during times of social and political upheaval, but also induces its opposite - non-belonging, detachment and dissent. The book is organized into four sections, each focusing on different aspect of musical experience: music as a site of cultural appropriation, music as a conduit of transnational identities, its role in diaspora and displacement, and, finally, music as a means of negotiating gendered identities.

Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life
Free Download Elaine Stratton Hild, "Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life"
English | ISBN: 0197685919 | 2024 | 240 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 5 MB
For centuries of European history, singing for a person at the moment of death was considered to be the ideal accompaniment to a life's ending. In Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life, author Elaine Stratton Hild examines and recovers the chants sung for the dying during the Middle Ages, beginning in the late eighth century. Along with the first editions of these melodies, she offers considerations of the functions that music played within the deathbed rituals, arguing that the chants served as vehicles with which communities offered comfort to a dying person.
