Devine 2017 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0141981571 | EPUB | 2 MB 'Deserves to be read by everyone interested in the future of the United Kingdom' Andrew Marr,The Sunday TimesThere can be no relationship in Europe's history more creative, significant, vexed and uneasy than that between Scotland and England. From the Middle Ages onwards the island of Britain has been shaped by the unique dynamic between Edinburgh and London, exchanging inhabitants, monarchs, money and ideas, sometimes in a spirit of friendship and at others in a spirit of murderous dislike.Tom Devine's seminal new book explores this extraordinary history in all its ambiguity, from the seventeenth century to the present. When not undermining each other with invading armies, both Scotland and England have broadly benefitted from each other's presence - indeed for long periods of time nobody questioned the union which joined them. But as Devine makes clear, it has for the most part been a relationship based on consent, not force, on mutual advantage, rather than antagonism - and it has always held the possibility of a political parting of the ways. With the United Kingdom under a level of scrutiny unmatched since the eighteenth centuryIndependence or Unionis the essential guide. It offers an in-depth exploration of the intricate interplay of geographical space, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping our cities and exacerbating spatial injustice. The construction industry, a vital agent in forging accessible environments, often falls short in accommodating persons with disabilities and older individuals. This important book underscores the urgent need for integrated approaches woven into the fabric of cities, companies, and the construction industry itself, to ensure universal accessibility. Drawing upon practical strategies and compelling case studies, the book presents actionable frameworks such as the DisCo Policy Framework and the Iceberg of Inequality Model, facilitating the assessment of progress towards achieving radical inclusion. Inviting readers to embark on a journey into the cities of tomorrow, where inclusion and belonging are the norm, it concludes with a simple idea: the future is accessible. Free Download Catherine M Hands, "Including Families and Communities in Urban Education (Hc) " English | ISBN: 1617354007 | 2011 | 330 pages | PDF | 4 MB A volume in Issues in Urban Education Series Editors Denise E. Armstrong, Brock University and Brenda J. McMahon, Florida State University This book is intended to examine in depth the issues surrounding family and community involvement initially presented in the book, Inclusion in Urban Educational Environments: Addressing Issues of Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice. It contributes to the ongoing conversations in academia as well as in the profession around effectively engaging all families in their children's education, and building relationships with diverse community members around common educational goals. The book seeks to address issues related to structure, culture, and the agency of individuals and educational organizations. Structure refers to the external forces that impose upon and attempt to define social action, particularly, the institutional arrangements that schools, families and communities have traditionally held in relationship to each other and to the district, state and federal government. Education is tied system of class relations that structures racism, classism and sexism in response to the desire of dominant groups to preserve their privilege and power. The consequence is the economic position of low-income ethnic minority students, the population that we find most frequently in urban schools, is merely reproduced. Students and families from these backgrounds often feel alienated and marginalized and thus unable to engage actively with schools that are viewed as representing the interests of the white middle class. Understanding the success and failures of school, family and community partnerships also demands an examination of the cultural factors that are involved. By looking at culture, both that of the school and the community, we gain a better understanding of how the ideologies, beliefs and values held by the various constituents give rise to ideological conflicts that may impede collaborations. Partnerships are driven by the individual actions or agency of those involved. This collection demonstrates how actions or agency are tied to structural and cultural factors, including racial, ethnic, class, linguistic and gendered positions. Through the contributions of a team of authors who examine family and community involvement in education, a compelling argument is made for the need to attend to issues of structure, culture, and agency. Typically applied to school reform and change issues, this framework adds a new perspective to the family and community involvement literature, and may help to explain why strong family-school-community partnerships are not more widespread despite the abundance of literature that details the benefits of partnering for students, school personnel and their partners. By looking at the structures in the schools, districts and broader community that impact family and community involvement, the organizational cultures that support or limit their involvement, and the ability for students, their families, the community members and school personnel to make a difference in education, the book not only demonstrates the importance of these elements, but how they work together or against each other. Most importantly, the book illustrates how authentic partnerships - characterized by respectful, two-way communication that leads to shared goals and mutually beneficial relationships - can be created and maintained. Free Download Katarzyna Bazarnik, "Incarnations of Materiality Textuality: From Modernism to Liberature" English | ISBN: 1443864048 | 2014 | 165 pages | PDF | 4 MB Liberature - coined from the Latin liber - is simultaneously a movement in contemporary Polish literature, and a term referring to literary works that integrate text and material features of the book into an organic whole in accordance with the author's design. The present volume collects essays inspired by this theoretical concept, first proposed by Polish poet Zenon Fajfer in 1999, but soon picked up and elaborated on by international scholars. As noted by the contributing authors, preceding Jessica Pressman's idea of "bookishness" and coinciding with N. Katherine Hayles' fundamental writings, liberature appeared at the end of the 20th century, "as if to resume and systematize the intuitions and provocative statements" of writers concerned with the future of the book. It fits into a wider turn towards the recognition of the embodied nature of information in anthropology, literary, textual, media and AI studies. Yet its distinctness consists in the fact that it was suggested by a creative writer, and that it proposes to see the authorially-shaped materiality of writing in terms of a literary genre. The essays collected here present the modernist roots and inspirations of liberature, address the semantics of typography and the question of the materiality of literary writing, and explore how the "abstract body of the printed book is transformed into an experience of embodiment." The volume is completed with a reprint of Fajfer's seminal essays with a view to making them more available to English-speaking readers. |
