Free Download Isabel Fernandes, "Creative Dialogues: Narrative and Medicine" English | ISBN: 1443874485 | 2015 | 315 pages | PDF | 1481 KB This volume is the outcome of work done in the groundbreaking field of Narrative Medicine by an interdisciplinary research team based at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) and devoted to the international project Narrative and Medicine since 2009. The articles and essays gathered here, heterogeneous as they may be (such is the natural outcome of research carried out across disciplines), are not only of high caliber when read individually, but also constitute an invaluable contribution to the larger field of Health Humanities, when taken as a collection. They will no doubt appeal and be highly beneficial to a general audience, encompassing first and foremost healthcare professionals and medical students, but also researchers in the Humanities, with a growing interest in this disciplinary interface. The reader will find, among contributors, the names of prestigious international scholars such as Joao Lobo Antunes, Rita Charon and Richard Zaner.
Free Download Douglas Stuart, "Creating the National Security State: A History of the Law That Transformed America" English | 2008 | pages: 357 | ISBN: 0691133719б 069115547X | PDF | 2,0 mb For the last sixty years, American foreign and defense policymaking has been dominated by a network of institutions created by one piece of legislation-the 1947 National Security Act. This is the definitive study of the intense political and bureaucratic struggles that surrounded the passage and initial implementation of the law. Focusing on the critical years from 1937 to 1960, Douglas Stuart shows how disputes over the lessons of Pearl Harbor and World War II informed the debates that culminated in the legislation, and how the new national security agencies were subsequently transformed by battles over missions, budgets, and influence during the early cold war. Finally, readers will learn how to re-allocate spaces and budgets, and how to market their new collection to patrons. This is a must-read for librarians who are looking to build a middle school collection in order to better serve their patrons. Should elected representatives express the views of the majority, or do they have the discretion to interpret their constituents' interests? How can representatives balance the desires of their parties and their electors? What should be done to strengthen the representation of groups that have been excluded from the political system? Representative democracy itself remains frequently contested, regarded as incapable of reflecting the will of the masses, or inadequate for today's global governance. Recently, however, this view of democratic representation has been under attack for its failure to capture the performative and constructive elements of the process of representation, and a new literature more attentive to these aspects of the relationship between representatives and the represented has arisen. In Creating Political Presence, a diverse and international group of scholars explores the implications of such a turn. Two broad, overlapping perspectives emerge. In the first section, the contributions investigate how political representation relates to empowerment, either facilitating or interfering with the capacity of citizens to develop autonomous judgment in collective decision making. Contributions in the second section look at representation from the perspective of inclusion, focusing on how representative relationships and claims articulate the demands of those who are excluded or have no voice. The final section examines political representation from a more systemic perspective, exploring its broader environmental conditions and the way it acquires democratic legitimacy.
Free Download Creating Cistercian Nuns: The Women's Religious Movement and Its Reform in Thirteenth-Century Champagne By Anne E. Lester 2017 | 287 Pages | ISBN: 1501713493 | PDF | 2 MB In Creating Cistercian Nuns, Anne E. Lester addresses a central issue in the history of the medieval church: the role of women in the rise of the religious reform movement of the thirteenth century. Focusing on the county of Champagne in France, Lester reconstructs the history of the women's religious movement and its institutionalization within the Cistercian order. The common picture of the early Cistercian order is that it was unreceptive to religious women. Male Cistercian leaders often avoided institutional oversight of communities of nuns, preferring instead to cultivate informal relationships of spiritual advice and guidance with religious women. As a result, scholars believed that women who wished to live a life of service and poverty were more likely to join one of the other reforming orders rather than the Cistercians. As Lester shows, however, this picture is deeply flawed. Between 1220 and 1240 the Cistercian order incorporated small independent communities of religious women in unprecedented numbers. Moreover, the order not only accommodated women but also responded to their interpretations of apostolic piety, even as it defined and determined what constituted Cistercian nuns in terms of dress, privileges, and liturgical practice. Lester reconstructs the lived experiences of these women, integrating their ideals and practices into the broader religious and social developments of the thirteenth century―including the crusade movement, penitential piety, the care of lepers, and the reform agenda of the Fourth Lateran Council. The book closes by addressing the reasons for the subsequent decline of Cistercian convents in the fourteenth century. Based on extensive analysis of unpublished archives, Creating Cistercian Nuns will force scholars to revise their understanding of the women's religious movement as it unfolded during the thirteenth century.
