Clark The Autobiography of Clark Terry
Free Download Quincy Jones, David Demsey, "Clark: The Autobiography of Clark Terry"
English | 2011 | pages: 344 | ISBN: 0520268466, 0520287517 | EPUB | 0,5 mb
Compelling from cover to cover, this is the story of one of the most recorded and beloved jazz trumpeters of all time. With unsparing honesty and a superb eye for detail, Clark Terry, born in 1920, takes us from his impoverished childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, where jazz could be heard everywhere, to the smoke-filled small clubs and carnivals across the Jim Crow South where he got his start, and on to worldwide acclaim. Terry takes us behind the scenes of jazz history as he introduces scores of legendary greats―Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, and Dianne Reeves, among many others. Terry also reveals much about his own personal life, his experiences with racism, how he helped break the color barrier in 1960 when he joined the Tonight Show band on NBC, and why―at ninety years old―his students from around the world still call and visit him for lessons.

Civility, Barbarism and the Evolution of International Humanitarian Law Who do the Laws of War Protect
Free Download Matt Killingsworth, "Civility, Barbarism and the Evolution of International Humanitarian Law: Who do the Laws of War Protect?"
English | ISBN: 1108488498 | 2024 | 262 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Efforts to moderate conflict are as old as conflict itself. Throughout the ages, restraint in warfare has been informed by religious and ethical considerations, chivalry and class, and, increasingly since the mid-19th century, a body of customary and treaty law variously referred to as the laws of war, the law of armed conflict (LOAC) or international humanitarian law (IHL). As they evolved from the mid-19th century, these laws were increasingly underpinned by humanitarianism, then in the mid-20th century, were assumed to be universal. But violations of these restraints are also as old as conflict itself. The history of conflict is replete with examples of exclusions from protections designed to moderate warfare. This edited volume explores the degree to which protections in modern warfare might be informed by notions of 'civility' and 'barbarism', or, to put it another way, asks if only those deemed to be civilised are afforded protections prescribed by the laws of war?

Civil Society and Development A Critical Exploration
Free Download Civil Society and Development: A Critical Exploration By Jude Howell
2001 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 1555876196 | PDF | 9 MB
Incorporated into the lexicons of academics, policymakers and grassroots activists, of multilateral development agencies and local NGOs alike, ""civil society"" has become a topic of widespread discussion. But is there in fact any common understanding of the term? How useful is it when applied to the South, and what difference does it make to bring the concept into the debate on development? This book explores the complex relationships among civil society, the state and market, in the context of democratic development. Drawing on case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America, it also unravels what is meant by development agencies - bilaterals, multilaterals, NGOs and international financial institutions, with their diverse approaches and agendas - when it refers to the urgent need to strengthen civil society.

City Publics The (Dis)enchantments of Urban Economics
Free Download City Publics: The (Dis)enchantments of Urban Economics By Sophie Watson
2006 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0415312272 | PDF | 15 MB
Some cities have grown into mega cities and some into uncontrolled sprawl; others have seen their centres decline with populations moving to the suburbs. In such times, questions of the public realm and public space in cities warrant even greater attention than previously received. Concerned with the borders and boundaries, constraints and limits on accepting, acknowledging and celebrating difference in public, Sophie Watson, through ethnographic studies, interrogates how difference is negotiated and performed. Focusing on spaces where to outside observers tension is relatively absent or invisible, Watson also reveals how the boundaries between the public and private are being negotiated and redrawn, and how public and private spaces are mutually constitutive. Through her investigation of the more ordinary and less dramatic forms of encounter and contestation in the city, Watson is able to conceive an urban public realm and urban public space that is heterogeneous and potentially progressive. With numerous photographs and drawings City Publics not only throws new light on encounters with others in public space, but also destabilizes dominant, sometimes simplistic, universalized accounts and helps us re-imagine urban public space as a site of potentiality, difference, and enchanted encounters.
