Free Download Marlon Lieber, "Reading Race Relationally: Embodied Dispositions and Social Structures in Colson Whitehead's Novels " English | ISBN: 3837663469 | 2023 | 270 pages | PDF | 2 MB What does it mean to write African American literature after the end of legalized segregation? In this study of Colson Whitehead's first six novels, Marlon Lieber argues that this question has permeated the Pulitzer Prize-winning author's writing since his 1999 debut The Intuitionist. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's relational sociology and Marxist critical theory, Lieber shows that Whitehead's oeuvre articulates the tension between the persistent presence of racism and transformations in the United States' class structure, which reveals new modes of abjection. At the same time, Whitehead imagines forms of writing that strive to transcend the histories of domination objectified in social structures and embodied in the form of habitus.
Free Download Marit Grøtta, "Reading Portrait Photographs in Proust, Kafka and Woolf: Modernism, Media and Emotion" English | ISBN: 1399526987 | 2024 | 232 pages | PDF | 8 MB Portrait photography increased in popularity during the modernist period and offered new ways of seeing and understanding the human face. This book examines how portrait photographs appeared as literary motifs in the works of three modernist writers with personal experience of the medium: Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka and Virginia Woolf. Combining perspectives from literary, visual and media studies, Marit Grøtta discusses these writers' ambivalent views on portrait photographs and the uncertain status of technical images in the early twentieth century more generally. In reconsidering the attention paid to analogue photographs in literature, this book throws light on both modernist reactions to portrait photography and on our relationships to photographs today. Free Download Michael Hofmann, "Reading Habermas: Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere" English | ISBN: 1498590160 | 2023 | 306 pages | EPUB, PDF | 417 KB + 2 MB Reading Habermas: Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere dissolves Habermas's monolithic stylization to precisely access his seminal distinction between the purely political polis of antiquity, which excludes the private economy from the res publica, and the modern public sphere with its rational-critical discourse about commodity exchange and social labor in the political economy. Deconstructing the uniform mold of Structural Transformation's narrative about a rise and fall of the bourgeois public sphere in modernity also allows to identify and understand the ideology-critical methodologies of Habermas's theory reconstruction of Kant's ideal of the liberal public in the context of the French Revolution. Free Download Alice Bell, "Reading Digital Fiction " English | ISBN: 0367626705 | 2024 | 218 pages | EPUB/pdf | 4 MB Reading Digital Fiction offers the first comprehensive and systematic theoretical, methodological, and analytical examination of digital fiction from a cognitive and empirical perspective. Proposing the new concept of "medial reading", it argues for the centrality of an audience's interest in, awareness of and/or attention to the medium in which a text is produced and received, and which we argue should be applied to reader data across media. The book analyses and theorises five generations of digital fiction and their reading including hypertext fiction, hypermedia fiction, narrative video games, app fiction, and virtual reality. It showcases medium- and platform-specific methods of qualitative reader response research across a variety of contexts and settings from screen-based and embodied interaction to gallery installation, and from reading group and individual interview to think-aloud methodologies. The book thus addresses the unique affordances of digital fiction reading by designing and reporting on new empirical studies focusing on hypertextuality, interactivity, immersion, as well as medium-specific forms of textual "you", ontological ambiguity, reader orientation and empathy. In so doing, the book refines, critiques, and expands cognitive, transmedial, and empirical narratology and stylistics by placing the reader of these new narratives front and centre. Barton Palmer, "ReFocus: The Literary Films of Richard Brooks " English | ISBN: 1474496571 | 2023 | 304 pages | PDF | 6 MB ReFocus: The Literary Films of Richard Brooks highlights the accomplishments of one of postwar America's most important and successful directors, with an emphasis on the "literary" aspects of his career, including his work as a screenwriter and adaptor of such modern classics as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , Lord Jim, and The Brothers Karamazov. Free Download John Price, "ReFocus: The Films of William Wyler " English | ISBN: 1399510460 | 2023 | 304 pages | PDF | 9 MB In his forty-five-year career, William Wyler not only traversed the silent and the sound eras, but also connected classic Hollywood to "new Hollywood." The range of his films also spans a wide spectrum of genres: from westerns to adaptations of classic literature, from crime thrillers to rom-coms, and from controversial topics to musicals. His three Oscars for Best Director are an achievement surpassed only by John Ford. His life experience as one of Hollywood's early immigrant artists also speaks to the foreign influence on classic Hollywood. Yet despite his awards and commercial success, artistic recognition has mostly eluded Wyler. This volume of the ReFocus series attempts to analyze this Wyler paradox and also seeks to contextualize and theorize selections from Wyler's canon and his relationship to American cinematic history and American culture. This collection has gathered contributions from international authors from extremely diverse backgrounds, and therefore differing perspectives on Wyler and his work. |
