Armies of Pestilence the Impact of Disease on History
Free Download Armies of Pestilence: the Impact of Disease on History By R.S. Bray
2000 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 0760719152 | PDF | 21 MB
The influence that disease has had on history has often been hidden behind the more 'glorious' exploits of individuals and monarchs. In Armies of Pestilence R.S. Bray offers a fresh contribution to the impact that illnesses have had on world history. The periods discussed span from the Biblical accounts of epidemics, through the Justinian plague (what was that deadly disease that has kept scientists in contention right through to the present day'), to the miscalculated 1976 influenza epidemic from which the American government took a long time to recover. Dr. Bray covers the Plague (the scourge of medieval Europe), malaria, yellow fever, smallpox, typhus and cholera. The author offers a comprehensive evaluation of many other works, both scientific and historical, which provide a vast basis for research on this subject. His vigorous style and timely injections of humour make this an absorbing and accessible book.

Armed Groups The Twenty–First–Century Threat
Free Download Peter G. Thompson, "Armed Groups: The Twenty-First-Century Threat"
English | ISBN: 1538168634 | 2023 | 292 pages | EPUB, PDF | 700 KB + 2 MB
Armed Groups is the most comprehensive text to provide a framework for categorizing the key actors that pose a threat to today's security arena-terrorists, mercenaries, insurgents, militias, and transnational criminal organizations-and analyzing their characteristics to provide a thorough overview. Drawing on case studies, histories, and a rich, yet underexplored theoretical literature, this study presents students with the tools to methodically examine these often overlooked, but key drivers of violence in the international system.

Free Download Aristoteles Gegen Epikur: eine Untersuchung uber die Prinzipien der hellenistischen Philosophie ausgehend vom Phanomen der Bewegung By Andree Hahmann
2017 | 484 Pages | ISBN: 3110499207 | PDF | 2 MB
It is well known that Early Modern philosophers rejected Aristotelian philosophy of nature. At the same time, they passionately embraced the major Hellenistic schools of philosophy. The study takes this fact as a point of departure to explain the fundamental differences between Aristotle and his Hellenistic successors. At the heart of the investigation lies Aristotle's discussion of motion, which is essential for many Aristotelian conceptions.

Are Statistics Only Made of Data
Free Download Are Statistics Only Made of Data?: Know-how and Presupposition from the 17th and 19th Centuries
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031512537 | 182 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 10 MB
This book examines several epistemological regimes in studies of numerical data over the last four centuries. It distinguishes these regimes and mobilises questions present in the philosophy of science, sociology and historical works throughout the 20th century. Attention is given to the skills of scholars and their methods, their assumptions, and the socio-historical conditions that made calculations and their interpretations possible. In doing so, questions posed as early as Émile Durkheim's and Ernst Cassirer's ones are revisited and the concept of symbolic form is put to the test in this particular survey, conducted over long period of time. Although distinct from a methodological and epistemological point of view, today these regimes may be found together in the toolbox of statisticians and those who comment on their conclusions. As such, the book is addressed to social scientists and historians and all those who are interested in numerical productions.

English | 2010 | pages: 141 | ISBN: 3709103673 | PDF | 23,5 mb
Book by Florian Beigel and Philip Christou, with contributions by Dominique Boudet (Consultant Editor), photo essay by Kang Woon-gu, and conversation with Ellis Woodman. Florian Beigel and the Architecture Research Unit were invited by the Provincial Government of Jeollabukdo, Korea in 2008, along with seven other teams to participate in an international ideas competition to develop urban design proposals for the Saemangeum land reclamation project. Saemangeum Island City comprises a surface area of some 400 km, more than a quater of the area of Greater London (which is approx. 1.570 km ). In late 2008, the design project by ARU / London Metropolitan University was declared one of three winning competition proposals (along with Columbia University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Kazuyo Sejima, Director of the 12th Architecture Biennale, has selected the ARU project to be part of the main exhibition in Venice 2010. The urban land-use concept plan begins with a phased landscape infrastructure design of 8 new islands with a highly remarkable solution as to environmental issues. This book offers a unique and timely approach to contemporary urban design research and practice.
