Free Download The Trojan Horse and Other Stories: Ten Ancient Creatures That Make Us Human by Julia Kindt
English | February 29, 2024 | ISBN: 1009411381 | True PDF | 372 pages | 7.3 MB
What makes us human? What, if anything, sets us apart from all other creatures? Ever since Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, the answer to these questions has pointed to our own intrinsic animal nature. Yet the idea that, in one way or another, our humanity is entangled with the non-human has a much longer and more venerable history. In the West, it goes all the way back to classical antiquity.

The Travels of Ibn Battuta, A.D. 1325–1354 Volume II
Free Download The Travels of Ibn Battuta, A.D. 1325-1354: Volume II By H. A. R. Gibb
2017 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 1409414833 | PDF | 20 MB
Ibn Battuta was born in Tangier in 1304. Between 1324 and 1354 he journeyed through North Africa and Asia Minor and as far as China. On a separate voyage he crossed the Sahara to the Muslim lands of West Africa. His journeys are estimated to have covered over 75,000 miles and he is the only medieval traveller known to have visited every Muslim state of the time, besides the 'infidel' countries of Istanbul, Ceylon and China. The first volume recorded Ibn Battuta's earliest journeys through Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Arabia. This volume continues with his journeys through Persia, Iraq and Arabia, Asia Minor and South Russia with detailed descriptions of the towns on the way and the customs of the inhabitants. Sir Hamilton Gibb's edition comprises four volumes with introduction and full notes. This first complete and scholarly edition in English has proved essential to orientalists and illuminating to medievalists. The travels are a major source for the political and economic life of large regions of Asia and Africa. The observations of this intelligent representative of Islamic culture on almost all the known inhabited world beyond Europe provide fruitful comparisons with the life and geographical knowledge of the West. Translated with revisions and new annotation from the Arabic text edited by C. Defrmery and B.R. Sanguinetti. Continued from Second Series 110, with continuous main pagination. Covering southern Persia, Iraq, southern Arabia, East Africa, the Persian Gulf, Asia Minor and South Russia. Continued in Second Series 141 and 178, with index in 190. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1962.

English | February 1, 2022 | ISBN: 1784778508 | 432 pages | MOBI | 92 Mb
Nori Jemil's ground-breaking practical photography book considers not just how to get better images, but also why and when to take them. It guides you to becoming a more confident and reflective travel photographer, as well as covering all the technical knowhow needed. Taking a journey around the seven continents, each chapter focuses on the main areas of travel imagery, from people and landscape to architecture and adventure. Bite-size advice on how to get the best from your camera is contextualised throughout the book, so you learn as you go. Travel photography has exploded across the world thanks to the huge leap in quality of both mobile phone cameras and bridge cameras, as well as the ease of public posting on social media. Award-winning travel photographer Nori Jemil has been riding the wave of these advances and has created a 'how to' guide with a difference. Her book is not an attempt to replicate other reference works on the subject, top-loading technical information and addressing an expert reader. Nor does it focus on gadgetry - the proliferation of new hardware means camera-based information can become obsolete quite quickly. Instead it is a travel companion, a book that can be read for the prose and stories, as well as the information it contains. It covers the main elements of travel photography in eleven sections, including advice from some of the best travel photographers working around the world. Technical information is embedded, given in the context of each shot, but personal travel stories are at the heart of every chapter, linked to key travel images as well as the full camera settings and detail of how and why each photo was taken.Nori Jemil is an award-winning photographer, writer, teacher and videographer. Her work has appeared in publications including National Geographic Traveller, BBC Travel, Adventure.com and Conde Nast Traveller. Over the past decade has won numerous awards, including Travel Photograph of the Year from Wanderlust travel magazine, and Travel Photographer of the Year from the British Guild of Travel Writers.

Free Download Daniel Kiel, "The Transition: Interpreting Justice from Thurgood Marshall to Clarence Thomas"
English | ISBN: 150363065X | 2023 | 376 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Every Supreme Court transition presents an opportunity for a shift in the balance of the third branch of American government, but the replacement of Thurgood Marshall with Clarence Thomas in 1991 proved particularly momentous. Not only did it shift the ideological balance on the Court; it was inextricably entangled with the persistent American dilemma of race. In The Transition, this most significant transition is explored through the lives and writings of the first two African American justices on Court, touching on the lasting consequences for understandings of American citizenship as well as the central currents of Black political thought over the past century.

Explaining the tragic imagination as a creative faculty employed to answer the perennial Riddle of the Sphinx - a theory of the world that advances human freedom and dignity in the face of historical injustice, cruelty and violence - Andy Amato seeks to recover and rehabilitate this concept by revealing its significance to both key works of philosophy and literature and our contemporary world.

The Traces of Jacques Derrida's Cinema
Free Download Timothy Holland, "The Traces of Jacques Derrida's Cinema"
English | ISBN: 0197694373 | 2024 | 280 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Situated at the intersection of film and media studies, literary theory, and continental philosophy, The Traces of Jacques Derrida's Cinema provides a trenchant account of the role of cinema in the oeuvre of one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, Jacques Derrida (1930-2004). The book is animated by Derrida's self-confessed passion for the movies, his reluctance to write about film despite the range of his corpus, and the generative encounters arising between his legacy and the field of film and media studies as a result. Given the expanse of its references, interdisciplinarity, and consideration of Derrida's approach to the experience of both spectatorship and the act of being filmed, The Traces of Jacques Derrida's Cinema contributes to the ongoing close analyses of the philosopher's work while also providing a rigorous introduction to deconstruction.
