Culture, History, and the Reception of Tennessee Williams in China
Free Download Shouhua Qi, "Culture, History, and the Reception of Tennessee Williams in China "
English | ISBN: 3031169336 | 2022 | 208 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book is the first comprehensive study of the reception of Tennessee Williams in China, from rejection and/or misgivings to cautious curiosity and to full-throated acceptance, in the context of profound changes in China's socioeconomic and cultural life and mores since the end of the Cultural Revolution. It fills a conspicuous gap in scholarship in the reception of one of the greatest American playwrights and joins book-length studies of Chinese reception of Shakespeare, Ibsen, O'Neill, Brecht, and other important Western playwrights whose works have been eagerly embraced and appropriated and have had catalytic impact on modern Chinese cultural life.

Culturally Responsive Strategies for Reforming STEM Higher Education Turning the TIDES on Inequity
Free Download Kelly M. Mack, "Culturally Responsive Strategies for Reforming STEM Higher Education: Turning the TIDES on Inequity"
English | ISBN: 1787434060 | 2019 | 304 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
By the end of this decade, the U.S. economy will annually create hundreds of thousands of new jobs requiring a bachelor's degree in STEM fields, particularly computer science. This increasing need for computer scientists, coupled with an inconsistent agenda for managing dramatic shifts in the demographic landscape of higher education, compromises our competitiveness in scientific discovery and innovation. As higher education seeks to address this issue, the need for more culturally responsive approaches to undergraduate STEM teaching also increases. This book uses the power of reflection, storytelling, and data to holistically demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel professional development intervention for STEM faculty - Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM, or TIDES - that significantly increased faculty self-efficacy in implementing culturally responsive pedagogies. In it, the editors combine the authentic voices of authors from multiple institutional contexts and individual worldviews to assimilate and synthesize broad theoretical concepts into practice in usable ways, while also offering concrete applicable examples of strategies and solutions that serve as an important comprehensive reference for all undergraduate educators and administrators. This practical guide provides a durable platform for building capacity in understanding of the cultural complexities and institutional realities of recruiting and retaining diverse students in STEM, particularly the computer sciences.

Cultural Psychology and Acculturation
Free Download Cultural Psychology and Acculturation
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009451057 | 116 Pages | PDF (True) | 3 MB
This Element offers a new theoretical model of acculturation within the general framework of cultural psychology. It is divided into four sections. First, cross-cultural and cultural orientations are contrasted. The psychology of economic migration (EARN), separate from the psychology of acculturation (LEARN), is the theme of the next section. Berry's model of acculturation preferences is discussed in section three. It serves as a contrasting reference point for the tripartite model of bicultural competencies, developed in the final section. The three interconnected components are symbols, language, and values/practices characterize both enculturation and acculturation. As a second culture learning process, acculturation is not restricted to immigration. It may take a vicarious (remote) shape in the home country. Reaching bicultural competencies and identities, in the long run, is the proposed outcome of acculturation.

Cultivating the Confucian Individual The Confucian Education Revival in China
Free Download Canglong Wang, "Cultivating the Confucian Individual: The Confucian Education Revival in China "
English | ISBN: 303127668X | 2023 | 272 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This book explores the complexities of cultivating 'Confucian individuals' through classics study in contemporary China by drawing on the individualization thesis and its implications for the Confucian education revival. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at a Confucian classical school, three topics are investigated: parents' narratives and actions related to 'dis-embedding' their children from mainstream state education and transferring them to Confucian education as an alternative; the specific discourses and practices of teaching and learning the classics in everyday school life, guided by the aim of training students to become autonomous learners; and the institutional and subjective dilemmas that arise when parents and students seek to 're-embed' themselves in either the state education system or further Confucian studies at an advanced academy for the next stage of education. The research presented in this book contributes to understanding the hidden dynamics of individualization in the Confucian education revival and the intricacies of subject-making through Confucian teaching and learning in the socialist state of China.

Ctesias' Persica and Its Near Eastern Context
Free Download Ctesias' Persica and Its Near Eastern Context By Matt Waters
2017 | 184 Pages | ISBN: 0299310906 | PDF | 2 MB
The Persica is an extensive history of Assyria and Persia written by the Greek historian Ctesias, who served as a doctor to the Persian king Artaxerxes II around 400 bce. Written for a Greek readership, the Persica influenced the development of both historiographic and literary traditions in Greece. It also, contends Matt Waters, is an essential but often misunderstood source for the history of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Waters, as a historian of Persia with command of Akkadian, Elamite, and Old Persian languages in addition to Latin and Greek, offers a fresh interdisciplinary analysis of the Persica. He shows in detail how Ctesias' history, though written in a Greek literary style, was infused with two millennia of Mesopotamian and Persian motifs, legends, and traditions. This Hellenized version of Persian culture was enormously influential in antiquity, shaping Greek stereotypes of effeminate Persian monarchs, licentious and vengeful queens, and conniving eunuchs. Waters' revealing study contributes significantly to knowledge of ancient historiography, Persian dynastic traditions and culture, and the influence of Near Eastern texts and oral tradition on Greek literature.

Crypto and AI From Coevolution to Quantum Revolution
Free Download Crypto and AI: From Coevolution to Quantum Revolution by Behrouz Zolfaghari, Hamid Nemati, Naoto Yanai
English | November 15, 2023 | ISBN: 3031448065 | 242 pages | MOBI | 6.24 Mb
This book studies the intersection between cryptography and AI, highlighting the significant cross-impact and potential between the two technologies. The authors first study the individual ecosystems of cryptography and AI to show the omnipresence of each technology in the ecosystem of the other one. Next, they show how these technologies have come together in collaborative or adversarial ways. In the next section, the authors highlight the coevolution being formed between cryptography and AI. Throughout the book, the authors use evidence from state-of-the-art research to look ahead at the future of the crypto-AI dichotomy. The authors explain how they anticipate that quantum computing will join the dichotomy in near future, augmenting it to a trichotomy. They verify this through two case studies highlighting another scenario wherein crypto, AI and quantum converge. The authors study current trends in chaotic image encryption as well as information-theoretic cryptography and show how these trends lean towards quantum-inspired artificial intelligence (QiAI). After concluding the discussions, the authors suggest future research for interested researchers.
