Plato's Parmenides
Free Download Plato's Parmenides By Parmenides.; Socrates.; Zeno, Zeno; Parmenides.; Plato.; Scolnicov, Samuel; Socrates
2003 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 0520224035 | PDF | 2 MB
Of all Plato's dialogues, the Parmenides is notoriously the most difficult to interpret. Scholars of all periods have disagreed about its aims and subject matter. The interpretations have ranged from reading the dialogue as an introduction to the whole of Platonic metaphysics to seeing it as a collection of sophisticated tricks, or even as an elaborate joke. This work presents an illuminating new translation of the dialogue together with an extensive introduction and running commentary, giving a unified explanation of the Parmenides and integrating it firmly within the context of Plato's metaphysics and methodology. Scolnicov shows that in the Parmenides Plato addresses the most serious challenge to his own philosophy: the monism of Parmenides and the Eleatics. In addition to providing a serious rebuttal to Parmenides, Plato here re-formulates his own theory of forms and participation, arguments that are central to the whole of Platonic thought, and provides these concepts with a rigorous logical and philosophical foundation. In Scolnicov's analysis, the Parmenides emerges as an extension of ideas from Plato's middle dialogues and as an opening to the later dialogues. Scolnicov's analysis is crisp and lucid, offering a persuasive approach to a complicated dialogue. This translation follows the Greek closely, and the commentary affords the Greekless reader a clear understanding of how Scolnicov's interpretation emerges from the text. This volume will provide a valuable introduction and framework for understanding a dialogue that continues to generate lively discussion today.

Plato's Laws force and truth in politics
Free Download Plato's Laws : force and truth in politics By Sanday, Eric; Plato.; Recco, Gregory
2012 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 0253001781 | EPUB | 5 MB
Readers of Plato have often neglected the Laws because of its length and density. In this set of interpretive essays, notable scholars of the Laws from the fields of classics, history, philosophy, and political science offer a collective close reading of the dialogue "book by book" and reflect on the work as a whole. In their introduction, editors Gregory Recco and Eric Sanday explore the connections among the essays and the dramatic and productive exchanges between the contributors. This volume fills a major gap in studies on Plato's dialogues by addressing the cultural and historical context of the Laws and highlighting their importance to contemporary scholarship.

Plants and People in the African Past Progress in African Archaeobotany (2024)
Free Download Plants and People in the African Past: Progress in African Archaeobotany by Anna Maria Mercuri
English | PDF,EPUB | 2018 | 577 Pages | ISBN : 3319898388 | 129.99 MB
There is an essential connection between humans and plants, cultures and environments, and this is especially evident looking at the long history of the African continent. This book, comprising current research in archaeobotany on Africa, elucidates human adaptation and innovation with respect to the exploitation of plant resources. In the long-term perspective climatic changes of the environment as well as human impact have posed constant challenges to the interaction between peoples and the plants growing in different countries and latitudes.

Plant–Pest Interactions From Molecular Mechanisms to Chemical Ecology Chemical Ecology
Free Download Indrakant K. Singh, "Plant-Pest Interactions: From Molecular Mechanisms to Chemical Ecology: Chemical Ecology"
English | ISBN: 9811524661 | 2021 | 484 pages | PDF | 10 MB
As food producers, plants are constantly under attack by insects. Over the course of evolution, plants have not only developed a sophisticated defense apparatus but have also refined biochemical defense mechanisms to protect themselves, thereby maintaining the ecological balance. Plant-pest interactions induce an elaborate array of reactions involving the release of volatile compounds, effector and signaling molecules, trans-membrane proteins, and a variety of enzymes and hormones.
