The Structure of Systemic Corruption How Corruption Consolidates in Local Governments
Free Download The Structure of Systemic Corruption: How Corruption Consolidates in Local Governments by Oliver Meza, Elizabeth Pérez-Chiqués
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 200 Pages | ISBN : 3031641167 | 12.4 MB
This book presents a series of interconnected studies designed to understand systemic corruption in local governments. Coined as the Corruption Consolidation Framework (CCF), this novel approach elucidates how corruption becomes the rule in formal institutional settings and further consolidates. The CCF analyzes the problem along four dimensions, offering a unique contribution to make sense of a complex problem without oversimplifying the subject. Chapters in the book explore the CCF in case studies conducted across Latin American municipalities in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Puerto Rico, however, authors believe the CCF is applicable around the world both in the Global South and in Western countries. The volume is a promising tool for the academic community in the public administration, policy studies, and local government fields. It can also be used in undergraduate and graduate courses on corruption, governance, local governments, and Latin American studies. Finally, it offers a general roadmap to citizens and policymakers about what can be done in cases where corruption has become the rule of the game in local governments.

The Strength of Nonstandard Analysis
Free Download The Strength of Nonstandard Analysis by Imme Berg, Vítor Neves
English | PDF | 2007 | 415 Pages | ISBN : 3211499040 | 18.4 MB
Nonstandard Analysis enhances mathematical reasoning by introducing new ways of expression and deduction. Distinguishing between standard and nonstandard mathematical objects, its inventor, the eminent mathematician Abraham Robinson, settled in 1961 the centuries-old problem of how to use infinitesimals correctly in analysis. Having also worked as an engineer, he saw not only that his method greatly simplified mathematically proving and teaching, but also served as a powerful tool in modelling, analyzing and solving problems in the applied sciences, among others by effective rescaling and by infinitesimal discretizations.

The Starlight Night The Sky in the Writings of Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Hopkins, Second Edition
Free Download The Starlight Night: The Sky in the Writings of Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Hopkins, Second Edition by David H. Levy
English | PDF (True) | 2016 | 240 Pages | ISBN : 3319198777 | 4.3 MB
In this updated second edition renowned amateur comet-searcher David H. Levy expands on his work about the intricate relationship between the night sky and the works of English Literature. This revised and expanded text includes new sections on Alfred Lord Tennyson and Gerald Manley Hopkins (both amateur astronomers), extending the time period analyzed in the first edition from early modern literature to encompass the Victorian age. Although the sky enters into much of literature through the ages, British authors offer an especially fertile connection to the heavens, and Levy links the works of seminal authors from Shakespeare on to specific celestial events and scientific advances.

The Square Kilometre Array A Science Mega–Project in the Making, 1990–2012
Free Download The Square Kilometre Array: A Science Mega-Project in the Making, 1990-2012 by Richard T. Schilizzi , Ronald D. Ekers , Peter E. Dewdney , Philip Crosby
English | PDF EPUB (True ) | 2024 | 645 Pages | ISBN : 3031513738 | 77.1 MB
The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is a grand vision project to build the most sensitive radio telescope in the world. This book tells the story of its development - a story of transformational science, innovative engineering, and global collaboration. Its journey has been long and complex, reflecting the many issues faced in creating an affordable design, choosing a site, and developing a viable global organisation starting from a simple working group of far-sighted and persistent astronomers in 1993.

The Spiral Galaxy M33
Free Download The Spiral Galaxy M33 by P. Hodge
English | PDF (True) | 2012 | 163 Pages | ISBN : 9400720246 | 7.4 MB
This book summarizes the gathering of information on and the growing understanding of M33 from the 1920s, when Hubble first determined its true nature, to the 21st century, when the Hubble Telescope probed deeply into its many secrets. With its regular symmetrical spiral structure, and its being not tilted too much and near enough to allow detailed studies of its stars, M33 is well-suited for the study of a typical spiral galaxy.

The Social Relations of Physics, Mysticism, and Mathematics Studies in Social Structure, Interests, and Ideas
Free Download The Social Relations of Physics, Mysticism, and Mathematics: Studies in Social Structure, Interests, and Ideas by Sal Restivo
English | PDF | 1985 | 303 Pages | ISBN : 902771536X | 28.5 MB
The problems I address in this book are among the least studied in the soci ology of science and knowledge. Part I is a critique of the claim that there are parallels between ancient mysticism and modern physics, and a sociological analysis of this claim as a strategy in intellectual conflict. This study must. ultimately be rooted more firmly in a: type of sociology of knowledge that is just now beginning to crystallize (and which I discuss in Chapter 7), and a sociology of religion that is not so much unknown as underground, and timid, that is, a non-worshipful materialist sociology of religion. My study of physics-mysticism parallelism is a vehicle for exploring epistemic strategies. I thus conclude Part I by sketching a materialist, emancipatory epistemic strategy. My conclusion brings together a number of ideas formulated by myself and others over the past several years, but stops short of a systematic synthesis. A more integrated and coherent "model" than what I can sketch here must wait on the results of research now in progress in the critical (as opposed to apologetic or worshipful) sociology of knowledge.

The Self–Deception Trap Exploring the Economic Dimensions of Charity Dependency within Africa–Europe Relations
Free Download The Self-Deception Trap: Exploring the Economic Dimensions of Charity Dependency within Africa-Europe Relations by Carlos Lopes
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 260 Pages | ISBN : 3031575903 | 12 MB
This book examines the economic relationship between Africa and Europe. It highlights the stigmatized narratives about Africa and analyses how they influence a range of key actors and processes. This is illustrated by the actions of European actors who reinforce negative narratives through replacing real economic transformation and development with charity, while African leaders compete to maximize aid donations and help further these narratives.

English | PDF (True) | 2006 | 345 Pages | ISBN : 3540373535 | 5.8 MB
The present volume is a collection of reviews, essays and personal reminiscences on Occhialini's scientific life and work. Through these recollections the reader will also gain a vivid impression of the pioneering days of elementary particle physics when new detection methods emerged, like the triggered cloud chamber and nuclear emulsions - two techniques perfected by Occhialini - which made progress on comic ray physics possible in the first place.
