Soft Assets in Smart and Resilient City Development
Free Download Soft Assets in Smart and Resilient City Development by Eiko Wataya , Rajib Shaw
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 195 Pages | ISBN : 9819733723 | 28.1 MB
Over the past decade, building smarter, resilient cities is an established global trend in urban development, including developing countries. Unexpected external shocks, disasters and damage from climate change have major impacts on sustainable growth and well-being for citizens in today's cities and requires comprehensive solutions. To deal with these negative events, cities predominantly invest in hard physical infrastructure, with less attention on non-physical soft assets which are intangible in nature and more difficult to quantify, but essential to achieve effective, balanced sustainable development. The value of soft assets can be substantial, and consistent implementation by cities can generate diverse value and be transformative for their urban development. For that purpose, cities need to establish an appropriate strategy, framework and structure to incorporate soft assets during the plan and implementation of hard infrastructure.

Social Contract Theory and International Relations From Hobbes to Kant
Free Download Social Contract Theory and International Relations: From Hobbes to Kant by Stephen Chadwick
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 180 Pages | ISBN : 3031642201 | 7.1 MB
This book provides a systematic analysis of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Kant with respect to international relations. These philosophers belong to the social contract tradition and are considered some of the most influential political theorists. Their ideas have played a role in the formation of national political constitutions and remain very influential both in understanding and legitimising the structure of societies around the world. This book is an innovative analysis of what these thinkers have claimed regarding the relationship between nation states, rather than contributing to the established scholarship on what they have said about individual political societies. Specifically, individual chapters examine war and peace, world governance, inequality, and terrorism.

Small Astronomical Observatories Amateur and Professional Designs and Constructions
Free Download Small Astronomical Observatories: Amateur and Professional Designs and Constructions by Patrick Moore
English | PDF(True) | 1996 | 229 Pages | ISBN : 3540199136 | 24.3 MB
In Small Astronomical Observatories, Patrick Moore has collected descriptions of amateur and small professional observatories currently in use in Europe and America, showing how many astronomers have built their own observatory, often with effective and sometimes extraordinary improvisations to reduce the cost. There is a photograph of each, along with details of its construction and a foreword written by Patrick Moore. In addition to providing a fascinating study for its own sake, Small Astronomical Observatories offers a unique fund of ideas and practical details for anyone who wants to build an amateur or small professional observatory.

Slow Onset Disasters Linking Urban Built Environment and User–oriented Strategies to Assess and Mitigate Multiple Risks
Free Download Slow Onset Disasters: Linking Urban Built Environment and User-oriented Strategies to Assess and Mitigate Multiple Risks by Graziano Salvalai , Enrico Quagliarini , Juan Diego Blanco Cadena , Gabriele Bernardini
English | EPUB (True) | 2024 | 134 Pages | ISBN : 3031520920 | 22.1 MB
The book provides an overview of the Slow Onset Disasters (SLOD) in the urban built environment discussing potential strategies to assess and mitigate multiple climate change related risks. Climate change evidence has been reported in the last decades, suggesting that the anthropogenic activities are accelerating these changes towards a warmer and more polluted environment. In this context, SLODs have been linked to climate change related disasters and have been stated to have a higher impact risk within dense built environment (BE). Therefore, the book presents a description of the most relevant SLODs, their significance, and confluence, the way in which scientists and entities are monitoring their progression at different scales, a structured risk assessment strategy and the deconstruction of the BE characteristics that make it more prone to SLODs risk. In addition, it highlights the necessity of adapting the traditional risk assessment methods, to account for different vulnerabilitytypes, including the morphology and materiality of the BE, and the BE users' characteristics. In fact, individual features influence users' responses and tolerance to environmental stressors, because of age, health, gender, habits, and behaviour, thus impacting the users' vulnerability. Exposure can then amplify these issues, since it defines the number of users that can be effectively affected by the SLOD. Starting from this perspective, the book first traces literature-based correlations between individual features, use behaviour, and individual response to the SLOD-altered open spaces. Then, a novel methodology, to quantify the variations of users' vulnerability and exposure, is offered, to support designers in quickly defining input scenarios for risk assessment and mitigation. Lastly, it demonstrates, through a case study, the SLOD risk assessment framework proposed and the evaluation of the efficacy of risk mitigation strategies.

Skull Base Reconstruction Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks and Skull Base Defects
Free Download Skull Base Reconstruction: Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks and Skull Base Defects by Edward C. Kuan, Bobby A. Tajudeen, Hamid R. Djalilian, Harrison W. Lin
English | EPUB (True) | 2023 | 486 Pages | ISBN : 3031279360 | 111 MB
This text, edited by two fellowship-trained rhinologists and two fellowship-trained neurotologists, represents an up-to-date comprehensive resource for any clinician or scientist involved in skull base reconstruction. Each chapter is written by a "super specialist" who has a clinical and/or academic focus in skull base pathologies and reconstruction. The first section is dedicated to basic principles, anatomy, physiology, imaging and anesthetic considerations. The second and third sections discuss pathological processes that lead to cerebrospinal fluid leaks and the need for skull base reconstruction within the anterior and lateral skull base, respectively. The fourth and fifth sections focus on anterior and lateral skull base reconstruction, respectively, with attention to reconstruction techniques and strategies for managing each defect type. The sixth section comprehensively reviews postoperative care and management strategies, where there is high variability and limited evidence, and is intended to present multiple perspectives that each carry merit. The final section highlights developments, research and emerging ideas regarding this ever-growing topic.
