Mobile Banditry East and Central European Itinerant Criminal Groups in the Netherlands
Free Download Dina Siegel, "Mobile Banditry: East and Central European Itinerant Criminal Groups in the Netherlands"
English | ISBN: 946236110X | 2014 | 152 pages | PDF | 7 MB
Europe is increasingly being plagued by itinerant crime groups, a trend also known as 'mobile banditry.' Even though the phenomenon of mobile banditry has existed in Europe for centuries, in recent years great concern has risen about the increase in the number of gangs from East and Central Europe who have been committing various types of crimes in West European countries. This book provides an explanation and analysis of the historical, political, economic, and cultural backgrounds of the phenomenon 'itinerant criminal gangs' from the following perspectives: a) the lessons learned from comparable situations in the past; b) the inevitable negative effects of globalization; c) the power of attraction of the West; and d) the gulf between the rich and poor and between West and East Europe. An analysis of the connections between organized crime, shady entrepreneurs, and corrupt politicians in East and Central Europe on the one hand, and the relationship between migrants and criminal groups in the Netherlands on the other, provide an explanation on the dynamics of the markets in stolen goods. Based on 127 interviews and observations in the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Romania, as well as an analysis of court files and literature, the research looks at the socio-cultural background of these criminals, how they operate, what happens to the stolen goods, and the efforts that the Dutch, Eastern/Central European states, and the European Union have initiated to combat this form of organized crime.

Mites Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour Life at a Microscale
Free Download Mites: Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour: Life at a Microscale By David Evans Walter, Heather C. Proctor (auth.)
2013 | 494 Pages | ISBN: 9400771630 | PDF | 12 MB
More than 40,000 species of mites have been described, and up to 1 million may exist on earth. These tiny arachnids play many ecological roles including acting as vectors of disease, vital players in soil formation, and important agents of biological control. But despite the grand diversity of mites, even trained biologists are often unaware of their significance. Mites: Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour (2nd edition) aims to fill the gaps in our understanding of these intriguing creatures. It surveys life cycles, feeding behaviour, reproductive biology and host-associations of mites without requiring prior knowledge of their morphology or taxonomy. Topics covered include evolution of mites and other arachnids, mites in soil and water, mites on plants and animals, sperm transfer and reproduction, mites and human disease, and mites as models for ecological and evolutionary theories.

Mister Ma's Grammar Guide to Literary Chinese
Free Download Muhammad Wolfgang G a Schmidt, "Mister Ma's Grammar Guide to Literary Chinese. The Original Chinese Text of the Mashi Wentong with Chinese-English Character and Word Glossaries"
English | 2018 | pages: 681 | ISBN: 3959354401 | PDF | 10,1 mb
This Grammar on Literary Chinese by Ma Jianzhong (1845-1900) was the first of its kind ever to be written by a native Chinese on Chinese and was published in 1898. It came at a time when Imperial China was in decline not only by loss of her sovereignty to the then Western colonial powers and when there was a strong feeling of insecurity about the relevance of ancient native Chinese culture in a modern world and its continued existence under the rising pressure to modernise in order to cope with the West and the rest of the modern world. Chinese Language Planning and Reform for the purpose of creating a national standard language and to spread literacy in all parts of society was seen as an essential part of such a modernisation process. Ma's work was only a first step in a longer series of research work and language planning and reform projects to follow in the decades after him. This book offers Ma's original Chinese text with Chinese-English glossaries at the end for Western students and researchers in Chinese Linguistics.

English | ISBN: 2503607748 | 2024 | 350 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The Decapolis city of Jerash has long attracted attention from travellers and scholars, due both to the longevity of the site and the remarkable finds uncovered during successive phases of excavation that have taken place from 1902 onwards. Between 2011 and 2016, a Danish-German team, led by the universities of Aarhus and Munster, focused their attention on the Northwest Quarter of Jerash - the highest point within the walled city - and this volume is the sixth in a series of books presenting the team's final results. In this volume, a wide range of miscellaneous items discovered in the Northwest Quarter are presented, ranging from prehistoric lithics to Ottoman pipes. Material finds covered include stone sculpture, utensils, and inscriptions, as well as bone objects, spindle whorls, and bread stamps, while some scientific analyses of jewellery and terracotta figurines complement the studies. These chapters ensure that all finds from the Northwest Quarter - no matter how small - are made available to researchers, with the contributions gathered here offering unique new insights into the material groups from Gerasa, later Jerash, and into the lives of the population of the city from a longue duree perspective.

Minneapolis Madams The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront
Free Download Minneapolis Madams: The Lost History of Prostitution on the Riverfront By Penny A. Petersen
2013 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0816665230 | EPUB | 8 MB
Sex, money, and politics-no, it's not a thriller novel. Minneapolis Madams is the surprising and riveting account of the Minneapolis red-light district and the powerful madams who ran it. Penny Petersen brings to life this nearly forgotten chapter of Minneapolis history, tracing the story of how these "houses of ill fame" rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century and then were finally shut down in the early twentieth century. In their heyday Minneapolis brothels were not only open for business but constituted a substantial economic and political force in the city. Women of independent means, madams built custom bordellos to suit their tastes and exerted influence over leading figures and politicians. Petersen digs deep into city archives, period newspapers, and other primary sources to illuminate the Minneapolis sex trade and its opponents, bringing into focus the ideologies and economic concerns that shaped the lives of prostitutes, the men who used their services, and the social-purity reformers who sought to eradicate their trade altogether. Usually written off as deviants, madams were actually crucial components of a larger system of social control and regulation. These entrepreneurial women bought real estate, hired well-known architects and interior decorators to design their bordellos, and played an important part in the politics of the developing city.Petersen argues that we cannot understand Minneapolis unless we can grasp the scope and significance of its sex trade. She also provides intriguing glimpses into racial interactions within the vice economy, investigating an African American madam who possibly married into one of the city's most prestigious families. Fascinating and rigorously researched, Minneapolis Madams is a true detective story and a key resource for anyone interested in the history of women, sexuality, and urban life in Minneapolis.
