Disinherited Generations Our Struggle to Reclaim Treaty Rights for First Nations Women and their Descendants
Free Download Nellie Carlson, "Disinherited Generations: Our Struggle to Reclaim Treaty Rights for First Nations Women and their Descendants"
English | ISBN: 0888646429 | 2013 | 216 pages | EPUB | 8 MB
This oral autobiography of two remarkable Cree women tells their life stories against a backdrop of government discrimination, First Nations activism, and the resurgence of First Nations communities. Nellie Carlson and Kathleen Steinhauer, who helped to organize the Indian Rights for Indian Women movement in western Canada in the 1960s, fought the Canadian government's interpretation of treaty and Indigenous Rights, the Indian Act, and the male power structure in their own communities in pursuit of equal rights for Indigenous women and children. After decades of activism and court battles, First Nations women succeeded in changing these oppressive regulations, thus benefitting thousands of their descendants. Those interested in human rights, activism, history, and Indigenous Studies will find that these personal stories, enriched by detailed notes and photographs, form a passionate record of an important, continuing struggle. Foreword by Maria Campbell.

Discursive Renovatio in Lope de Vega and Calderón Studies on Spanish Baroque Drama
Free Download Joachim Küpper, "Discursive "Renovatio" in Lope de Vega and Calderón: Studies on Spanish Baroque Drama"
English | ISBN: 3110556081 | 2017 | 493 pages | EPUB, PDF | 5 MB + 2 MB
This volume presents a new approach to Spanish Baroque drama, inspired by Foucauldian discourse archeology, whose rare fusion of meticulous philology and ambitious theory will be exciting and fruitful both for specialists of Spanish literature and for anyone invested in the history of European thought. Detailed readings are dedicated to some of the most prominent plays by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, both autos sacramentales (El viaje del alma; El divino Orfeo; La lepra de Constantino) and comedias (El castigo sin venganza; El príncipe constante; El médico de su honra). The "archeological" perspective cast on the plays implies an integration of their discourse-historical "foils", from pagan antiquity through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as a discussion of related discourses, mainly theological, philosophical and historiographical. A separate "excursus" suggests a reconsideration of the common manner in which the discursive relation between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Mannerism and the Baroque is conceptualized.

Discourse, Desire, and Fantasy in Jurgen Habermas' Critical Theory
Free Download Discourse, Desire, and Fantasy in Jurgen Habermas' Critical Theory By Kenneth MacKendrick
2007 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 041595617X | PDF | 4 MB
This book argues that Jürgen Habermas' critical theory can be productively developed by incorporating a wider understanding of fantasy and imagination as part of its conception of communicative rationality and communicative pathologies. Given that meaning is generated both linguistically and performatively, MacKendrick argues that desire and fantasy must be taken into consideration as constitutive aspects of intersubjective relations. His aim is to show that Habermasian social theory might plausibly renew its increasingly severed ties with the early critical theory of the Frankfurt School by taking account of these features of practice life, thus simultaneously rekindling the relevance of the nearly forgotten emancipatory intent in his earlier work and rejuvenating an emphasis on the contemporary critique of reason. Thisinnovative newstudywill be of interest to those focusing on the early writings of Habermas, the writings of the Frankfurt School, and the relation between critical theory, hermeneutics, and psychoanalysis.

Discourse Markers in Early Koine Greek Cognitive–Functional Analysis and LXX Translation Technique
Free Download Christopher J. Fresch, "Discourse Markers in Early Koine Greek: Cognitive-Functional Analysis and LXX Translation Technique "
English | ISBN: 1628375434 | 2023 | 304 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Using a cognitive-functional linguistic framework and cross-linguistic research on discourse markers, Christopher J. Fresch investigates the use of five discourse markers (äÝ, åἰ/ἐὰí ìÞ, ἀëëÜ, ἀëë᾽ ἤ, ìÝí) in the documentary papyri of the third to first centuries BCE and the Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible. Through this analysis, Fresch proposes linguistically grounded descriptions for how each discourse marker uniquely functions to guide readers in how they process and comprehend the text. Based on these descriptions, he examines the instances of these discourse markers in the Greek translation of the Minor Prophets and how the translator used them to render the Hebrew text. Fresch presents a picture of a translator who selected discourse markers based on their own understanding of the structure, flow, and meaning of the underlying Hebrew text. Their use attests to a translator who was contextually aware and who desired to produce a translation in idiomatic Koine.

Disasters and Cultural Stereotypes
Free Download Elya Tzaneva, Fang Sumei, Edwin Schmitt, "Disasters and Cultural Stereotypes"
English | 2012 | pages: 285 | ISBN: 144384165X | PDF | 3,6 mb
This volume is a second attempt of a joint international research team (consisting of Bulgarian, Chinese, Russian and American ethnologists), to contribute to a domain of ecological anthropology. The editors of and contributors share the understanding that catastrophic events challenge society to rework a specific methodology, and to activate a specific resource, to adapt to and cope with crises ecologically, socially and ideologically. The main aim of this volume is to reveal the important role of studying and taking into account the cultural stereotypes in this process. Through detailed analysis of different case studies, the contributors further generalize the definition of disasters and critical situations as situations that arise from the violation of a balance in individual and collective life, as any deviation from normality in the particular context of each discreet culture. This interpretation informs a structural grouping of the materials in this collection into three main parts. The section on Cultural Responses to Natural and Biological Disasters (specific case studies) follows the Conceptualization of Cultural Knowledge about Disasters The contributors to the collection share the conviction that the ecology of social crises (presented in the volume by the third section on Cultural Management of Social Crises) is a valuable and necessary addition to the field of natural and technological, bio-and man-made disasters. They believe this is proved by the texts presented in this volume. The empirical data employed in the volume, respectively the forms of disasters researched include materials from the Tibetan Pastoral area and the Pamir Plateau in Asia, from the Rhodopes and Strandja Mountains on the Balkans, from Macedonia and Central and Western Bulgaria, ethnic minority areas in Central and Western China, and from Ukraine and Moldova.

Hurricane Katrina brought to light many questions about Americans' preparedness for handling large-scale disasters: Is FEMA effective? Examining these issues from different perspectives, Disaster Relief offers students the tools to form their own opinions by bringing recent events into balanced focus.
