Scattered in a crescent in the sparkling waters of the Aegean, the islands of the Sporades are known to Greek fishermen as 'the gates of the wind'. It was to this unspoilt archipelago that Michael Carroll sailed Astarte, a boat of sleek mahogany with wine-red sails, named after the Phoenician goddess of the moon and the sea. But his dream of travelling where the wind took him, rootless and free, changed when he landed on Skopelos. There, a chance meeting with the charismatic Vangeli led to him buying a piece of land on a remote cove, once the site of an ancient city and the perfect harbour for Astarte.

An Invitation to Ethnomethodology Language, Society and Interaction
Free Download An Invitation to Ethnomethodology: Language, Society and Interaction By David Francis, Stephen Hester
2004 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 0761966420 | PDF | 4 MB
This book offers a new and rigorous approach to observational sociology that is grounded in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. Throughout the authors encourage the reader to explore the social world at first hand, beginning with the immediate family context and then moving out into the public realm and organizational life. Examples of observational analysis are given with reference to topic areas such as family life, education, medicine, crime and deviance, and the reader is shown how to conduct their own inquiries, using methods and materials that are readily and ordinarily available. Drawing on both original material and published studies, Francis and Hester demonstrate how observational sociology can be carried out with an attention to detail typically overlooked by more traditional ethonographic approaches.

Jennifer Trusted examines the nature of philosophy as a subject for study and suggests that it has practical use as well as intellectual appeal since it is concerned with developing our understanding through critical appraisal of the concepts we use, so making our problems clear. Dr Trusted also looks at the approach of some of the leading philosophers of the western world to the philosophy of knowledge. The views of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume and Kant are considered. There are two chapters principally concerned with the views of the twentieth-century philosophers: A.J. Ayer and Norman Malcolm. The concluding chapter summarises the various approaches and the way they contribute to clarifying our ideas.

An Introduction to Manifolds
Free Download Loring W. Tu, "An Introduction to Manifolds"
English | 2010 | pages: 427 | ISBN: 1441973990 | PDF | 4,0 mb
Manifolds, the higher-dimensional analogs of smooth curves and surfaces, are fundamental objects in modern mathematics. Combining aspects of algebra, topology, and analysis, manifolds have also been applied to classical mechanics, general relativity, and quantum field theory. In this streamlined introduction to the subject, the theory of manifolds is presented with the aim of helping the reader achieve a rapid mastery of the essential topics. By the end of the book the reader should be able to compute, at least for simple spaces, one of the most basic topological invariants of a manifold, its de Rham cohomology. Along the way, the reader acquires the knowledge and skills necessary for further study of geometry and topology. The requisite point-set topology is included in an appendix of twenty pages; other appendices review facts from real analysis and linear algebra. Hints and solutions are provided to many of the exercises and problems. This work may be used as the text for a one-semester graduate or advanced undergraduate course, as well as by students engaged in self-study. Requiring only minimal undergraduate prerequisites, 'Introduction to Manifolds' is also an excellent foundation for Springer's GTM 82, 'Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology'.
