Amalasuintha The Transformation of Queenship in the Post–Roman World
Free Download Massimiliano Vitiello, "Amalasuintha: The Transformation of Queenship in the Post-Roman World"
English | 2017 | pages: 312 | ISBN: 081224947X | PDF | 2,7 mb
In this book, Massimiliano Vitiello situates the life and career of the Ostrogothic queen Amalasuintha (c. 494/5-535), daughter of Theoderic the Great, in the context of the transitional time, after the fall of Rome, during which new dynastic regimes were experimenting with various forms of political legitimation. A member of the Gothic elite raised in the Romanized palace of Ravenna, Amalasuintha married her father's chosen successor and was set to become a traditional Gothic queen-a helpmate and advisor to her husband, the Visigothic prince Eutharic-with no formal political role of her own. But her early widowhood and the subsequent death of her father threw her into a position unprecedented in the Gothic world: a regent mother who assumed control of the government.

Althusser and His Contemporaries Philosophy's Perpetual War
Free Download Warren Montag, "Althusser and His Contemporaries: Philosophy's Perpetual War "
English | ISBN: 0822354004 | 2013 | 256 pages | AZW3 | 436 KB
Althusser and His Contemporaries alters and expands understanding of Louis Althusser and French philosophy of the 1960s and 1970s. Thousands of pages of previously unpublished work from different periods of Althusser's career have been made available in French since his death in 1990. Based on meticulous study of the philosopher's posthumous publications, as well as his unpublished manuscripts, lecture notes, letters, and marginalia, Warren Montag provides a thoroughgoing reevaluation of Althusser's philosophical project. Montag shows that the theorist was intensely engaged with the work of his contemporaries, particularly Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze, and Lacan. Examining Althusser's philosophy as a series of encounters with his peers' thought, Montag contends that Althusser's major philosophical confrontations revolved around three themes: structure, subject, and beginnings and endings. Reading Althusser reading his contemporaries, Montag sheds new light on structuralism, poststructuralism, and the extraordinary moment of French thought in the 1960s and 1970s.

Alphonse de Châteaubriant Catholic Collaborator (Modern French Identities)
Free Download Kay Chadwick, "Alphonse de Châteaubriant: Catholic Collaborator (Modern French Identities)"
English | 2002 | pages: 333 | ISBN: 3906766942, 0820456101 | PDF | 1,3 mb
The Second World War spawned infamous collaborators such as Brasillach and Drieu la Rochelle, men who betrayed France throughout the Occupation. Among their number stands the Catholic writer Alphonse de Châteaubriant. Author of the prize-winning novels Monsieur des Lourdines and La Brière, he turned his literary talents to the propagation of a collaborationist message in the pages of the infamous essay La Gerbe des forces and the equally ignominious newspaper La Gerbe. Although nothing predisposes a Catholic to be a collaborator, Châteaubriant's commitment to the National-Socialist cause arose from an idiosyncratic reading of Christian doctrine which justified racism and elitism in the name of spiritual regeneration. He viewed his encounter with National Socialism as a long-awaited meeting of minds, and championed its representatives as men of vision who would re-evangelise the world. After the war, Châteaubriant fled to Austria. Condemned as a traitor in his absence, he indulged in an attempt at self-revision and fulminated against his judges until his dying day. This book explores the dangerous pathways down which misplaced idealism can lead. It challenges those who would obscure the proper telling of Châteaubriant's involvement, or obstruct a fitting narrative of the Vichy years.

Alone in the Mainstream A Deaf Woman Remembers Public School
Free Download Gina A. Oliva, "Alone in the Mainstream: A Deaf Woman Remembers Public School "
English | ISBN: 1563683008 | 2004 | 224 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
When Gina Oliva first went to school in 1955, she didn't know that she was "different." If the kindergarten teacher played a tune on the piano to signal the next exercise, Oliva didn't react because she couldn't hear the music. So began her journey as a "solitary," her term for being the only deaf child in the entire school. Gina felt alone because she couldn't communicate easily with her classmates, but also because none of them had a hearing loss like hers. It wasn't until years later at Gallaudet University that she discovered that she wasn't alone and that her experience was common among mainstreamed deaf students. Alone in the Mainstream recounts Oliva's story, as well as those of many other solitaries.
