The Limits of Scientific Reason Habermas, Foucault, and Science as a Social Institution
Free Download John McIntyre University of Sydney, "The Limits of Scientific Reason: Habermas, Foucault, and Science as a Social Institution "
English | ISBN: 1538157780 | 2021 | 300 pages | EPUB | 616 KB
Critically and comprehensively examining the works of Habermas and Foucault, two giants of 20th century continental philosophy, this book illuminates the effects of scientific reason as it migrates from its specialized institutions into society. It explores how science permeates shared human consciousness, to produce effects that ripple through the entire social body to restructure relations between persons, discourses, institutions, and power in ways which we are barely conscious of. The book shows how science, through its entwinement with power, discourses, and practices, presents certain social arrangements as natural and certain courses of action as beyond question. By arguing for a non-reductive, liberal scientific naturalism that sees science as one form of rationality amongst others, it opens possibilities for thought and action beyond scientific knowledge.

The Life of a Hunter (Kuhl House Poets)
Free Download Michelle Robinson, "The Life of a Hunter (Kuhl House Poets)"
English | 2005 | pages: 91 | ISBN: 0877459525 | PDF | 0,2 mb
Part detective novel, part cinematic saga, part street-smart narrative, the poems in The Life of a Hunter form a document of expedition that couples individual discovery with communal transformation. Michelle Robinson's characters are consigned to particular mechanisms of survival to various forms of physical and psychological evolutions-as a reaction to their search for an acceptable spiritual condition. The multiple identities of her pressured characters are susceptible to physical transformations that provide "a brief jolt of anesthesia, / instead of the cold tenderness of interruption." Robinson uses the culture of film and fiction as an analogy for the world just out of reach and the world already at hand; preoccupied with what precision "sounds like," the figures in her poems respond to the possibility of future change as well as the fact that change is a constant in their lives. "Don't misunderstand. It was the most cynical year of our era / and anything would have been better than to have been asked / to find something beautiful." Robinson's is a strong young voice, detached and observant yet disturbingly present.

The Liberation of Jerusalem
Free Download Max Wickert, Mark Davie, "The Liberation of Jerusalem"
English | 2009 | pages: 454 | ISBN: 0199535353 | EPUB | 2,2 mb
In The Liberation of Jerusalem (1581), Torquato Tasso set out to write an epic to rival the Iliad and the Aeneid. Unlike his predecessors, he took his subject not from myth but from history: the Christian capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. The siege of the city is played out alongside a magical romance of love and sacrifice, in which the Christian knight Rinaldo succumbs to the charms of the pagan sorceress Armida, and the warrior maiden Clorinda inspires a fatal passion in the Christian Tancred. Tasso's masterpiece left its mark on writers from Spenser and Milton to Goethe and Byron, and inspired countless painters and composers. This is the first English translation in modern times that faithfully reflects both the sense and the verse form of the original. Max Wickert's fine rendering is introduced by Mark Davie, who places Tasso's poem in it troubled historical context and sheds light on its narrative framework and historical accuracy as well as its reception and influence.

The Legend of Green Snake and White Snake
Free Download Adam Tervort, "The Legend of Green Snake and White Snake"
English | 2011 | pages: 86 | ISBN: 1466361913 | EPUB | 0,2 mb
As far as demons go, Miss White and Miss Green were pretty good. They tried their best to do good deeds and consume as few humans as possible. It was hard work, being a nice demon, but they both really tried. Epic battles and romance await in this irreverent novella retelling of the classic Chinese story, part of The Zodiac Schmodiac Story Cycle, 1st Course: Kung Pao Flavored Short Stories. This novella is part of the Zodiac Schmodiac story cycle, a group of short stories based on the Chinese Zodiac. Remember the paper placemats with zodiac animals from your favorite Chinese buffet? The things it tells you are wildly inaccurate and probably have no resemblance whatsoever to your life or situation, but reading them is fun and writing these stories was too. (This story, of course, is the snake in the Zodiac cycle.) Ever since I began living in Asia I have loved traditional festivals and the stories that go along with them. One of the most interesting is told at the Duanwu (Dragonboat) Festival. Ask 10 Chinese people for the story of "The Legend of White Snake" and you'll get 10 or more different versions, all of them wonderful and strange in their own way. Although getting a definitive version isn't easy, the basic story is easy to grasp. There are two demons, White Snake and Green Snake (who can both turn into human form), a man named Xu Xian who is beguiled by them, and a monk named Fahai who tries to save Xu Xian from the demons. There is usually a tower involved. Green Snake tries to save White Snake from Fahai. Fahai may or may not be successful in saving Xu Xian from the demons. Xu Xian may or may not want to be saved. It is either a love story or a tragedy, it depends on the version you get. When I began writing this story I wanted it to take a different tack-wacky from the start. I didn't intend to write a novella, this was only supposed to be a short story, but once I got into I couldn't stop. If you have ever read the original story you may be disappointed by some of the things you see here. When my wife heard that there were jackalopes she didn't think it was very funny or very Chinesey. (But there are and it is funny, at least to me.) When my mom read it she rolled her eyes at all of the wine that Fahai consumes. Could I make the poor monk into any shallower of a person? After all, Jet Li is playing Fahai's part in the new movie being made in China. Couldn't he have been a bit more noble? I guess not, because this Fahai jumped of the page in this form from the very start. My wife also thought that all of the 'faht' jokes weren't very funny, and they didn't even make sense in Chinese. (Jokes about Fahai's name. She's right, they don't make any sense in Chinese.) Luckily for me this book is in English, and I hope you'll get the spirit of the 'fahtiness' as it was intended: wackiness. There are few deep moral lessons in here, just lots of vaguely Chinese jokes, but I hope you'll enjoy it.

The skills needed in today's business world are not the same as they were in the past. Therefore, upskilling, reskilling and developing staff has never been more important. However, classroom training isn't the best way to achieve this with employees forgetting more than 70% of what they've been taught within just one day. Learning outside the workplace is social, digital and immediate and companies need to embrace this to achieve the productivity, performance and revenue benefits that come from effective learning.
