Don't Tell My Mother How to Fight War on Your Own Terms
Free Download Peter Duggan-Smith, Raymond Eagle, "Don't Tell My Mother: How to Fight War on Your Own Terms"
English | 2000 | ISBN: 0919614752 | EPUB | pages: 313 | 2.5 mb
Peter Duggan-Smith was born in 1916 to an actress mother. As she was always on the move he was brought up by two maiden aunts until he was accepted to train for a sea-going career on the cadet ship H.M.S. Conway. It was on the last of several voyages to New Zealand as a Merchant Navy apprentice that his life of adventure began ― though it did not always turn out as he had planned! The one constant in Peter's life was his love of flying; by the end of his final flight in Cambodia in 1974, he had racked up more than 17,000 flying hours-in no less than 70 types of piston-engine aircraft. Peter was small in stature, but a giant among adventurers, with a rare ability to take the reader along with him through his many escapades.

Featuring telling performances by Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland as the couple whose daughter has tragically died, Don't Look Now depicts the way in which the macabre and the everyday are intertwined.

Don't Go Near The Water British Petroleum and Alaska Worker's Compensation Division Practices Exposed
Free Download Mervyn Eggleston, "Don't Go Near The Water: British Petroleum and Alaska Worker's Compensation Division Practices Exposed"
English | 2010 | ISBN: 1594331332 | EPUB | pages: 142 | 0.6 mb
At British Petroleum's power plant on the oil-field at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, a worker experienced nearly a decade of health issues. Repair of a contamination source in the drinking water system, with its sudden resolution of some of the symptoms, both revealed the problem and presented an unexpected situation. Management reacted and a man 55 years old lost his job and career as the situation was buried. Actions of some professionals and the state's people simply seemed to be one-sidedly, goal oriented-and all a disaster for the victim. Medical input concerned cancer and there has been, as feared, an exceptional amount of cancer among the plant's crew-members. Several of them have already died. This book is an effort to tell the story in an attempt to get the remaining crew members monitored for their protection. Be prepared to encounter some unexpected and possibly troubling things. "What happened with the potable water system at CPS was a blunder; pure and simple. What happened after that was not even close to right.'

Domesticating the Airwaves Broadcasting, Domesticity and Femininity
Free Download Maggie Andrews, "Domesticating the Airwaves: Broadcasting, Domesticity and Femininity"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1441105719, 1441172726 | EPUB | pages: 288 | 2.0 mb
Using case studies and analytical overviews this book explores the relationship between broadcasting and the intimate domestic sphere into which it is broadcast. It focuses on the period from the 1920s, when broadcasting was established in the UK, to the present day when both domesticity and broadcasting have become areas of anxiety and contestation. The entry of the 'wireless', and later television, into the home changed men and women's experience of domesticity, offering education and reducing isolation. But broadcasting did not merely change domestic leisure patterns, it actively intervened in constructing domesticity. The supposedly natural relationship between femininity and domesticity has structured the nature of broadcasting, and also the discourses which have emerged concerning the consumption of broadcast media. Contemporary broadcasting continues to be obsessed by domesticity, both in an idealised sense as well as portraying the domestic world as one of turmoil and crisis. This volume demonstrates that the relationship between broadcasting and domesticity is a key, and often neglected, feature of the cultural history of Britain in the last 100 years.

In this carefully crafted work, Jeffrey Young illuminates southern slaveholders' strange and tragic path toward a defiantly sectional mentality. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence and integrating political, religious, economic, and literary sources, he chronicles the growth of a slaveowning culture that cast the southern planter in the role of benevolent Christian steward-even as slaveholders were brutally exploiting their slaves for maximum fiscal gain.

Domestic and International Perspectives on Kyrgyzstan's 'Tulip Revolution' Motives, Mobilization and Meanings
Free Download Sally Cummings, "Domestic and International Perspectives on Kyrgyzstan's 'Tulip Revolution': Motives, Mobilization and Meanings"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 0415491908, 0415847125 | EPUB | pages: 160 | 1.1 mb
In early 2005 regional protests in Kyrgyzstan soon became national ones as protesters seized control of the country's capital, Bishkek. The country's president for fifteen years, Askar Akaev, fled the country and after a night of extensive looting, a new president, Kurmanbek Bakiev, came to power. The events quickly earned the epithet 'Tulip Revolution' and were interpreted as the third of the colour revolutions in the post-Soviet space, following Ukraine and Georgia. But did the events in Kyrgyzstan amount to a 'revolution'? How much change followed and with what academic and policy implications? This innovative, unique study of these events brings together a new generation of Kyrgyz scholars together with established international observers to assess what happened in Kyrgyzstan and after, and the wider implications.
